1 Year 20,000 Mile Review on the Jeep 4xe Wrangler. The Good The Bad & The Ugly.

I have a had my Rubicon 4xe for about 15 months. It is fun to drive and very capable . At 12 months exactly I had the electric heater go out. It would still run just fine but would not go into battery only. I had two dealers tell me it was normal and I did not understand how a hybrid works. Finally I got a hold of a Jeep tech online to get him to send me the tech bulletins and how to troubleshoot. I took that information into the dealer and they finally agreed it was the heater. Took almost 2 months of back and forth. That has been my only issue. I love the Jeep but Jeep really needs to step up their training, especially since they are bringing out the 4xe to many different models. Jeep Cares (Wave) is just about useless.

I also had my heater go out and it forced me into FORM which made it extremely frustrating. I reached out to one of the KZbinrs (forgot his name) and he gave me some tips on how to approach the dealership. I did that and got my heater fixed within the week- 2 days without a car. I rarely get FORM since then (I drive far enough on gas that it should prevent FORM from occurring). Other than that, I haven’t had any big issues. Also, I’m glad my 2021 4xe Sahara doesn’t have blue tow hooks since it’s HydroBlue and the two colors don’t match.

I've had mine for about 6 months and have put over 6000 kms on it. I knew from the forums to check the fuses when picking it up from the dealership - lo and behold most of them were quite loose. I seated them in properly and have not had a single issue. Hopefully it stays that way. The thing is a beauty, and everyone is amazed when they see a giant Rubicon roll up silent.

The Jeep will always push to use electric first (assuming your in hybrid mode) you'll see about 25 maybe 30 miles of range in the battery. Level 2 charing, and frequency of charging is where this vehicle really shines! Did you watch our 1 month review?

I have a 2021 Wrangler 4xe and loving it. It is a fantastic vehicle and I can manage 5 days of work commute/week completely on electric (~20 miles) and use ICE only during weekends.

Same here! We would like an even larger battery but love the plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain. Doubling battery to around 35 kWh would make sense, much like in the new 2023 Range Rover Sport PHEV (which has Level 3 DC Fast Charging, too!)

I’ve had the 4xe 2022 20k km and I’ve had 0 issues. Took it off roading on a very challenging trail which involved the Jeep going through water levels that reached its hood. Still no issue

Thanks for the review. I've been a Jeep owner for many years. 2 Jeeps in the past I've used to both commute and some light wheeling in the Northeast. So, I'm very excited to see what these new Hybrid Jeeps are offering. They have double the HP and I think torque as both my 06 Rubicon TJ and 08 JK. 2 doors. Plus 49 MPG .... OMG. Best I could get was 15-18 MPG if I kept my foot out of the throttle at highway speeds. I ran 33x10.5 BFGs K-2s with a 2in lifts on both of mine. JK was a 6-speed and a V-6, 06 an automatic I-6 These new hybrids are rated at 375 HP, nealy 300ft lbs. of torque out of an I-4 and batteries. TONS of new features. I'm excited and now want one. WOW WOW WOW. Again, Great review.

My 21 Rubicon has 20,000 miles. Flawless, not even a rattle. Beautiful blue Rubicon. I wish it got more electric miles but I still use about 40% electric overall. Our other vehicle ,IE wife's car is the Ford Mustang Mach E all electric and we love that as well.

I have an early '21 Sahara as well. 30.000km done. Other than recalls and a cracked windshield (which is an issue w Wranglers) I have not had any issues, never stuck in FORM even in Montreal winters, though my mileage does sink in the winter more than yours. Great review and spot on!

Good review. I’ve had my Rubicon 4xe for nearly a year and love it. Up to 5 badges of honor with more to come. The rubicon model is very capable off road and often times makes obstacles that other JLs struggle with look easy. My #1 complaint, and it’s not against jeep, is the mod market has not caught up with the 4xe. READERS BE WARNED! Not all parts that fit a JL will fit the 4xe. The mod market is slowly catching up, but lately I’ve ran into a lot of dead ends finding a full suspension lift kit that is rated for the 4xe. The added battery weight requires heavier duty suspension than a standard wrangler, so make sure the manufacturer of the lift kit certifies the kit for a 4xe. Call them to verify. Vendor’s websites are not usually accurate when they match the part to your jeep because they assume a JL is a JL. Jeep should almost create a separate line, like JLe, to distinguish it from the other JLs. I’ve ran into the same problem with skid plates, but didn’t do my research before purchasing. Now I have two JL differential skid plates (front and rear) for sale.

Clayton overland has a great 2.5" lift kit, they do recommend - if you plan on loading the rear of the Jeep (RTT, overland camping equipment, roof rack, fridge, etc.,) add the 3.5 to the rear. MetalCloak has the Rocklander Rack System for the 4xe. slowly but surely the aftermarket will catch up.

I ended only having about 58k miles on my Jeep Wrangler. I just traded it in. Still no issue with nothing. If it was up to me, I would of been looking at a Jeep 4XE or Grand Cherokee & the new 2024 Chevy Traverse. The highway noise that the Wrangler Produces get to you after a while. I do allot of highway driving. Because we live in Brooklyn NY, my wife and I can only afford and park one vehicle. So this time around it was her turn to pick the vehicle. So we ended up with a 2024 BMW X3. Im a Jeep, F250 type guy. Im in construction and have been blue collar person all my life. Even thought Brooklyn NY is not a place for an F250 unless you have a place to park it. Hope this helps Justin.

Wow, so you were able to use Electric Mode in the winter -- That's great! I've read horror stories about that FORM preventing use of Electric Mode. We'll see how our new Rubicon 4xe does, we got it in springtime and we live here in northern Utah where it sometimes gets down to -20 degrees F. I'm prepared to use OBDLink MX+ to find any root cause of FORM or other cause of Electric Mode Unavailable.

My volt has similar system, it turns on the gas motor until it gets up to temp (5min) to use waste heat to warm coolant that then heats the battery so you don’t use up your battery trying to heat itself up

Hi, great video 👍 and I don't want to disappoint anybody, but I need to tell our story about this car. We have our Wrangler Rubicon (2022) for about 26 months now. It’s my wife car. She is in love with this model and in Belgium you can only buy the hybrid model new. We live in Belgium, no rough terrain, just our street is muddy over 1 mile when it rains. So no off-road adventures done. It drives great, when it is not in the garage for repair. After 1.5 year (about 6.000miles) the aft RH brake caliper seized. (Again, never driven in very muddy conditions or rough terrain.) Around the same time, airco inoperative >> broken wire. Also, it rains inside on the driver and passenger side. Always wet under the floor mat when it is parked in the rain. Now after about 2 years (10,000 miles) the famous death wobble around 60 miles/hour (Again, never driven in very muddy conditions or rough terrain.) >> steering shock absorber replaced and checked alignment. (JEEP advice) And now since about 3 months the car shakes from left to right at stand still and makes a metal sound. It feels like it wants to shift gear, but doesn’t. It doesn’t shake the same every day, sometimes a bit less or more. In electric mode or engine running, park, rev, neutral or drive position, doesn’t matter. It seems to come from the gearbox. The car went to the dealer, and they changed the wire loop to the electric motor in the gearbox (recommended by JEEP) It didn’t fix it. The car stayed at the dealer for 4 weeks, awaiting a solution from JEEP. No result until now. We picked it up 2 days ago (they wanted their free rental car back). No problem driving it but shacking Steven is still with us 😬 They await another solution from JEEP and are aiming for the gearbox (really?). So there will be a big chance that they need to replace the complete gearbox…to be continued… We are very disappointed as it is not a cheap car (around €70.000 here) and we already have issues as which make it look a 15-year-old car. (Again, never driven in very muddy conditions or rough terrain.) So far my advice is, look up (we didn’t) what issues u can expect on forums even if you buy a new one.

I bought a '21 4xe Ruby. EVERYTHING you stated is a mirror of my experience. I do have the clicking when turning and I simply thought that is because the 4xe and 392 have a different front suspension than the other Jeep models, I possibly and wrongly assumed that it was the nature of the 'beast'. I will get it checked out. Due to my typically short trips daily I overwhelmingly use more zapp than dinosaur juice. I average about 65-70% electric use vs 30-35% gas. So not including the costs of charging, I feel like I am getting 40-50mpg. I know there is a cost but have not calculated it yet. My electric bill went up about $30 but a lot of variables to consider. I have had mine a year and a half (purchased May 2021; a mere 2 months after hitting showroom floors). I live in Florida which environmentally is not as taxing in the cold as up North and I do NOT garage keep it. Offroad it is simply impressive. It makes me look better than I am when I let it do the thinking on crawling. I want to get new bumpers but I don't want to lose my blue hooks lol. Anyway, great review and will get my steering checked. Thanx dude!

Great video! As the original owner of a 2012 JK Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, I often think of buying a JL generation Wrangler (as a second car!). Until watching your video, I never before would have thought of buying an electric car or a hybrid vehicle---of any kind. Now, next time I'm on Oahu or Maui (my wife and I live on Molokai which has no new or used car dealers), I'm definitely going to visit a Jeep dealership and try a 4xe. (The first one of these I ever saw was pre-launch in Moab, Utah. I was interested enough to take several photos of it, but these photos were all taken early in the morning at the same hotel my wife and I had stayed in the night before.) Again, your video on your 4xe Jeep Wrangler has piqued my interest in this hybrid---but it's a hybrid Jeep Wrangler JL! Thank you very, very much! We shipped our 2012 Unlimited Rubicon JK over here from Utah where we previously lived. We've taken our two front roof panels off the Jeep perhaps 6-10 times in the almost 11 years we've had our Rubicon. (I refuse to park it outside with roof panels removed. We only remove the panels while we are with it and thus can keep it clean and dry inside.) I do love topless Jeeps. I owned and used several different Land Rover "series" vehicles for almost 30 years before moving into a Jeep. I had canvas tops for two of my Land Rovers, as well as station wagon (with tropical roof panel) tops, and also a truck cab. If we had a large garage on Molokai, we'd, undoubtedly, use it for a Jeep with the top off we'd drive every chance we got! (Our small, 1-car garage, is presently stuffed with building materials our Jeep and our Buick Enclave are thus exposed to the Hawaiian sun 365-days a year.) Thanks for your reply! Fuel oil refresh. I was able to get this to go away by cycling the "key" on and off a couple times then letting it run for a few minutes. There is no reserve battery capacity. The gas engine will provide power to the electric when the battery is dead.

That would require a much bigger battery which I don't think there is space for in this tiny vehicle. Maybe they can later on do a 3 row SUV using the Jeep Gladiator frame (or at least a 2 row extended SUV on the Gladiator frame)... 4xe High Altitude after 8k miles had very bad shutter when traveling above 55 mph. Turned out that from dampers needed to be tightened. Other than that no issues

Thanks for the vid! I can say that in winter, in an unheated garage, it takes about 20-25% longer to charge, at least at 120V. I also do not have any FORM issues. And yeah, there's a LOT of misinformation about this particular PHEV, with the Stellantis marketing department to blame in many cases.

The reason you have an issue with the electric mode when the temp. is in the single or minus digits F is the lithium ion batteries do not like cold. It takes time for your unit to warm up the battery to operation temp. so in that time it will lay idle. Just another way of protecting the batteries. Jeep has both a warming and cooling mode for the battery to extend its life.

I bought a wrangler 4xe with the cold weather package in January 2022. I live in Winnipeg, lots of snow and very cold (-20 C on average) in January and February. This vehicle has been great. Of the 4000 km we have put on it, approx. 3000 have been in electric mode. Regarding FORM, basically for the 2 coldest month, we were in hybrid mode, which has great gas savings, but electric was challenging, to the point we just didn't worry about it. Summary, if you can't read a manual, have little to no patience and maybe are not a little mechanically inclined...you probably shouldn't buy this vehicle.

That battery seems to take up quite some space in such a small vehicle. Jeep should do a 4xe on the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. The false bottom in the cargo area, especially for the extended length, would be a perfect place to stick a hybrid battery and an inverter for something similar to Ford's ProPower.

I took it to the dealer for all the updates & had my fuses checked (because I read the forum suggestion) by the dealer for correct seating. Thoughts on the current recall due to exploding batteries? Apparently Jeep is asking owners not to charge the vehicles and park them outside? I was interested in trading in my 2016 JKU for the 2025 4xe but now I'm worried about that issue. Might be best to just hold on to the 2016. It's at 112,000 miles but has been paid off for the last few years (nice not having a car payment)...

Keep in mind, many reviews aren't from owners. The 2024's are the same platform, but many of the computer updates have been fixed -needless to say. Keep in mind, the differences between a 4xe and standard JL have not changed.

What a POS ! This electric vehicle is a colossal pain in the ass. - 15 amp home service takes over 12 hours to charge - battery does not charge while the engine is running (no alternator system) - sucks power (5 mile trip to store takes 20% of the charge) - no 110 volt inverter which is required to run a laptop while charging the vehicle at a charge station. - the battery only lasts 20 miles - no DVD player to watch a FULL length movie while changing - lack of storage, (this is give and take) - this POS now sucks all my reserve power and then some from my solar system - and worst of ALL my friends and neighbors see a hybrid and think I’m a brain dead liberal

My 4xe has 15K. Out of nowhere I had an issue charging the Lithium battery. I could charge the car till I could get into the Mopar dealer. Several updates resolved it. Refresh and not electric available has shown up. I wish the salesman walked me threw these issues.

@@floridastate6543 There is an issue then. The battery that's available to use for electic mode is actually just a portion of the actual capacity. You should never have a loss in power.

Whats the cost to replace the electric battery? I have a '19 Wrangler JL and love it. That said I live in Montana where temps get -40 for days and like any other battery charging and recharging a battery after time will deplete them. I've heard the batteries are not a warranty item and the replacement cost is very expensive .

My volt has similar system, it turns on the gas motor until it gets up to temp (5min) to use waste heat to warm coolant that then heats the battery so you don’t use up your battery trying to heat itself up

Honestly, it was from someone in a 4xe forum who cut them out in vinyl. If you go to a Jeep dealer and order a new 4xe badge - the actual Jeep 'e' in that logo will fit in there perfectly.

Good Review, thanks for taking the time. Your HA 4xe is almost a twin to mine outside of the interior color, looks good. I must say that I've had a slightly different experience that is a major concern for my long term confidence. I purchased my 4xe in June 2021 and to date mine has been in service 3 times for a total of almost 7 weeks. Two of those were related to Battery/Charging issues and the other having to do with Ball Joints. All of these were related to Technical Bulletins (not true recalls) and were know issues with the vehicle. Besides the lengthy time out of service I have concerns with Jeep Dealerships being prepared and able to service the platform as each time I bring it in there's only 1 Technician certified to work on it, regardless of the nature of the issue. I'm sure Jeep and the Dealers are working to improve on this given the extent of 4xe models launching in the next year, so we'll see. For now I have a Bronco on order and expected in early 23...will see how my 4xe makes it over the next few months.

Honestly, keep in mind if you buy new (until they discontinue it) you get $7,500 tax credit too. I've never been charged to charge my Jeep at a campground. To be fair, most people don't even know its plugged in. I imagine as EV's become more common we'll see campgrounds pay more attention to it. My RV does have solar, but it's basically to just keep the house batteries charged - not enough to charge off of. I have one for my 4xe Rubicon, 1. You have to catch them on sale, u get about 100+ off. 2. It’s not that noisy, alittle more obv than a hard top. But super easy to install and use. Def get one

Is there a list of super cold or hot places with Jeep Wrangler 4xe's? I live in Fort St. John, BC, Canada and recently the temps. here were -40C (-50C wind chill) with lots of snow and the roads not maintained properly or proactively. In the summer, the roads here have lots of potholes. I really, really love Jeep Wrangler 4xe but I really want to know if it's good in these kinds of temps. and road conditions. Any info would be great, thanks. Just an added info, I'm not an off-roader, drives very, very minimal, slow & careful driver, doesn't know a lot about cars and I might have to park this on the street. Thanks.

RE: Flat Towing Jeeps I believe the new Grand Cherokee 4XE Base model cannot be flat towed. The rest of the trims of the 4XE Grand Cherokee can.

@@JeepsOnTheRun nope, you're still right from what I can tell. Early release notes had the Quadra Track 1 system in the Base GC 4XE. It is now listed as having the Quadra track 2 system and from what I gather it can be flat towed.

Thanks! We use 87, but we so don't drive it hard. The owners manual does suggest 93 for full performance, but we've not noticed any negative effects

Mine runs absolutely perfect on 87 octane regular. The engine adjusts to the fuel. Don't waste your money on high octane fuel, no matter what someone might say.

I just bought my jeep two weeks ago less than 200 miles on it and a rock busted out my windshield is this something that’s going to happen regularly? I never had an issue with other cars but this is the first time it seems like everything hits the windshield very hard from bugs to dirt whatever is it because the windshield standing straight up??

Yes that’s the reason they break so easily. Hopefully you got extended warranty to cover it because it’s probably going to happen again but one thing I will say is do not tailgate or you’ll be in the shop every other month. Keep a cars length back to help with rocks flinging up at you.

I got my 4xe in May and I only have 600km on it don't use it often because of where I live and how close I am by foot to get to work. I checked my oil live a few weeks ago it gave me 52% life left which is stupid and makes no sense.

These were done at the dealership. If you've been for anything, you've likely been updated. If your regeneration breaking button stays engaged on a restart of the Jeep - you've recieved the updates.
