1 Samuel 9-10 - Skip Heitzig

In 1 Samuel 9-10, we are introduced to the first king of a united Israel, Saul. His reign began well but soured quickly. Saul looked the part of a king and even enjoyed some advantages in ruling, but as time passed, his heart turned from God. In this message, we witness Saul's anointing as king over Israel, and we learn key lessons about humility and living right so we can finish well.

Guard donkeys…There still are in this country as well. I work at a coal mine in West Virginia. And part of our mine belongs to a farmer who has lots of cows. And they roam free on the mine…along with their guard donkey lol. Thank you for this Bible study.

Thanks Pastor Skip for another great teaching - it's interesting to see God's providence at work in this whole process of Saul becoming king. God caused those donkeys of Kish to stray from home to set in motion Saul's "donkey search" that would lead him to Samuel. And Saul's unnamed servant played his role in urging Saul to go into the city to meet the "man of God" (Samuel). And it's true of all of us I believe. Only in hindsight do we recognize God as "working behind the scenes" and arranging the circumstances to lead us in His will. We need to remember that God is the creator of time and stands outside of it. If we imagine the timeline of the entire universe stretching from eons in the past to eons in the future, God sees the whole timeline from the beginning to end. He is the Alpha and the Omega. God gives a drop of this attribute to Samuel enabling him to be a "seer". Human reason needs to get on its knees before Him. God bless!

That’s what I thought , too Pastor. When you ask that question about Saul, my answer was “ Soul didn’t worship ! “ Plus, do you think God changed Saul of Thatsus’ name yo Paul so that people of the future like us will not confuse him to Saul as well as King Saul had a bad reputation?

1 Samuel 9 first King born to Hannah HER SON: ( King Saul) Fear of the people was once Prophet Samuel died his sons would reak havoc on the community. Because they had accepted bribes. Saul started out well great starts don't mean we have good ends or landings. Great plane takeoffs doesn't mean great landings. Great beginnings doesn't mean we finish well the flight. Im amazed that this was posted 2 days ago because I'm only now reading the bible for the first time and today I'm at this exact same story. After seeing the nonsense that Saul did, I have one question. If God knows the future and knows that Saul would continually make wrong choices, why would He handpick him to be KING. I just don't get it.

Hello! Im writing this reply with all respect to you. My hope is that this might help you. Perhaps, God is talking to you. That just like Saul was given a great opportunity from God to be King and to many blessings. God has given you an opportunity to serve Him and to discover all the marvelous blessing that God has for you. I think the key to answer your question. Is that a person can be predestined by God. God has an amazing plan for that person. But, God never takes your power to choose. So, your destiny will be determined by your choices. God will prompt you on all your choices. But only you can decide to obey His voice. The mentality that God controls every person is not true. He made us free agents to make choices, He will give us guidance. In your case, you just receive God, so the Holy Spirit will start leading into making choices to fullfill your destiny, which was predestined by God. Maybe, you might have to leave some relationships, maybe God will prompt you to change and substitute some habits. You will decide wether to continue to obey Him on a daily basis. God will help you. All you need is a sincere heart. NOw, the dispensation in which Saul lived was under the Old Testament. You are under a new dispensation called Grace. So, studying the dispensation of grace we live now, will also bring a lot of enlightenment. In this era, the Holy Ghost by accepting Jesus into your heart has moved inside your spirit. Saul did not operated at this level of intimacy with God. God bless you for real!
