1-hour Evolution of an Artificial Life Ecosystem v0.3

The creatures (called bibites) initially spawn with an empty brain and a basic genetic code, but have a random chance of getting mutations, that will change their traits and/or behaviors, that they can then pass to their offspring.
Those mutations can range from a slight change in size to new connections being added to their brain (thus changing their behavior).
The more they eat, the more eggs they can lay, propagating their genes.
Their brains are inspired by the rtNEAT method, so, except from their senses (input neurons) and their possible actions (output neurons), every component of their brain are evolved (like developing a connection between seeing food and going forward) and selected through natural selection.
I have bigger plans for this project now that We're all in quarantine I might actually do it !

too make it easier I recommend that the creature grow different according to their speed,sensing etc. (e.g organs such as legs if they are faster and with energy penalties). This will result in more realistic evolution and the different species become more notable.

I have some suggestions, if i get anything wrong and its already there or being worked on then feel free to correct me. 1. I know that there WILL be a biomes system but i think it shoule be logical, with the world being divided into cold areas with cold biomes and hot areas with hot biomes, id suggest dividing these into large strips, heres my suggestions for temperatures, in in cold places, plants grow less frequently and creatures move slower the colder it gets, but meat takes longer to spoil, and in hotter tempuratures, meat spoils quicker, plants also grow less frequently but not as little as in colder tempuratures, all creatures also use more energy than in other areas. Maybe make an extra part to bibites that causes temperature adaption, where if they adapt to tempuratures in cold they dont move slower and maybe even faster, but the effects in hot areas is even more than usual, and maybe take damage if it gets too hot for a cold creature and vice versa, thats my suggestions for teperature biomes. And thats honestly all i can think of at the moment so ill edit this comment if i get any new ideas, also this should be more viewed, maybe make a wiki for it? It would be nice to have a place to see what means what, now have a nice day!

Thanks a lot for the comment ! Yeah the idea would be to have a field representing temperature, humidity, etc. And biomes to arise naturally from the effect those values have on plants and bibites. So absolutely, we have similar ideas of where this should go :)

Hello! I come from #Alife2020 :-) This is a great video to leave on the background and relax. Here is a suggestion -- maybe add a camera option where the camera slowly moves towards the region with the largest number of bibites if the screen becomes too empty? In some parts of the video I'd see several bibites run out of the edge of the screen, never to be seen again. Unless of course the edge of the screen is the end of the world and all bibites moving there are condemned to eternal damnation too terrible to behold (back to the object pool with you!).

Great advice! Thanks ! it would be fare more interesting than a screen that gets empty ! Another option would be to have the camera a little more focused (closer view) and always go toward the closest bibite 🤔

ive been playing with Allegro 5 and c++ and trying to make some artificial life. how can i make them turn smoothly? mine always run in circles... i think they need a middle value so they dont turn at all. idk

pretty cool video, but I have some questions: There is a specific mutation that change the color? for example, a bibit which is more blue is faster or smarter to reach food? a red one is a carnivorous? They will only go straight ahead or smoothly turn left/right or they will also show a real "brain" changing direction to reach the near food?

Yeah, their color is genetic and can mutate through time. Colors don't have any direct effects aside from their appearance. But they do have the capacity to see other's colors, so some genetic pressure may come from there. They can evolve pretty much any behavior from their sent of senses and outputs (actions) so as they're able to see the food, they often evolve to go toward it.

We can even see for example at 9:28 a purple bibit going towards a purple egg then after the eclosion, the big bibit stops and wait for the baby to go out of the way ! That's incredible :o

Is the world larger than what we can see on the screen? The bibittes keep leaving the area and we don’t see them again for a while. Is the world toroidal?

The world is not toroïdal but it is far larger, but any more zoomed out and you wouldn't see much. (thanks for being a subs for so long btw)
