Welcome to day 24 of the Osteoporosis Awareness Month Challenge. Today is a bit different that other videos this month. Yesterday I interviewed Meredith Chen from Senior Fitness. We talked about some challenges often faced by seniors and several things that can still be done to improve strength and fitness. So let's say thank you to Meredith for sharing her knowledge and insight.

Thanks Sarah for introducing us to Meredith. Great video with many important suggestions. I especially like your "Just Breathe" shirt. Breathing correctly is so much more important than we realize. We take breathing for granted to our detriment. Meredith's comments about the importance of listening to one's body, focusing on posture and "moving" are critical. My comments don't come from a fitness fan, but based on what life has taught me in the past eighty plus years. Osteoporosis of the spine caused my wife's chest cavity to collapse and compromise her ability to breathe. Nine days in ICU couldn't help. I can't emphasize the importance to focus on posture, proper breathing and keep moving!

John, I am so sorry to hear about what your wife has had to go through! I agree with you that posture, breathing, and moving are incredibly important for maintaining our quality of life. How is your wife doing now?

Sarah, I appreciate your concern for my wife. She did not survive the ICU treatments, and passed away in the hospital bed. She had been extremely healthy for over seventy years. We're still trying to understand why all went so bad so quickly. Can only speculate at this time. Thanks, again, for all you are doing to help others avoid similar fates. Please keep up the good work.

I always get the impression from you Sarah, that when you give warnings in particular exercises to make sure to listen to your body and not overdo it, that your intention is genuine concern to make sure the exercise is beneficial and does no harm. You're different to many others who give disclaimers and warnings only to cover their own tails. You care, so you are trusted. Meredith seems to be the same.

Yes, warnings are out of a desire to prevent injuries. I think so often when we look at exercieses it is easy to think that they should look a certain way and that if ours doesn't look that way that it means we are not doing it correctly... but exercises look different in all of our bodies. It is much more important to focus on how exercises feel in our bodies. When I encountered Meredith I set up a Zoom with her berfore we did our interview and I could tell right away talking to her that she is interested in adapting exercises for different needs. I loved that about her because it is something that I is incredibly important to me too. I was really excited to share what she is doing with people because not everyone likes yoga and even if someone does like yoga it is helpful to have other good options for exercises ❤
