I bought the regular JX thanks to the help of your review. I’ve had it for a bit over a year now and really enjoy using it. It was a huge step up in speed and grind quality vs my old Hario Skerton. My only complaints are having to brush the fines that stick to the threads and catch cup after every use and the rubber grip sleeve that’s loosened and annoyingly slips when grinding. I’ve read other ppl have problems with the rubber sleeve as well.

This is without question the best, most thoughtful, most informative review video about anything I’ve ever seen. There’s definitely a JX in my future, the Pro doesn’t add anything I need, and any doubts I might have had about either have been thoroughly addressed. My Aeropress and I thank you!

Life hack - I've used a vacuum cleaner with hose attachment to clean out my JX Pro, it just sucks out most of the fines. Also, calibrating back to zero is do-able but a minor pain, the manual supplied with the JX Pro explains the procedure so no having to 'ignore the numbers'.

I used to own 1zpresso E-pro, What I liked about it was the build quality, It was all metal body. The negative was it could only hold too much coffee due to its slim figure. Also, disassembling the grinder was a lil bit work compared to my comandante. But, I agree that 1Zpresso offers best value for money in high-end manual grinder market.

I also have a Timemore Nano that I carry around with my Aeropress Go and the rest of my coffee travel kit. I have no complaints about the Nano, but the grinding process feels better with the JX. The Q2 was an alternative, but the size of the Nano kind of led me to buy it, although not without some regret/curiosity for the Q2.

Excellent and pretty much what I was hoping for. The tip about the need for less deep cleaning was very helpful- that will speed me up as I was taking mine completely apart each day. No more and now I understand why. Yes, I am disappointed that you could not get specific about dial in spots for pour over - but now I also understand why. Not surprising, especially when considering I likely prefer my coffee a bit different from you. But I do appreciate the tip of dialing back 6 clicks to tighten it back up. I was going forward another 6 clicks. I'll try your approach and let you know what I think. Again, great video and I can't thank you enough for making me aware of this grinder. I'm 10 months in and still love this grinder. Great product!

Funny how I kept calling it “one zpresso” and didn’t know it was called easypresso lol. Anw I’ve had my JX Pro for about a month, my first grinder so I have no frame of reference but it’s working well! Paired with my Cafelat Robot the learning curve was quite short for me to begin getting very yummy shots! But hand grinding for espresso everyday is a real workout altho it takes only a bit more than 1 minute for me... and this thing is heavy. I also wish there was a way to easily calibrate the zero point.

Great stuff as always! Got a Comandante and a Q2, been playing with them side by side for a little while now - and I like the Q2. It’s great for travel also. Still feel the Comandante is leading in the build quality department and it produces less fines - my subjective meaning only. One thing I feel could be better on the Q2 is the threads, they seem so easy to break, so I’m very light handed with it - would like the beefier threads like the Comandante.
@coffeechronicler
@coffeechronicler 4 жыл бұрын
I would also suspect that the Comandante is better for daily use compared to Q2. But probably they have each their pros and cons? I'd estimate the bearings and overall engineering to be better on any (or most) of the 1z grinders, while UX aspects, details and material choice is generally better on the Comandante.

Thanks for the video, this is a really good channel with lots of attention to detail, I'm glad I found it. I've had a JE-Plus for the last year and a half which (initially) I primarily bought for my Cafelat Robot manual espresso maker. My old grinder was not capable to grind espresso size. The JE-Plus has been a great choice for that, the tiny steps you can adjust to are very helpful to dial in a perfect shot. I haven't noticed any deterioration, it grinds away as on the first day, and I've used it 3-5 times daily for the past 18 months, I'm still on the same "base grind setting" which only varies a bit for some beans/blends or sometimes I grind one click finer when the coffee is a good week to 10 days after the roast when the extraction seems to get a hint faster. I've been a coffee noob then and espresso being quite unforgiving for the smallest mistakes has been a steep learning curve, but I've made very noticeable improvements. I've since also become more interested in pour-overs which right now I'm also grinding with the JE-Plus with good results (I'm still a pour-over beginner), but I am tempted to get a second grinder for this purpose. I'd absolutely choose 1Zpresso again. Maybe the JX Pro, but I quite like the JE-Plus magnetic receiver, I wonder if the (magnetic) K-Plus is a good pour-over choice, but it's also quite a bit more pricey.

@AnatolBogun
@AnatolBogun 2 жыл бұрын
@@coffeechronicler thanks for the tip. I couldn't find the heptagonal one though, it seems to be a limited edition and all sold out, even on Aliexpress. With all the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals out, I now decided on the regular JX just for pour-overs (for more than 30% off), keeping my JE-Plus my dedicated espresso grinder where it really excelled so far, especially with the magnetic receiver with blind shaker which fits perfectly onto the Robot portafilter. Actually, the main reason to pass on the Q series for me is the capacity which seems to be primarily for one cup, but I often use ~30g which at least on paper seems to be over the Q2's capacity. Anyway, thanks again, your channel is really informative and interesting, I already learned a lot.

@@coffeechronicler thank you for your reply. Actually i am from the UK, but i live and have a coffee roasting business here in Malaysia, Yes the coffee culture is very interesting here. There is quite a long tradition of kopitiam, the small cafe or food stands, these are really popular with the older generation and they sell some traditional Chinese or local foods along with Kopi O style coffee. This kind of coffee is usually very low quality Robusta beans, burned in either a Wok or a metal drum over an open fire, with a ton of margarine and sugar added to the roast, its not my favorite brew haha. A lot of younger people now prefer the taste of imported beans and there is a lot more proper coffee shops opening all the time. Also a lot of people are into drinking espresso and pour over at home, so there is a lot of people here that are really into good quality coffee products. Like i said earlier, along side my coffee roasting business, i also sell other coffee related products. One of these products is the 1Zpresso grinders and these grinders are very popular here. Its quite difficult to get accurate user information about these products, ok i can ask my 1Zpresso agent for information, but actual user information is 100% better. Thats why i really like your video, you have been using this product long enough to know what you are talking about and you make some excellent points about the comparison between the Comandante and the 1Zpresso grinder, i get asked that question all the time and based on what my customers say to me, they also seem to think that the Comandante is the "go to grinder", dont get me wrong, the Comandante is an excellent grinder, but i honestly think that the JX-Pro is just as good and half the price. I hope that you dont mind me sharing you video with my customers here, i am sure that there is a lot they can learn from your video.

I do this too, but have since switched to giving the beans a little spritz and not putting water directly in the grinder. But stainless steel is very rust resistant. Also, a static-prone region is a dry region, the residual water will evaporate much quicker. The drops of water in your grinder is likely less humid than the Taiwan home of 1Zpresso employees. But in case I'm wrong, I always open up the dial to an unreasonably coarse setting and let it air out before storing.

Hi Tim, I think Richard's answer pretty much nails it. Coffee grounds are very hydrophilic so I don't think RDT is a problem. What I'm worried about is more people washing the parts, and then letting them dry with a bit of moisture on.The coffee oils also help to protect the burrs. I have many grinders, so usually I will put some of these silica gel sachets in the hopper and chamber if I'm not using them regularly just to be safe.

Great videos and like other have said, thank you for your coverage of the 1zpresso line. I’m wondering if you have considered making a video on grind settings you typically use on the jxpro. Like others I find the chart that comes with it suggests a grind a bit too coarse for v60 (range of 3.2 to 4.4), I’m usually in the high 2.x range. I’m sure we’d love advice from an expert!

I do not travel or camp a lot, so I only use hand grinder occasionally. For the price at 119 usd, I’d rather spend 20 more dollars to get a electric grinder. Oh, maybe I forgot to mention that. It's because the adjustment mechanism on the Pro model is more granualar, so you'll be able to dial in the shot better. On Jx you can end up between two settings, so on one is too fast and the other too slow.

I love the polymer bean jars that Commandante sells separately. I don't think the Commandante's bean jars are inrechangeable with 1zpresso. Does anyone sell extra bean jars (with lids) for the JX so that you can grind directly into the extra jar and close it with a lid to store ground coffee for a day or two?

What pour over setting do you guys use on your JX Pro? Assuming 1 full rotation equals 10, I generally grind at 23-26, but that ends up looking much finer than what CC seems to be using, much closer to espresso than medium. I generally enjoy 22gr/500ml brews, so perhaps he is getting to the same place by using more coffee/coarse grind vs my less coffee/finer grind.
@coffeechronicler
@coffeechronicler 4 жыл бұрын
I generally use 3 full rotations on Jx Pro for pour over but I also brew at 1:16 (typically 25 g/400ml). My guess is that you'll need a a much finer grind for the recipe you mention.

8:30 the difference is likely due to the differences between the Conical vs Flat burrs, I haven't had a chance to test and compare too much just yet, but I think the K-plus model I have tastes similar to the Niche Zero which is also conical burr and the Flat Burr Vario is just different.

@@coffeechronicler currently comparing between niche zero and 1zpresso k-plus for espresso / cappuccino my testing is still limited since just finally got my coffee decent and dialed in on both grinders for a few shots and probably inconsitant due to all the espresso variables. But it seems the k plus is very capable as an espresso grinder, compared to niche I'd say both being similar conical burr grinders the flavour profile was similar but I noticed more bitterness in straight espresso before adding sugar or milk but as a cappuccino how I usually enjoy my drinks that little extra bitterness helps with percieved coffee strength and i may actually prefer that. Once I get my baratza vario fixed up I'm more interested in comparing those since I think the 1zpresso and niche are similar.

Hello! Thanks a lot for a fantastic and informative video! Was about to go for the Timemore slim until i saw your review on that which made me really consider the JX and now after watching this video it's definitely what I'll go for. I'm not sure though wether to go for the basic or the pro? I exclusively brew pour over - but the idea that the grinder could work for espresso if I would like to get a machine in the future is appealing. From the online-supplier i consider they are quite similarly priced. (about 20$ more for the PRO). The PRO also comes with a 2 year warranty (instead of 1 year for the basic) and the adjustment wheel on top really do seem handy (though I may not need the extra steps). So it seems like I would just get an even more versatile grinder by going for the PRO instead of the basic. Is there something i'm missing that should make me consider the basic instead - despite the above mentioned aspects? Thanks again!
@coffeechronicler
@coffeechronicler 2 жыл бұрын
I would go for the basic one in your case. It's also okay for espresso, and the construction is so simple that nothing can really go wrong with it. If there is still room in the budget and you really want to future-proof, you could consider K Max.

What do you think about America Test Kitchen’s claim that coffee brewed with blade grinders are indistinguishable from burr grinders in the double blind test that they apparently conducted? Personally, I find it suspicious. If it really was indistinguishable to a coffee enthusiast, then grind size shouldn’t even matter at all right? It just extremely hard to believe for me, as someone who noticed a big improvement when I upgraded from my cheap skerton with its inconsistent grinds. Must have been an error in the method of brewing or maybe the testers weren’t coffee enthusiasts? 🤷‍♂️ Would love to hear your thoughts!
