Well, thank you very much for your positive feedback. I appreciate you taking your time to watch my video. What would you suggest to seal this if i wanted to integrate this into a fountain for my mailbox. What would make it hold water at the bottom without it leaking/absorbing
@fauxrock
@fauxrock 9 ай бұрын
There are a lot of ways to create water tight characteristics. I generally use a Hydro seal coupled with 100% acrylic sealer‘s. Both are available on the market by several manufactures.

I've watched many of your videos, so apologies if I've missed it. I'm sure you have a video explaining what your mud consists of, although I think there was some confusion over the fibres used? I'm assuming it's just regular chopped (fibreglass) fibres? As for the paint you use, is it just regular latex paint, and for inside or outside use? I'm further assuming the colour is locked in when you use sealer, and to that end regular concrete sealer? This is the part I'm wondering about most - what type of climate do you have there? I'm not aware of your location, but the green environment suggests to me you are somewhere that can be quite wet at times and probably very cold during winter? Do you have any issues with the paint you use? Thanks in advance.

I use a lot of different formulation throughout the videos that you’ve watched most the time I’m using just regular mortar mix from Lowe’s or Home Depot because that’s what most of the viewers from KZbin are going to be able to get hold of. I do use stronger mixes that I have formulated proprietarily that I only offer to people who go through one of my different training courses. It’s always best that you use 100% acrylic paints not the latex because the sealer can burn it very easily. You were right thinking that once you put the sealer on you like the colors in and you lock out any other thing being able to further stain the rock a different color. Thanks for watching my videos. I do appreciate it.

As far as Weather goes, I have had rocks that we made for years in the south west very hot temperatures very dry. I’ve also been in the north east, and the north west where we have moisture and freeze thaw issues to deal with but all of the formulations with the processes you’ve seen on, KZbin are working fine without issue again I started making rock features back in 74 and then in 89. I started doing artificial rock, so this isn’t something I just started yesterday it’s tried, true and tested. Thanks again.

@@fauxrock Thanks for your reply and information. We have ready mixed cement/concrete here, but I always prefer to mix my own to achieve the desired consistency. It's interesting to learn that you use acrylics, rather than latex. Over here, we call it emulsion paint, but from many videos I've watched over the years, I know your latex is our emulsion. I have made a few faux rocks in recent years, and have used a stamping method with silicone texture mats (mainly volcanic moulds I took in the Canary Islands), plus black release powder so as to avoid the concrete sticking to the mats, and to leave a dark residue to highlight the texture. I have also made a couple of 5ft Easter Island heads, and aim to make some Egyptian type items - no idea what yet! I have sealed them with waterproofing liquid and, like you, have not had any problems from freeze/thaw. We have freeze/thaw here too, but maybe not on the same scale as in your northern states. We may have below freezing temps for 7-14 days each winter, but most of the time our winter temps are around 5-10 degrees (centigrade - 40-50 Fahrenheit), with highs of mid 30s (again, centigrade - mid 90s Fahrenheit), although most years we get late 30s for a few weeks, but average summer temps are around mid 20s (around 80 Fahrenheit). That is here in the South East of England - up North is cooler and wetter. The big problem with mine is the weight - although I note from some of your videos, yours can be heavy too. I guess it's the nature of construction. Keep the videos coming as I really enjoy them.
