$1 street haircut and shave India 🇮🇳

🇮🇳 Almost every country I go to, I try to get a haircut, and getting a haircut on the street is my favorite way to do it. Usually the barbers are very friendly, talkative, and the price is cheap. This guy was fairly friendly, although quite reserved and not talkative. Regardless he was okay with me filming which was the main thing. In the end he charged me 100 INR, which is about a 100% markup on the normal price and the price he charged the person before me (again it doesn't really matter, $0.80 vs $1.20), which I wasn't crazy happy about (it's just the point). But I hope you enjoy!

@@mviv6339 I understand - it’s the same with Islamabad, lots of foreigners like most capital cities. In Islamabad people don’t gather around foreigners like they would in other parts of the country. I’d expect the same in Delhi. But this neighborhood seems almost unfriendly. I don’t want to generalize it to the whole city because I have friends from Delhi who are very pleasant people.

@@muslimrao I lived in India for a couple years. It could be anything from awkwardness or shyness in front of the camera knowing it's going to be seen by strangers or potentially shared on a social media platform (it's a really conservative culture) and while Chris is trying to communicate, they don't know how well he knows the language so the middle ground is limited conversation. My dad who is also an old timer, wants to go out for a cut at one of these street side spots and he used to pay 20 about till 2008 and since then the prices have gone up certainly due to rise in cost if living and inflation. @@chrismixlewis . Mate , Before you even got to India , i knew that you'd get a culture shock in terms of how same and at the same time different India is from Pakistan and Nepal . I believe that the reason for this is that India deals with foreigners on a daily basis . It's not a big deal for them . On the other hand , there was a curiosity within Pakistani's who don't see too many foreigners . So they were constantly asking to take photos with you and trying hard to engage with you . I once was in Semarang Indonesia with a colleague of mine and he was blonde and blue eyes . All the locals were trying to take a picture with him and i became their official paparazzi . we were both Aussies but because i had a similar skin colour as the locals , my mate was the centre of attention . Enjoying watching your posts mate . Take Care .

Humbleness and gratitude is the 2 factor that makes kindness amazing. Otherwise, you have it what I have in my white European country, fakeness and a lot of unhappy people, while everyone is kind, most extrovert, and most always smiling and greeting. They are some unhappy people, and way ahead in states like depression and anxiety. Without Humbleness and gratitude, it's just to your advantage. In this video, if we just question who was more humble and had gratitude it was the haircutter, words don't translate to experience to remember, this guy was a silent living example that got us great goosebumps and hope and more. The locals knows why the white man bothers them, and must cope with it. The white man never thinks before judging or entering a conversation, why someone is reserved before they conduct a conversation or share space together as in the video. You being kind means. Bothering people who have a lot of problems, questions, and thoughts and now they have extra questions and thoughts and don't forget people who work like 14 hours or more a day and have low sleep. So a range of out of nowhere/unusual and private questions is not what they need. The questions a white man throws is specific/private or unusual/ then there is the language barrier even if you can speak Hindi 100%, cuz of your perspective and curiosity is different than co Indians these workers speak with daily, so they hear unusual or unexpected questions, and don't understand cuz they are in a fatigue long work standing moment, and that question is not what they needed, so then something like miscommunication happens. It's very easy, you can even have long hours of conversation with a sewage cleaner/ street food vendor/ street shoe fixer. Just think from their perspective. Before you start speaking and questioning. Cuz you feel ignored but they can feel uncomfortable or bad with your questions. And then being filmed that is very very uncomfortable, especially for low wage workers doing odd jobs, even if you respect that job, you feel very uncomfortable, cuz, for example, the guys working 12-14 days as a haircutter, for him he's the son being a haircutter is the last thing he wants and is working day and night so he can get him educating, therefore he learned to respect the job, and stopped thinking about him and living for himself. But think, how bad he may be feeling that he is being filmed so being saved forever on youtube or co. And for haircutter they would be less worried, for other odd jobs, they would feel much uncomfortable. So with and without a camera will be a big difference. For you, it's not a big deal, but if they are standing reserved, the only time you can bother them (Cuz compared to you vacation enjoyer they are on their working 14 hours a day with low sleep for the last year or so) is when they are curious enough, that they can ignore, their fatigue, money problems struggles and more, to have a conversation or ask you something cuz then the energy to have a conversation with each other with some barriers matches. And why would you as a white man be patience or even visit India? Cuz otherwise you will never find the amount and depth of humbleness, gratitude, good nature. Then there is the simple comparison of east Europe, if you try to do the similar to hard long working reserved peoples, working their ass off, you find similar cant hold reserved person. But with the feeling that they are rude and angry. And for any white European living in social and economical situations as in India, they couldn't stand so humble and great as this haircutter did. As in other videos, the people in Delhi and co are very unfriendly and reserved. While this guy is reserved while being more humble and more grateful than the very extrovert white man with a camera. I don't like the people of Delhi or other very major cities like in Mumbai and co, but if we are talking about the poor/ lower class, low middle class (so there is also high middle class and average) which are about 65% of India, So where around 65% have to struggle, sacrifice and hassle every month to just have enough fo the month. You can see that they are happy and humble people with very low depression and co compared to the west and the rest. If I go to Europe, where I live, it's not the humbleness gratitude and picture speaks for itself that is there, no it's just there are things and buildings, and while everyone is nice, nice won't you give happiness. And South Asia is a destination where a lot of white people just get a waterfall of emotions and humbleness,, when they come and even have their life changed from their 1st trip to how they value things, appreciate and enjoy life. I think that just ignoring the white man, speaking few words, or standing reserved is a great way to do, in your everyday hardship, where the curious and amazed white man bothers you without thinking from your perspective while being in your country. This kind of behavior is the same as being able to say no, if you are a good man and can say no. Then you will be treated well by and in life. And in Europe, if you just don't know the local language or English well, then they just laugh you out if you bother them with unusual questions, especially the locals and even the hospitality workers.

*I truly can't believe* after the barber told you he made *NO MONEY* during the pandemic (your face at that point looked like you were weighing this up and how hard life is for the poorest) you make a fuss about him a) not talking much while he was concentrating on his job and b) charging you the foreigner price. What money did you make during the pandemic? The barber told you he made nothing. International businesses have increased prices to make up for losses. I'm really disappointed in your attitude in this video. I hold you in high esteem normally for your cultural awareness and great language skills. Showing the haircut with no talking was fine btw. We got the peaceful feel of the street. Felt more like being there. If you wanted him to chat more, then maybe offer him a chai afterwards if he had no other customers and speak to him then? He gave you a nice haircut.

Hey Chris, looks like you cut your hair in Lajpat Nagar. Rates may be more expensive in south delhi. Old Delhi or North Delhi is comparatively cheaper though. I guess thats where Bald&Bankrupt and Harald got their haircuts. As you are in Delhi, you will be able to find food from different states. In a way, you can experience different food within Delhi. Hope your other experiences are good.
