Using any sort of petroleum distillate like Vaseline or mineral oil in fresh water is a terrible idea. First, it’s a pollutant; it kills fish. Second, it will create an oil sheen that fish will see. Third, you can use this stuff on any stream or reservoir that is protected drinking water. The difference between homemade stuff like this and stuff made by a company like Loon is that the company has invested in developing products that don’t harm fish or streams. It’s worth the money to do what’s right. Besides, if you’re found using distillates in protected waters, you face hefty fines and risk seizure of your gear. And, as far as the scenario goes, if you’re out of safe product, use cornstarch as a desiccant. It’s environmentally safe and more effective than polluting and ruining your flies.

now i need to buy vaseline, candles, and baby oil. i'm just wondering how many people have all the ingredients at home? can i use wd40 instead? i have it for sure. when you calculate the cost did you count gas price to go to three different places to save couple bucks?

In some countries (in Russia, for example), fly fishing is not widespread and therefore finding floatant is a problem. I've tried silicone oil for electrical circuits and bearings, but the flies sink quickly and leave a mark. I can order Fly floatant for about 15-20 dollars and wait about 1-1.5 weeks for it. or I can do this. As you can see, everyone's conditions are different. We usually catch fish in other ways using flies.

it's way too expensive here in Malaysia and when u fish a lot it makes no sense to spend so much for a little batch..

A few days ago I was in too big a hurry to make the whole recipe. I coated a big fly, the line that was sinking and the tippet with Vaseline alone. Everything went back to floating high on the water. Maybe the other ingredients will make it better?

loop to loop two elastics together then loop the one end to the d ring on your vest put your fly in the loop that is hanging pull tight and pluck like a guitar string the vibrations will shake the fly dry.

hi, is your basic recipe for the paste or gel and does it mat the hackles together , thanks mike
@superstrike4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The paste is for line and tippet. The gel is JUST OK for dry flies, but not for smaller than #12.
@Im118ish3 жыл бұрын
I imagine if you apply.it lightly enough,& flick a few false casts right after applying is should fix up any hackle matting...probably more dependent on the exact fly pattern really.

Got a question for you: Could you in fact, add a few drops of garlic or shrimp or some other stank oil to this mixture?! I'm sitting here thinking.... might be a good time to sneak some in while it's warm.

Mineral oil and Vaseline are petroleum distilates. They are hydrocarbons, meaning they are comprised of hydrogen and carbon. They are pollutants. Naturally occurring fats found in nuts and plants, like coconut oil, shea butter, etc., are triglycerides. Triglycerides are esters of Coconut oil is primarily composed of triglycerides, which are esters of fatty acids and glycerol. Triglycerides are organic compounds containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, but they are not considered hydrocarbons because they also contain oxygen atoms. Hydrocarbons, on the other hand, consist only of carbon and hydrogen atoms. Triglycerides are necessary for life and fish can ingest them safely.

Does this recipe make trout go away or from the fly with the smell of it or do they come to it as normal
