You talk about lack of leadership and you’re spot on. There is a great example from the weekend about the difference in having leadership or not having leadership - and being mentally tough and not being mentally tough. Mac Andrew punched a second gamer on the chin at half time and both sets of players had a light scuffle. The crowd booed every time he got near the ball. He goes on to kick the first two goals of the second half and then takes a pack mark to give himself the opportunity to kick a winner after the siren, which he converts. That’s mental toughness. There’s a good portion of our side that don’t have mental ability let alone toughness. Good leaders and tough minds wouldn’t have let this happen. We’ve got a great captain but he can’t do it on his own.
@absolutelyessendon2 ай бұрын

100% our issue for a long time has been a lack of ruthlessness - ASADA issue castrated us and we've yet to recover. Other than Merrett, Durham and Caldwell show the level of grit/toughness that we've been lacking which gives a bit of light at the end of the tunnel but our list is full of players that show zero aggression (thank Christ we're finally playing Archie Roberts as well). The start of the season there was an article on SEN talking about how Heppell had "made peace with his pursuit of not winning a flag" - disgraceful that a supposed leader would be interviewing that way on the eve of the season - what message does that send to the rest of the players? Do we think that's the mindset the 93 bombers had leading in to that season with a bunch of teenagers? A great guy and all that but we need ruthless, competitive, focused, mentally tough players that elevate each others standards and make each other walk taller. The absolute nail in the coffin is the discussion of D'Ambrosio who's only just turned 21 being in contention for All Australian in a position that we didn't even play him in - shall we set up another meaningless external review then let "Adrian do what we wants to do"?
@absolutelyessendon2 ай бұрын

For me, it's not how long it's been since we've won a final. It's that we haven't even finished in the top 6 since 2002. It's also desperate times now because history shows that if your period of time being unsuccessful lasts for 2 generations (30 years), it kills your supporter base and kids that would have been bombers end up supporting other teams.

nailed it when you said the senior players on the list just arent at the caliber required to really seal these winnable games. not the greatest example to be led by as a young recruit at any afl team. our only hope is that we hit them where it hurts next year (the clubs wallets) and members start to drop off. maybe thats the incentive they need to actually make real change, once it affects their bottom line, because the last 20 years they havent been in the business of winning football thats for sure

Fair call fella's call it as you see it, that should never be an issue. Disappointing 100%. It's a passion fuelled sport no doubt, nobody enjoys loosing and when things fall wayward the first thing some supporters reach for is anger, resentment and helplessness. Naturally. The common theme has been our inability to convert the opportunities we create through hard work. That's footy isn't it? A rhetorical question; would you prefer we get flogged week in and week out because the old method wasn't giving us instant success? Undoubtedly we have a way to go before we play a brand of footy that stands up in finals. Not making the finals this year isn't the end of the world. We've scraped in to finals before only to get obliterated in the first round. Making finals without earning it, gives the club a false sense of accomplishment I believe.

In each of the 7 losses since Rd 12 against Gold Coast, Essendon won the inside 50 count. Every single one. This is a stat the club really needs to analyse as it tells you so much about the quality (or lack of) on our list. It tells you that we're getting the ball into our forward 50 more than our opposition. Are the forwards not good enough to mark/crumb? Not strong enough? Terrible kicks at goal? For the midfield, it tells you they are winning the ball and getting it inside 50 but what's the delivery like? Are they putting it to the right areas? And finally, it tells you about our defence surprisingly. If the opposition are going inside 50 less than us but outscoring us, then this is a massive problem. Why are other clubs way more efficient? The inside 50 statistic is not some anomaly that has only happened once or twice out of seven. It's happened in all seven of our losses since Rd 12. The most telling games to look at is the Carlton, Geelong and St Kilda ones.

Spot on with everything. Particularly Scott's selections this year. You know who would've been great against Matt Rowell? Maybe the big bodied guy getting 40 touches and 12 tackles in the VFL (Setterfield). Roberts should've been playing 6 rounds ago. Hayes should've debuted against Freo after Ridley went out. And controversially, I'd rather give Jayden Davey a shot over Alwyn, otherwise he's going to be another delisted with no AFL games pretty soon.

1 goal 9 when the game is at stake is not bad luck and not lack of talent it is THE CURSE OF THE GODS! But this is not the only instance. You can look at most of our games and see that 80% of the time, when there is a 50:50 piece of luck, it will go the way of the opposition. For example if Sam Draper taps the ball in a random direction, (which happens a lot), there should be 50% chance that it will land in the hands of one of our boys but NO! 80% of the time it will be in the hands of the opposition. The same goes for random kicks out of the back line or into the forward line and 80% of the time it will fall into the the grateful hands of the opposition. Sure, we should look before we kick, BUT, mathematically we should still have a 50:50 chance in these cases, but we don't. A close friend of mine, who has his nose close to the action, says that it was the Essendon Croquet Club that laid a heavy curse on the EFC when they tried to evict their Windy Hill co-tenant to make room for more facilities. The Croquet Club arced up, laid the curse and it was the EFC who had to move and who have been rubbish ever since. The doping saga was just one manifestation of the awesome power of this curse. There have been a multitude of lesser examples of which our last game was just the latest episode. This curse is ongoing and open-ended. Until it is ended we will never again taste success. It is time for the EFC to take the issue seriously and go and apologise to the Croquet Club and BEG their forgiveness. The entire Board should prostrate themselves before Margaret Campbell and her mates and BEG for them to lift the curse. They should bring the EFC cheque book and let them write in whatever figure they like. Sure, we could hire an African Witch Doctor and supply him with a goat and 3 chickens but that should be the backup plan. The primary plan should be to appease the rightful co-tenants, maybe then we could move back to Windy Hill...

It is skill level, coaching , the non existing game plan. A lack of basic football brains, how often do we allow the opposition to mark unopposed inside their 50, I am old fashioned , but whatever happened to manning up? DT is spot on with the Adrian dud, how he is still there is baffling. Maybe the dud has a book of dirt that allows him to stay there. Maybe we need to finish with a wooden spoon to allow a proper rebuild and weeding out of rubbish.

The players do not fill holes, chase with the intention of catching their opponent, run, spread, make position, pressure or rush down back to help out and they have been playing this way since Heard resigned.

Dodoro still has not given Vozzo control of list management which means this insidious wrecker will be in charge of recruitment next year. I genuinely feel sorry for Brad Scott - imagine sitting in the coaching box and watching a list of players on 6 figures kick 1 goal 9 points. This pampered list still lack any consistent ability to finish teams off. They are soft, play hard footy when they 'want to' - another year, another failure. And I again don't want to single out one player but Peter Wright is not the answer, yes a B+F winner but a player his size should eat most inside 50 deliveries, time to finally stop talking and start culling - Sheedy was ruthless, Scott needs to tell Dodoro get out of the way and let Vozzo do his job or go to the EFC Board and demand Dodoro be removed completely from anything football related as Dodoro just walks around 'The Hanger' like he's teflon coated. If EFC put as much effort into their AFL woke PC virtue signalling BS and 'played' footy only, maybe the culture would change cos 2024 has been yet another wasted year.

This isn't the same Scott we all hated when his lion's mob dethroned us. Working so long at the AFL has made him soft. It doesn’t help that he can’t coach either. The only one that can save us is our very own Dimmer, but he wants nothing to do with our toxic club, and I don't blame him. He has worked within a successful football program and knows what's required from both players and staff.

Sack every single person at EFC, including the social media and catering staff. Peter letter bang on. There's a reason why players leave this club and thrive in at other clubs. Maybe they're all getting distracted by engagements and baby making. BS uses 'it's a tough competion' as an excuse for mediocrity. Not saying it's not tough or tight, but Brisbane can do it year after year, swans playing in 23 of the last 28 finals: Geelong there year after year: port: hawthorn will win a premiership b4 us.... they must be playing in a different comp than us 🤣 And we'll probably beat sydney next week because you know, essendon... You can say what ever. This game was all about Hardwick. Since he was traded to Port Adelaide and than wasn’t given the Essendon coaching, job, Hardwick as had a real stone to grind against the Essendon football Club. You can do all the research as you like, the teams he has coached have only lost once to Essendon. In my opinion that was another sweet vendetta of Hardwick against the Bombers.

The management of the list after the 2000 premiership was absolutely shocking. Every dynastic premiership team that has won since has bent over backwards to keep their players together. Really, really hate being right on this occasion, but when we were 8-2-1 I said that we would be 9-4-1 just after the bye, & then proceed to play Essington footy for the rest of the year & basically repeat what we did last year. And also, a couple of weeks ago, predicted that we would hand GC their 1st win in Melbourne for 2 years or whatever it is. For the average supporter like myself to even think we could crumble like this so often (let alone this stuff eventuates every time right before our eyes), means there is something horribly wrong with our beloved football club. The worst part of it all is, those entrusted with the honour to run our football club, still do not believe that there is anything wrong.

You’ve said it perfectly. It’s the horrible predictability of our collapse that’s so damning!

I think a big part of the issue with us is we flirt with our form. We go into games like against Richmond, Norf, West Coast etc & cruise, play maybe 1 good quarter, maybe get the win, & that psyche permeates thru the team & cannot be reversed. The slide usually happens after playing 1 of those bottom out of form teams
