I realize you may have been taken on a 'sanitized tourist' tour but it seems like the area is kept very clean. I've known people who have gone to Haiti and it's amazing that the two countries share the same island. Haiti is almost like a failed nation while the Dominican Republic embraces outside investment (tourism, of course).

Was it expensive to hire a taxi there? How many people fit it the bus?

It was $10 a person which we thought was reasonable.
