The K6 can be assembled in two ways: by default it comes preassembled in the "use screwdriver" mode: there's the rubber ring/gasket on the lid and the handle comes off alone (the lid stays in place). However there's a smaller rubber ring that comes with the K6, that helps attach the lid to the handle (the big ring should then be removed). In this mode the handle comes off together with the lid, like in most other grinders.

Just found your video because a friend of mine is looking for a hand grinder and I was interested in what's available since I bought mine. I'm using the KinGrinder K6, and you've missed something when you say the handle comes off really easily. The manual states that you should remove the silicone ring on the cover and attach the cover to the handle using the included smaller ring if you're hand grinding. This helps it to stay on since you can't rock the handle as much when the cover is attached to it. (Like the Comandante but more stable.) As you said, the way it comes from the factory (i.e. the way you were using it) is for when you're using a power drill to drive it. Imo, in terms of value for money it takes the cake. External adjustment, decently large capacity, very solid handfeel. And I really dislike magnetic catch cups so it's basically perfect for me. Edit 2: Oh, also I like the way they did the adjustment dial with the vertical/horizontal scales. The Lido looks amazing though, if I were to even think about an addition or upgrade it would be the one I'd consider. Thanks for your effort. Edit: Am I at the level that I could distinguish between the K-plus and the K6? Most likely not, so I'm just gonna be satisfied with what I have. :)

Cool beans. I got myself a K-Max last week. Nice to have my choice validated. Also, as a blind coffee drinker, it’s a very accessible grinder. The tactile feedback with the clicks is great and being able to always get to zero is crucial. I was too lazy to try to figure out how to calibrate it, so I had my sighted wife do it for me. I initially gotten the GX pro, but had to return it as it was no way for me to find the zero or otherwise set any particular grind setting.

@@LanceHedrick Yes, haven’t used my Virtuoso once since I got it. I want to eventually try my hand at espresso, but from everything I read, the virtuoso wasn’t going to cut it. A lot of the higher end grinders started including features that I wasn’t going to be able to use and figured why pay for stuff that I couldn’t access like built in timers and scales… touchscreens and capacitive buttons are the bane of visually impaired/blind people‘s existence. Often, the more retro/old fashion the better. I.E. hello! Hand grinder. Now I’ll have to figure out what type of espresso machine would be most accessible. I’m leaning towards something manual as opposed to semi automatic or automatic. Again, those awful touchscreens and capacitive buttons. But hey! I found a good grinder, I have a smart scale that can weigh to the 10th of a gram and a timer on my iPhone. I’m getting there. Ever try working and espresso machine blindfolded? Any sughestions?

@@Comacrin most e61 group head machines are pretty tactile, despite being “semi auto”. The only downside is the group head itself tends to get very hot, so navigating around that may be a challenge. Some dual boiler machines are also quite tactile with clicks buttons and switches, but have the brewhead housed away, making it harder to burn yourself - I’m thinking of the Lelit Elizabeth and rancilio silvia pro - you can have a sighted person set the PID temperature for you once and you shouldn’t need to touch it again.. all the rest of the operations are quite tactile.

@@LanceHedrick Appreciate the feedback. I’ll probably have to figure some sort of workaround for the pressure gauge since I’m not aware of any sort of accessible one other than a talking tire pressure gauge which I’m not sure if that math converts. Other than that, I’m sure like most things, with time and repetition, you eventually get a feel for something. I’ve also read up on the Cafelat Robot, but I’ll check out the Flair. Again, thanks.

Great video! A few notes from an OE Lido user of a couple years: I feel like the size actually makes it really nice to use in a home setting. I brace the bottom of the grinder against the counter or my body rather than holding the entire thing suspended in the air. I believe Doug and Barb may have a video on this technique. Also, I used to grind 50-70g for a coffee pot every morning. Took about 2 minutes. Would be great if noise is a big issue for you. I have the Lido E, and my main complaint has been the adjustment mechanism, which is improved in the OG at the expense of the loading mechanism. If you're using it for espresso mostly, I'd probably take that trade and get the OG. If you're making a lot of auto-drip or chemex, I'd probably get the E or ET.

Just bought a 1Zpresso X-Pro (yeah that's new) and I really, really love. It has the external adjustment system, 40mm heptagonal burrs (similar to the Q2) with 12.5 microns per click and costs only 150€/$. It is crazy how much value you get out of it. Compared to the K Max (300$), it falls only short on grinding time and capacity, when talking about specs. I recommend looking into it, if you don't want to spend 250+ $/€.

Wow, what an honor for 1zpresso to have Lance select the K Plus as the best overall hand grinder! I have the JE Plus and before opting for this model, I deliberated over the J and K series for a long time. It seems the JE Plus is not as popular as the K series, as the former is not as versatile (the makers suggest JE Plus is more suited for espresso). However, I recently compared brewing aeropress with the JE Plus vs Timemore Chestnut C2. The coffee with JE Plus had a lot more flavor, more depth, and was nuttier. I don't think you can go wrong with any 1zpresso hand grinder.

Thanks for the video lance, to answer your question I routinely brew 50-60g of coffee for me and my partner in our french press or when I make cold brew, but having to do that in multiple phases doesn't bother me at all. "I'm insane." Yup, I watched the entire thing (in one sitting). Thanks for that! What I like about the OG is that it's calibrated and produces grinds based on MICRONS. It drives me nuts that the coffee world is still using subjective terms (fine, med-fine, coarse) and proprietary "clicks". We ought to be able to provide micron ranges for various types of coffees. Yes, there's uneven grind size, especially in lower-end grinders and there are varying amounts of fines and chaff, but we ought to be able to have a standard measurement. Oh, wait, that would be MICRONS.

I absolutely agree with this. The industry using words like "medium" is driving me nuts, this is so subjective. I am sure medium to me does not look like medium to someone else. 1. Can anyone explain to me how the Lido OG is different from say a 1zpresso K series (I own a k series) from a "grinding in terms of microns" point of view? From the video, other than the clicks being labeled in micros there does not sound like a big difference in terms of measuring/grinding in microns. It is my understanding that the conical burr for most hand grinders moves up or down when you change the setting. This sounds the same as the Lido OG to me. Assuming both are calibrated at 0 with the burrs touching. The OG would be 1125 microns when the k-series is 50 clicks (22.5 microns * 50). 2. What is the burr gap Lance mentioned? I am thinking when calibrating the grinder if I have both burrs touching that would be 0 microns.
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick 2 жыл бұрын
So, most companies assume perfect alignment when discussing micron movement. "Burr gap" assumes said perfection. But, none are perfect and few, even if aligned down to .o2mm from the factory, don't keep alignment after being cleaned. So, the measurement is one given to cover the burr gap, but since alignment is an issue, saying 30micron burr gap is wrong because likely one side is a bit more and one a bit less. This makes boulders out of one side more prevalent and fines out the other. Measuring vertical movement is more objective because you aren't assuming alignment. Just measuring the literal movement along an axis.
@MrTerenceLoh
@MrTerenceLoh 2 жыл бұрын
@@LanceHedrick Where I am coming from is don't that all grinders measure in terms of vertical movement 1 way or another. eg. Lido OG = 1125 microns K-series = 50 * 22.5 microns = 1125 microns C40 = 75 clicks (with red clicks) * 15 microns = 1125 microns Burr gap would exist in the Lido OG as well isn't it? Unless it comes from factory calibrated based on the microns adjustments and accounting for the burr gap. But the burr gap be misaligned if you took it apart for cleaning? So effectively after you have zeroed all grinders, the micron would really be: said vertical movement + burr gap (whatever that may be)? I looked on google but couldn't find much discussion on burr gap on hand grinders so pardon the many questions. Might be something I am not understanding correct. Thank you for the great information and you definitely earned a place on patron. Cheers.
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! I understand the confusion. So, the burr is fixed on the axel on the Lido and the collar doesn't move. So, they are aligned even after deconstruction. The others are rough guesses of movement based on aperture and thread pitch. You know what would be easier than typing this out? (Not to sound curt- it is 5am here and I still haven't slept haha!) Orphan espresso has a video discussing this. Will post in follow up comment

For the adjustment wheel, I wish they'd have done at least like the date on watches, just a little window and you see a number but oh well. It would still be analogue og style and at least you would know what's going on. But even with that, the tactile feedback is kinda soft and sometimes it freewheels, which, with no markings, really makes you go -____- As always, thanks for the content and cheers !

After using the Kingrinder K6 just a few times, I REALLY appreciate the number system. It's SO easy to adjust and remember what setting you used for what coffee. For instance... with an Ethiopian coffee I enjoy, 1-46 for espresso. 2-46 for filter. Such a pleasure to work with. The 3 grinders I had before are not so easy to work with, nor have the level of adjustment the K6 does. They got something going on over there. Just a thought... maybe you could make your own system of markings on your current grinder to give it some sort of repeatability. Get those creative juices flowing. Maybe think on it over nice cup of freshly roasted coffee... 🤔

It would also be nice to just hear your thoughts on the original timemore burrs paired up next to these since they are all in the $100 range. I think it would make a nice budget grinder video. Another thing people often don't take into account is wholesale. Kingrinder and timemore wholesale directly to shops and roasters making it very approachable for them to get these grinders into customers hands and I think that aspect is really important. Lastly I wanted to end saying I have a kingrinder K6 and I actually thought it was too similar to tell the difference from my comandante. I'm wondering if they possibly have an alignment issue and that is due to them saying you can use a drill on it haha. Anyways just wanted to say thanks again for another Great video and looking forward to more soon!

Real quick- I think it goes K series>c40>k6. The k6 and c40 are closer imo than k plus and k6. All are great, tho, and I doubt most would perceive a difference. And yes. I need a reset period on manual grinders but do plan on doing a budget video! I want to do it justice so it'll Likely be 6 months

@@LanceHedrick using the above ranking, if im going to only be using this 50 times a year (something like once a week) and use electric for espresso anyway, so just like a weekly pour over or 2, does the K6 make the most sense given the price? so like, it's definitely a good grinder, it might not be the best compared to K series or C40, but if i'm only using it once a week, then does it come close enough that the value is really there. idk if that make sense lol

There are two gaskets that come with the Kingrinder. The black one that keeps the cap on is used for a power drill. There is a white smaller one that you put on, instead of the black one, to keep the plastic cap attached to the handle when not using the power drill.

@@LanceHedrick I confirm that you were suppose to get a small white gasket to hold the handle on the cap/cover 😉 ! In fact, I found easier on workflow to feed the grinder with beans to get rid of the black gasket around the plastic-cover and to fix the handle to the cover with the white gasket. The handle attached to the cover remain in place fairly strong enough without the black gasket and it made much easier and quicker to remove the cover/lid without the black gasket by just lifting the handle to add beans to the grinder (I never had issue with the handle slipping off the chaff without the black gasket around the lid). For the price paid for the K6, for me it's the best value and a bang for the bucks 🙃

I also got from alixpress and it came with the white gasket that holds the cap firmly in place. Actually, I left both of them, white and black, since it’s very secure. For the price, it’s unbeatable.

FWIW on the Kinu, the anti-slip 'nose' piece is much more comfortable if you wrap your index finger round it rather than letting it dig into your thumb. Also you mentioned it had one of the best burr alignments but with mine at least, the burr is slightly lose on the shaft which I fixed with one layer of Cellotape wrapped round the shaft. One layer of Cellotape is around 30 microns! 🤷‍♂️

I was about to ask the same question. I love the Aegrind's way of setting grind size, stepless with numbers visible on the top lid, so Lance would probably love that too. For you all insane nerdy people like me, k series have an increase/decrease in particle size of ~9.68um per click (yep, I'm talking about particle size, not burrs gap) Burrs gap is 22.5um for K series. And from my tests, Comandante C40 translates to the K series at 1:3.1 ratio I.e. 30 clicks on Comandante translates to K series as 30x3.1 = 93 clicks (number 9 and 3 clicks) Comandante particle size change is 30um per click (default mechanism) Even at equivalent settings, I find the C40 producing a more acidic cup. K is tastier, more neutral and balanced overall, presenting acidity & sweetness in a better way. 1Zpresso is literally knocking the ball out of the park with the K series. Awesome hardware 👍

Lance, thanks for the video. Great to hear your thoughts on all these. I'm wondering if you could comment on a few things: 1. What have you generally found in terms of the amount of beans it takes to season a new grinder, say for something like the K-plus? 2. Does grinder to grinder variability have much of an impact on cup quality? I'm wondering what the setting is on your K-plus (when properly calibrated) before you hear the burrs starting to rub (e.g. 0.5, 0.3, 0.8?)? Comparing with other K-plus owners that should give a good idea of how alignment (and grind distribution) is from unit to unit. 3. It would be great if you would create some short videos sharing some recipes made with your favorite couple of grinders. It might be a good starting point to get a "community" going for these other grinders, like exists with the Comandante. Cheers

Thank you sooo much, Lance! I love hearing your thoughts on these grinders and I'm also happy that your favourite grinder is the one that I was looking at getting. My Kinu M47 and future KMax should make a nice combo!

The KinGrinder comes with a small band to attach the handle to the lid. In your showcase, that is missing and the reason the handle is coming off. I have the K6 for Flair 58 and enjoy it!

Owning both Remi burrs, I can confirm that the espresso burrs are MUCH MUCH MUCH worse for filter coffee hahaha. Excellent vid!
