1 year with Amex GOLD (UK): how much I saved & will I keep it?

I've had the Amex Gold for 1 year and now the £160 annual fee is about to kick in.
I'll go over the benefits of the American Express Gold card that I've used and how much value I got out of them over the past year. I'll then explain whether I decided to keep the card and share the details of the retention offer I got from Amex.

I was going to ask: if you already have Silver status in BA which gives you lounge access, you'd see little point in keeping the Amex Platinum as the lounge access benefit is somewhat covered by your airline status? Question: As a Sainsburys shopper and Nectar points collector, should I stay with Amex Nectar (2nd year already £25 paid) or think about Gold Amex? At least for the 1st free year? Not available for bonus because of nectar AmEx already. Not using BA, flying twice a year maximum on holidays with different companies? Your thoughts, Like what you do 👍👍✌✌

Thank you! If you're after Nectar points and not planning to convert them into Avios, then your current Amex Nectar is better: £100 spent on it give you 200 Nectar points. On Amex Gold the same £100 will only get you 133 Nectar points. It will only go up to 200 Nectar points if you include the "Earn as you go" bonuses (the ones you get for every £5k spent on the card). However, if the other Gold benefits are useful to you (like the lounge passes and Deliveroo), it could make sense to get the card for the first year and see how it goes.

Hi due i have the gold and ba premium. Was thinking to drop the gold in jan when renewing but will ask for retention. My BA premium card rebews in february. You thjnk theyll give me a retention offer for that aswell?

Hi I have the US Amex Gold and Platinum my self. I am traveling to Europe and UK is one of my main places I am going too. Does a lot of restaurants, fast food and grocery store take the Gold card in UK?

Hey, most places don't have a problem with Amex, so you'll be fine. But I'd still have a backup Visa or MasterCard since occasionally you could run into smaller shops / restaurants that don't take Amex.

80k points alone justify the annual fee if you plan to maintain a similar earning level in the next year (and a retention offer helps with that). Did you also make use of Deliveroo and / or lounge access at all? In general I think it's definitely worth asking for a retention offer (there's no harm in trying) and you can decide from there.

Hey, as I mentioned in the other comment, I personally started with a credit building credit card before moving on to Amex. Also be careful with minimum income requirements that Amex introduced last year!

Do you know how the gold supplementary card holder lounge access works? If I get a supplementary card for my wife, does she get 4 lounge accesses in addition to mine? If not, can I get access to the lounge for both of using 2 of my passes?

Supplementary card holder on the Gold card doesn't get any lounge passes. However, you can use multiple of your passes at a time to get guests in.

I am now having BA Platinum Plus and thunking to apply gold card...but I did call them said I can't entitle welcome offer on my situation as I have amex card...Question: is it still worth it to apply without welcome offer? Or I wait 24months for welcome offer?

Hey, how much do you think you'd make use of the Gold benefits (the 4 lounge passes, £120 Deliveroo credit)? Also do you value MR points higher than Avios? As a side note, if you want to consider Amex Platinum, you're still eligible for a welcome bonus there. It's 30K MR points (or I can share my referral link which will increase the bonus to 50K).

You're eligible for the Platinum welcome bonus if you haven't had a Membership Reward earning personal Amex card in the past 24 months (so the BA cards don't count as they earn Avios and not MRs). The same is stated on the Amex website: www.americanexpress.com/en-gb/credit-cards/platinum-card (scroll down to "Earn 30,000 Membership Rewards points" heading and click on the little icon next to "Terms apply" phrase).

I've kept the Gold as it's very valuable to me even before the retention bonus (due to the extra points and Deliveroo credits that I use fully). My Platinum anniversary is coming up in a month, so will update you then on what I've done (either cancel the Platinum or keep both)

Yes, I actually used to have it: opened back in 2020 to get the switching bonus they were offering at the time, the free travel insurance and the WE Mastercard. Closed everything down after getting the Amex Platinum.

I could use the 20k points towards the annual fee by using them as statement credit. 20k in that case would take £90 off my statement. However, I wanted the points specifically as I was booking vacation for later this year. Ended up converting them to Hilton points and getting >£200 of value out of them via a combination of offers.
