I am English. I once had to listen to a heated lecture, out of nowhere, about what the British did to the Irish, from an American. I was 'over there', with family (American side) so, I just agreed and took the flak, in order to placate, like the English do (except for when the dogs of war are released). I can't remember at which point in his lecture I became irritated, but I remember asking him "So, what is your Irish ancestry?". One of his great grandfathers was Irish... That was it. When I told him that five of my great grandparents were Irish, two of them were Scots and only one of them was English and that I already knew British and Irish history, he could not compute. Furthermore, the fact that the people in this 'Irish-American' house - my family members - were less 'Irish' than me, left him stunned. He was lucky that he didn't give the same lecture to one of my brothers. On hearing about said lecture, he said... "I would have clocked him!" - the Irish force is strong in this one. Although, I think his anger was more about his 'little sister' (I was a grown woman of 28) being made to feel uncomfortable, as opposed to the legitimacy of the historical content of the lecture. The American chap would not have felt as confident about lecturing a 6ft 3" brick sh!th0use of a bloke, as he was about lecturing a 5ft 6" woman. That's all I'm saying. Slán!

Here in the USofA I might upon introduction ask someone, "What are you?". It seems to me think this must sound strange overseas. But here it means, "From where did your family members emigrate from to the US? As a nation built upon immigration this is part of American culture. To be sure nationality can be quite important to the actual immigrants. Haitians are eating our pets! But for subsequent generations it is sort of like having a favorite sports club.
@graceygrumble
@graceygrumble 28 күн бұрын
@@kurtwicklund8901 It’s strange, really. We (Europeans) have history coming out of our 4rses, but ’family history’ is only thought of in terms of ’which poor sod died where, in a war?’. We all have roots from all over the place, but after one or two generations, we become ’where we are born’. Just ask my English/Latvian sister-in-law. The same is true for the Kiwis and Ozzies. I had a hilarious exchange with a Kiwi last winter/their summer, who was telling me how the British f’ed up the natural order of the ecosystem with invasive species... My reply: "You’re the British you're angry about, mate. I’m the British who stayed at home. I only rocked up the week before last!". That idea had never occurred to him. The only thing the children of the European diaspora will hold onto is a football team. Their grandparents supported - Atromitos, Bologna, Red Star Belgrade, Newcastle United (a wise choice)etc. which is slightly bizarre, but we get that. There is an ’affiliation’ status. You will be most welcome. You rock up in Lisbon wearing your granda’s Benfica shirt, when they are playing Sporting Lisbon, in Lisbon and you will ’belong’ to half of Lisbon, at that match. But, you will still be ’The American’ with a Portuguese granda.

Fahrenheit is described as “0F is cold and 100F is hot” which seems simple until you realise that hot and cold are completely subjective so realistically the scale only works completely for the guy who invented it. Celsius is based off water’s behaviour at sea level: 0C Is the freezing point and 100C is the boiling point which doesn’t really mean much to humans except for the fact that it’s an objective scale based off of something tangible that normal people can test and replicate, people in Siberia don’t see 0F as particularly cold but everyone can universally agree that water freezes at 0C.

One reason US vehicles can be that big is that with a standard DL, the max vehicle weight is 11.793 kilograms (2600 pounds). (and 15 passengers or less) In Europe it is 3500 kg (7700 Pounds) (including load capacity). This is why vehicles like Hummer H1, Ford F450 are not allowed in Europe to be driven with a normal drivers license. You'll need a C (or D if you have more than 8 passengers).

IN DEFENCE OF ‘I AM A DERRY GIRL!’ This was posted on r/DerryGirls, a show about four Irish teen girls and their English cousin growing up in Ireland during The Troubles. One of the most heartwarming quotes from the show was James (the English cousin) screaming ‘I am a Derry Girl!’ when he decides not to leave Ireland to return to England to live with his mother. This moment is proceeded by his cousin (who’s the meanest to him out of the four girls) saying: "You're a Derry Girl now James. It doesn't matter that you've got that stupid accent, or that your bits are different to my bits, because being a Derry Girl, well, it's a fucking state of mind." So the commenter was quoting the show, not being a Plastic Paddy. It is doubly appropriate since James, the character she’s quoting, is distinctly not Irish but has an Irish mother and grew up in England.

A lucky escape for which side? The colonists who escaped British rule with a successful revolution? I’m genuinely hoping the interpreted that correctly because it confused me for a moment. Also, Americans who act like they kicked British butt and bring it up to random Brits 250 years later are probably MAGA shitheads. They love to scream about “1776 all over again!” (as well as another, impossible, Civil War) because they want to overthrow their own democratic government and though they say they’re patriots who love the US Constitution and love the Founding Fathers, yet want to install a dictator. Fuck those assholes. But I want to add that this particular case, I feel like 9/11 is the appropriate name for it because it happened the the US and that’s the US terminology. It’s more than just a calendar date, it’s the name of a national trauma. But it sounds like you think it’s edgy and funny to say you “celebrate” it, so I don’t expect a change. Okay, so "Third Country National" refers to people who aren't from this country, and aren't traveling to this country, but are there as an in-between. In the EU, this is commonly just used to mean "foreigner," but this isn't a term used in North America. What you're likely getting people confused with is the term "Third World Country" which refers to countries that weren't on either side of the cold war, and today is basically synonymous with "poor countries," since naturally countries that weren't part of the cold war were probably too poor to have a stage in international conflict.
