Large Diesels like this use Compresses Air start - not a starting motor. They have a turning gear to rotate the engine for set up and repair, but this only turns it very slowly. They have a "slow turn" feature that puts reduced compressed air into the cylinders to rotate the engine for the first start to clear any water and spread the cylinder lubrication. To start the engine , high pressure air (30 bar ) is injected into each cylinder in turn to get the engine moving at speed , then the fuel is injected. It is a 2 stroke engine, turbocharged , about 800 mm bore and will have a 3000 piston stroke - turning at maximum 77 Rpm at maximum continious rating - MCR. When the main lube oil pumps are running, there is oil flowing from the crankshaft bearings, the cross head guides and the crossheads - it rains oil in the crankcase. I spent 30 years working on engines like this and it pains me to think someone says a "starter motor" gets the big buggers moving. No way.

+Tri-County Electronics There's no way you can step inside the engine when it's running! For a start, it's a flying miasma of oil droplets when running so even a Go-Pro stuck in there wouldn't see much, and you certainly wouldn't risk having a lamp in there. The video showing the scavenge ports is also not taken whilst running - all sorts of crap is flying around the scavenge ports when the engine is running. It seems to be on the turning gear and they've speeded up the video in the latter stages. I worked inside these things for 18 years, but only moved them on the turning gear whilst inside, and it's a lot slower than the video shows. The guy taking indicator cards is no expert either...

That's the engine turning on turning gear speeded up. The noise is from a running engine superimposed. No one would run an engine with no lube oil on - in fact the engine won't start unless there is lub oil pressure, and in the crankcase it flies around all over the place. Trust me, I have spent 18 years at sea on these engines. Incidentally the guy with the little rotating drum is taking "indicator cards" to work out the power output of the engine per cylinder.

You are correct. This is timelapse and speeded up. The camshaft space and crankcase are like a waterfall of oil when running. I have had perspex doors made to see a problem cam in action at full sea speed and it gets pretty messy in there.

At the beginning of the vdeo, the engine is actually running at full speed. This part of the video was taken using a strobe light which makes it look as if the engine is turning slow. Every once in a while you can see an extra flash or two and some very fast motion.

Но это снято на новой не работающей машине, при проворачивании её валоповоротным устройством ( нет нагара на поршне, масло не поступает на подшипники, нет проскока газов при рабочем цикле). Устройство для снятия индикаторных диаграмм ( майгак) не должен работать так долго. Диаграмма снимается только за один цикл, потому- что при многоцикловой съёмке диаграмма будет размытая и не пригодная для обсчета планиметром. Я отработал 8 лет на МАН K9Z 60/105E .

its a crosshead scavenged engine with the connecting rod running through a scraper box. The turbochargers blow air through coolers into the scavenge space and no air enters the crankcase. 0:42 shows the scavenge space and scav ports as the piston rises on the compression stroke.. I know - I've been inside these engines more than enough. I wouldn't put MY GoPro inside an engine!

Those big ass marine engines have hatches for each cylinder so they can inspect for ware and or do maintenance. It would be impossible for a person to be standing in there if that engine was running at speed. They are rotating that engine slowly right now. Im just guessing but i would say that engine at speed would be turning around 600-800 RPM.
