My first video of yours. New subscriber. I love the simplicity of this bench. I don't use a mask for sanding. I use a shop vacuum with a Dustopper and I use the Diablo Sandnet discs. Maybe not so neighbor-friendly at 5:00am (which I never do) but very little dust. You've got so much more dust in your shop that solving the sanding problem just scratches the surface. A gentle breeze will keep dust in the air just from what is lying around. If a mask is your only solution, I'd be wearing it every second I was in your shop, not just for sanding. Solve your dust collection issue and a mask becomes secondary. Now, I know that dust collection is way beyond a beginner's pay grade, but even a beginner should start somewhere. Cleaning up regularly is a good place to start. Always a good tip for a beginner.

A couple recommendations for your shop: Miter saw station: It worries me how unsafe your setup is, both for you and the wood (i.e., You have Jedi reflexes at catching pieces as you cut them, but Jedi are infamous for losing limbs). I know you think you don't have room, but hear me out bc a miter saw station can be more than just a single-purpose tool. I built mine as a workbench where the middle section is an adjustable shelf. Nothing fancy about it. The shelf sits on some 1x4 pieces that are held onto the legs by 1/4" bolts that I tighten down with those big woodworking knobs,. There are holes in the legs every couple inches so I can move the 1x4 blocks and set the shelf as high/low as I like. The 1x4 pieces have furniture levelers on them (but pointed upward) to fine-tune the height of the shelf. The fact that the shelf has a large vertical range means I can drop other tools into it. The space is only 24" wide, but that will fit the router table, my bandsaw (which is smaller; I realize yours is free-standing), or a lot else (e.g., I built a nichrome wire setup for cutting styrofoam sheets, and it snaps into the table very nicely! Attach a clamp edge, and you can get precise dimensions to use as insulation). I also have a top for the middle section, so it just becomes a solid workbench when I don't have a tool in it. The whole thing is on casters and is the same height as the table saw, so it can be rolled around to serve as an outfeed table. Positioning squares: I finally invested in a set of these after a simple project I did free-hand came out crooked. Now I'm not sure how I lived without them! Once you have a tool, you find uses for it/them that you'd never think of. For example, my positioning squares are aluminum, and that's a better heat conductor than steel (i.e., 205 W/m K vs. 50.2 W/m K), so they stay in my kitchen when I'm not making, say, birdhouses or whatever calls for right angles. I use them to thaw the salmon I forgot to put in the first last night or to cool off the leftovers before they go in the fridge. Also, get the kids involved around the shop. Give them age-appropriate things to do, and they'll improve along the way because they'll come up knowing where things are, what the tools and materials are called, etc. A good starting point is just unscrewing hardware in reclaimed materials or starting screws before you follow up with power tools (e.g., have them start the pocket hole screws). I get mine involved with lots of "inbetween" tasks like sorting materials, putting tools away, and generally cleaning up the small stuff. Pretty soon they're recommending alternate ways to tackle a problem bc they saw something on KZbin you didn't have time to look up. (True story. Happens to me several times a week right now until summer vacation ends.)

I love the miter saw station idea. I used to have a stand for it but I sold it and I was planning on putting foldable wings on both sides of my cart I have now. Just haven’t gotten around to it. I’ll check out those squares! And the kids are in the shop working with me all the time. I love it so much. I agree, get them involved young. That’s what my dad did for me too. Thanks for the recommendations!

Nice simple build! I'd suggest drilling a hole at the apex of your v-cut on the legs. That'll prevent any potential splitting of the legs in the future, just in case.

@asbrand So, you would drill a hole at the top of the apex on the side of the board or into the apex? If on the side would you go through all the way and fill with a dowel, plug, etc.?

@@stateofbasketball8650 - Drill a hole all the way through at the apex...where the two cuts of the V come together. This helps prevent the board splitting in the future. I suppose you could fill it with a dowel. I'd just leave the hole. Doesn't have to be a huge one.

When you gotta move stuff off the table saw so you can use the table saw, no fancy dust collection on the Kreg that keeps moving around while you try to drill the holes. I gotta say though…my ocd kicked in when I saw you without a mask. Anything is better than nothing. They got some at HF that don’t break the bank. Thank you for posting and keeping it real. Subbed.

I always use a P-100 mask, and have worn prescription glasses for decades. Here's the trick for any mask not fogging: Don't tuck the bottom of the glasses up BEHIND the upper edge of the mask, up where they'll be very close to your eyes. You want the glasses to drop down closer to the tip of your nose, RIDING OUT ON TOP of the face of that mask instead, not tucked behind the mask rim near your eyes and fog, so pull those glasses out a little bit toward the end of your nose, farther away from your eyes juuuust a tad bit and let them sit out forward some. No fogging. Great content as usual! 👍

Just subscribed. Love the simplicity of the project. And not having a dust mask is the least of your problems. I often sand without a dust mask for the same reason (fogging up of glasses). I'd be much more worried about not having a riving knife in your table saw. Kickback can be a b****.

There’s a mask I’ve found that I use for everything and it doesn’t fog up my glasses at all. That’s the Miller ML00895 “ half-mask “ made by Miller the welder company. It’s not crazy expensive, has replaceable filter elements, you can get different filtration value elements, besides having adjustable stretchy straps, they come in different sizes to fit your face better and more comfortably. I use it for woodwork, mowing the yard if the John Deere is kicking up a lot of dust, metal work and welding as it fits inside my Miller digital infinity welding hood, and when Covid first started I got the highest filtration value elements and wore it to work if I had to go out in the field for any on-site work, they were so impressed by it they bought a few hundred of them for the Doctors and Nurses( I do IT work for a medical group and was in and out of Dr’s offices ). It and the elements are fairly easy to find, but it’s so much smaller than the standard type. I can’t recommend it enough.

Hahaha! Ok, go to Home Depot and buy a 6 ft 1x12. A 6 ft 1x10. And an 8ft 1x4. While you’re there, grab a handsaw and a drill. Or you can keep making excuses 🤷♂️ we all start somewhere. Good luck

Nothing here you couldn't do with hand saw, drill, and screwdriver. You don't need to burn it, but even that could be done with a $10 tourch. Of course you already know all of that, but you prefer to spend your time being a troll and making excuses rather than actually building something.

@@jeffp5991 A beginner would have a daunting task. Wouldn't be able to do this in an hour. And not with handtools. I did the 2 carpentry class and the joinery class that came after. So yeah. I stand by my "not a 1 hour job, for a beginner, with hand tools" claim. The 1 hour claim is bogus anyway. Half the video is filmed during evening hours. The burning was done during the day. I'm not trolling or exaggerating.

Damn..look at that view count! I was out at the Black Hat /DEF CON conferences and missed the post day. Hang on - did you meet santa at the mall...this week? I'd be unsure as well. Great video as always. Looking like algorithm is taking you to the promised land hahahahhaha

Watching how close you push with your hand relative to the table saw blade makes me cringe inside. I was doing the same and the board started rising so, instinctively I pushed it down with my thumb. Quick reminder: metal blade beats thumb every time.
@DieTrying13Ай бұрын
The camera is deceiving. I’ve also stuck my finger into the blade before. Almost lost down to the first knuckle but I just missed the bone.

Facebook marketplace isn't the place to sell woodworking projects. Don't waste your time people.
@DieTrying133 ай бұрын
Or you can try it and see how it goes. I do great on there with some projects. I also have gotten a bunch of custom jobs from posting on there
@micheleromaine77823 ай бұрын
Yeah, you’re right about that. I used to do OK selling my projects on there but not anymore. Do you have any suggestions on which platform is the best?
@DieTrying133 ай бұрын
I actually do better posting on my own Facebook page. When I post something for sale on marketplace, I also post on my own and 90% of the time the sale comes from my own. Would love to know some other spots

What kind of paste wax do you use? Or were you one of the lucky guys that had a case sitting around before J&J caved to government pressure?
@DieTrying133 ай бұрын
I’m actually just using minwax but I think the fact that I had just burned the benches and they were still warm really helped it absorb into the wood.

You need to get any mask to protect your lungs in 10-20 years you will thank yourself. Another suggestion is put a thick towel over the end of wood that is close to your windshield. It will help protect your windsheild if you have to stop short.
