This form is a perfect starting point for anyone who is interested in learning Tai Chi. It contains only 10 movements which are practiced on each side. It is easy to remember and takes very little time to perform. So it is great for busy people. Additionally, it contains important Tai Chi movements that can help build a solid foundation for learning more Tai Chi later.
This video demonstrates the Yang Tai Chi 10 Posture Form front the front view. Subsequent videos will show this form from the back view and will give detailed instructions on how to perform this set of movements.

I used to do Yang style, then moved to Chen... I like looking at Yang every now & then but would not go back to it anymore. Nicely done, teacher.

Thanks for sharing a bit of your training history. I started with Yang also. I have found that I like both Yang and Chen styles quite a bit because they each emphasize different aspects of Taijiquan and I like having more than one lens through which to view Taiji.

Thanks. This form works well for me. I started a couple of weeks ago. It will take me a few months of daily practice to get the basic movements down. It is a mix of struggle and pleasure.

This is a great form. I never really used to pay much attention to it, but over the years I have gained more and more appreciation for it. I am glad to hear that you are working on learning this one. @@AndrewPlitt IMO much better for a novice like me to start with a short form. I started a Wu short form last December and have practiced it every day. Every week I learn something and improve. It takes patience. Difficulties vanish. Form improves. New difficulties present themselves with better form. In time they vanish. That builds confidence, so I expect the same with this Yang short form. Also IMO the goal should be internal, as though the body is being moved. "Stillness in motion' is how Wang Xiang Zhai put it. The competition is only with one's own potential. Focused practice will pay off in pleasure in doing the form, as well as health and fitness benefits.

@@rpullman I agree. It is a great starting form. It is long enough to give a decent sample of Yang style movements and short enough to not be cumbersome or overwhelming. The simplicity of the form really lends itself to focusing on the internal aspects of the form as well. I am really pleased to hear that you are enjoying this form so much. I hope it continues to serve you well for many years to come.

​@@AndrewPlitt The Rooster and Kick steps disagreed with me so I skip them and go from Wave Hands to Grasp Sparrow. I was noticing soreness in my groin and have a family history of groin hernia (one fatal, another nearly). The soreness quickly went away. There has been a lot on the positive side as well - with awareness, focus, rooting. When those 3 aspects are in place the form flows effortlessly. If any are not quite right there is immediate feedback, which is a learning experience. Sometimes the body is not in the mood. What boggles my mind, in a good way, is that if stationary I can root any time, via simple gentle breath/focus on the dan tien, which triggers immediate reactions in my hands, feet and the back of my head. In motion it is not necessarily so but still an extremely helpful tool for everyday movement as well as executing the forms. I think this benefit is available to anyone. I have rheumatoid arthritis and bunion on both big toes. The RA is in remission and the callouses are 99% gone. So it does not matter so much to me what forms I can do or how well. The benefits amaze me and I do not need to analyze or understand them. Practice itself is a teacher.

Kathy, is our teacher in Jackson whom you taught in Pine Grove and it is a bonus to have her and watch your You Tubes. She is amazing and adheres to your teachings flawlessly. Some day I hope to meet you. Thank you for everything. I only wish sometime you can record the short form with your back to the camera. . So much easier to follow with my brain. Do you have the long form on you tube? I would love to see it in its entirety . Again Thank you. Your teaching Kathy has changed our lives.

That is a great question! Yes, this form is also referred to as the Tai Chi 8 Form. The name depends on whether you count the first and last movement or not. Andrew, random question, what do you think is the most difficult movement in tai chi -- whether it be because of balance, coordination, whatever..?

Hmmmmmm......I am not sure I have a good answer for you. When I was teaching in-person classes it seemed that the Yang style's "Snake creeps down" movement is the one that most students would struggle with. When I was learning Lao Jia Yi Lu I would say that the "Dragon Rolling Downward" was the move I struggled with the most. I think the difficultly of movements changes during the course of one's training too. Things that seems difficult before get easier and you begin to realize that there are a lot more layers to the things that seemed simple and easy before. If we are also considering competition Taiji forms, there are plenty of acrobatic movements that are ridiculously difficult. However, I would say the most difficult aspect of Taiji training is incorporating the correct movement principles into the body while training. Once that is accomplished Taiji becomes a whole new experience, but before that it is just a lot of work that does not look impressive or flashy, and it does not really feel all that useful in the beginning and people tend to get bored with it quickly. So, rather than a specific movement, I think incorporating the correct concepts of movement into training is where the real difficulty lies in Taiji training. Not sure it that really answers your question, though. 🤔 What do you think is the most difficult Taiji movement?
