Bogachev. The reason Cap calls Hornets Bogs was because people got onto Cap for yelling WAGNAAAAAH when something would go wrong with the flight model. People didnt want Cap to make fun of Wagner anymore. He then created a scape goat named Bogachev, cant remember the rest of his name, and explained that Bogachev was a man that always played by the rules, always did things by the book. Now, he had someone he could yell at when Cap found a glitch, or an issue with the F/A-18 flight model. The video is quite old, but I remember somewhat. He even had a picture, of what seemed to be an old soviet scientist, or just a regular person. Edit: I know no one asked in this video why he calls them that, but eh.

Many years ago I played Harpoon and one of the Russian options was a TU-22 loaded out with air to air missiles. It was a fantastic concept as it meant that the bombers and AWACs could have prolonged offensive cover with the ability to close in fast and scoot back out fast and even at afterburner have incredible endurance. I never understood why a "Missile Truck" great term BTW was not a thing. An E3 AWACs with an accompanied Tanker for dedicated fighter assets as well as a 737 or some such loaded out with 30-50 air to air missiles. All being launched from behind an electronic warfare blur and guided onto target by the AWACs themselves..if the enemy wants to take down those assets then be prepared to loose the better part of one or two squadrons.

That answers all of my questions, except... how were they able to still notch the missiles, with the two AWACS, the two F-35 radars, which are also datalinked, and perhaps even the F-35 DAS, which can also generate weapons quality tracks and share them via datalink? I wonder if the game thinks they can still notch, if they can notch at least one radar? Or I wonder if the game thinks they absolutely have to have the missile's own radar locked in the terminal phase, and that's what they are notching, the missile's radar, not the two AWACS and the two F-35s, which perhaps the game thinks could not provide accurate enough terminal guidance on their own, without the missile radar too?

Now knowing that F-22's can spearhead an attack with their radars, just like AWACs. Data-Link 16 is a lethal advantage. Imagine if the AWACs are deploying Rapid Dragon, once engaging friendly assets are depleted of missiles. These assets just need to get a lock on, to use Rapid Dragon to be an extension of its arsenal. I doubt an SM-6 would be easy for a nasty to defeat once in its radar targeting acquisition range. Old legacy fighters can be used as additional missile trucks.

It'd be interesting to see this repeated with the trucks spread out, sending in missiles from multiple directions. It'd be a lot hard to notch if, by kinematically defeating one missile, you enter into the ideal envelope of another. Also, what about a fight with NO AWACS but two-three more F35s, which would be more likely in contested airspace. I have a feeling that, with a critical mass of fat Amy's, you might not need an AWACS at all. It's weird that you still have to manually select and then fire on targets. You'd think the tech would be out to auto-lock all targets so the pilot just needs to pull the trigger after selecting from a list.

I'm not sure it's entirely fair to call North Korea's air force "tiny." They have over 570 fixed wing combat aircraft and 180 trainers that could be repurposed into combat aircraft. Compare that to South Korea's inventory of 445 fixed wing combat aircraft and 105 convertible trainers and the North has a strong edge on numbers. Where the North falls behind is technology. While they have some MiG-29s, the bulk of their combat fleet is made up of Chinese-made copies of the MiG-17, MiG-19, and MiG-21. The South still maintains some pretty old fixed-wing aircraft as well, but those are F-5 Tiger II and F-4 Phantom IIs. While the F-4 and F-5 were both introduced in the early 1960s, they would still be very relevant and capable against an air force that's made up largely of MiG-17, -19, and -21 clones. And South Korea also has loads of F-15s, F-16s, and F-35s. I didn't count the 82 KT-1 Turboprop trainer aircraft in the South's "convertible trainers" list, although I suppose I should have since I counted their 20 KA-1s, which are COIN/Light Attack variants of the same aircraft. And I should probably count them all since I also counted among the North's numbers 80 Harbin H-5, which are Chinese-made copies of the IL-28 medium bomber introduced by the Soviet Union in 1950. Still, point being, if the USAF, USN, and USMC assets that are in South Korea were left out of the equation, it might make for a more interesting and possibly less lopsided fight than a lot of people think, at least until KAI starts rolling some of the KF-21 Stealth Fighters off the assembly line and into South Korea's inventory in 2026 (with 120 total on order and expected to be completely delivered by 2032).

I freaking love all of your videos Grim Reapers!! A common theme that I am realizing, especially on the large scale battles or swarm attacks, is just how vital target deconfliction is!! One force can have three times the weapons needed to accomplish their objectives, but if they over saturate one or more targets, that plan is busted!! I’d be interested to read some thoughts on how modern militaries handle this!! My guess is that targets are assigned, even down to redundancies for misses or potential friendly losses. Even in a sort of weapons free scenario, does it just come down to chatter between friendly pilots, or does the AWACS still try to direct fire? Anyway, thank you for another excellent flight Grim Reapers!!

I would have thought that the F15EX would have been the ideal missile truck rather than the Super Hornets. The US is currently buying another 130 of them precisely for that reason given that the F35s can only carry up to 6 missiles in their stealth configuration. The F15EX can carry up to 22 air to air missiles ( apparently )

Great video Cap. All those missiles have got me wondering about cost. How many Spitfires or Mustangs could you buy in 1940s money for the price of a modern missile truck? I'm guessing a couple of squadrons worth, that could probably do more damage too..... Maybe there is a video idea there?
@Appletank8
@Appletank8 Жыл бұрын
the issue is, assuming the opponent has a decent missile, the modern jet can simply track them Spitfires on radar from miles out and fire missiles, then turn around and speed away forever. Spitfires and similar aircraft wouldn't even know they have a missile locked on them until they suddenly exploded.

One data link enabled missle truck vs an entire German/Japanese bomber fleet or something would be very interesting.

Hello Reapers, I love to watch your videos, as I learn so much about the game, however I have a request for you. Could you please make a video on the DCS Supercarrier mod, which would highlight many features, especially at night during night ops. I understand that DCS recently updated the night lights/illuminations and would like to have a decent video highlighting these aspects before jumping in and purchasing the mod. I am really hoping to see the various lights such as mast lights and ship/flight deck lighting/illumination. If possible I would to see the ship from different angles: T/B/PS/SB/B/S, as this would help me tremendously in my decision going forward, or not. Cheers mates!

This reminds me of back in the day playing Chuck Yeagers Air Combat in an F-4 with unlimited AIM-7 Sparrows. Select, shoot. Select, shoot. Repeat. lol Imagine when these things become retargetable after launch.

Are any missiles able to fly dog-leg paths? Swing off to one side or the other before tracking in? I'm thinking if you launch two+ missiles at the same target, you want them to arrive at similar times from converging directions so that even terminal guidance can't be notched.

Great video as always but would've been better to do a test just the two F-35s as the datalink - i don't think their presence changed anything considering the not one, but two, AWACS aircraft

Are there any purpose built missile truck designs in real world R&D right now? I'm thinking something that's more or less a fast, mid sized cargo plane or bomber designed to carry as much weight of AA arms as possible (a C-130 could carry the mass for >100 AIM-120D's, a B-1B: >330). It would probably not use external hard points as I don't think you could fit that many.

I have never once had any complaints regarding Grim reapers videos. But the quality of this one are subpar compared to all other prior productions. The graphics were out of focus in particular.

This brings into question whether the future of air combat will consist of a handful of human-pilotes stealth fighters armed for self-defense, accompanied by one or two AWACS and several big drone missile boats. The pilots/AWACS simply designate a bunch of targets, an AI-assisted program deconflicts all the targets and assigns them to the most appropriate drone boat, and then the drones mass fire their Fox 3s. What a world that would be...
