I bought The Wishing Chair album when it came out because I liked the cover art. That's what you had to do where I lived, because you weren't hearing any new music on the radio or anywhere else at the time. Most of the time it was a bust when I bought albums that way, a bad gamble. But not that time! That album blew me away! It was so unique, such a ray of light, so inspiring. It remains one of favorite albums of all time, it is special, truly outstanding. I would trek anywhere after that to see Natalie and the Maniacs where ever I could. Those were the best of times, they were so good, so much fun!

A slice of Heaven...a beautiful vision of a young woman and a tight amazing band making ethereal music that stills haunts me. They were better together. I know its time to move on but i get so nostalgic seeing this. God bless the Maniacs-then and now.

How many time in a row did I listen to “Jenny Jenny you don’t know”… over and over and over. I was listening to forms of Yacht Rock.. Hall and Oates/Billy Joel/Carpenters etc….. then this BAND showed up in my life on a random day… just a complexly random day…. Things were never the same again… AND I mean NEVER the same again. Thank god I discover this music and joy filled my heart for my entire lifetime…

Their music shook my world! I went from listening to bubble gum pop to appreciating music as an art form the day I purchased "Hope Chest" on a whim. Unfortunately, this was in late 1993 and Natalie had already left and with Rob Buck's passing I'll never get to see them perform in this capacity. Thanks for posting this video! It kinda helps to fill the void.

‘The Wishing Chair’ is, in my opinion, the best 10,000 Maniacs album, even though I first heard them with ‘In My Tribe’ (also a great record), so this footage is an absolute treat!

@@thomasallen7359 I think he was working with Mary Ramsey, who eventually became the lead singer of 10000 Maniacs. They were simply called John and Mary. I think he simply chose to work with her over 10000 Maniacs.

@@indiglo1971 john was just frustrated creatively. he helped write an entire albums worth of songs which the record label promptly dropped and he was just done. john and mary didnt really become a thing until 88 or 89

Had the pleasure to be at Fredonia when the Maniacs first formed in the 70's and regularly played to a 75 person "packed house" at BJ's. What a wonderfully gifted group of musicians who created so much quality and uniquely styled music. Timeless and so dear to my heart. ♥

+MaxPaws The Maniacs didn't form until the 80's. They started around '81 as Still Life with Teri Buck doing lead vocals. Then Natalie joined and eventually they became 10,000 maniacs.

Saw them at a dive bar in Fredonia around this time- it was awesome. Hypnotized by the fantastic musicians and the atmosphere they created, and mesmerized by Natalie's voice and dancing. Thanks for the post and my buddy from Silver Creek that turned me on to them. A great band- I get the chills watching this. Funny how the qualities that attract people to a band change once they get some popularity. To me the albums before Blind Man's Zoo meant the most and appealed the most to me.

Wow. I saw them that fall at The Haunt in Ithaca. I was smitten. Listened to The Wishing Chair every day for a year.

I had just graduated high school, thank God, just before this period. Was made aware of the band from WNYU and WFDU FM radio, and some article in a national magazine that profiled the band in 1985. Saw the Maniacs many many times from 1985 onwards. Saw them at a crucial In My Tribe tour show on a freezing cold evening (Dec. 18) in 1987 at Oyster Bay, Long Island, with my girlfriend Jennifer, at the time, at the long-shuttered bar Rumrunners/Heartbeat there. I had my standard Cotler black dress pants on, khaki collared dress shirt (attempting a Jeffrey Blue Velvet look) and my fabulous bolo tie, what else? A truly horrible band, Tale of Two, using a cheezy drum machine, opened. The Maniacs show was great. Met a guy during the show who later sent me a tape of the original Maniacs EPs and LP, which I didn't own as yet, then. Tiny stage with an open sunken pit dance floor. First time I saw them was opening for The Cure at Jones Beach L.I., in '85. It was hot as fuck that day, I recall Nat dousing herself and the whole front row with a huge bucket of cold water. The Cure were fucking amazing later that night, as well. I just wish someone had videotaped those shows too, then again, maybe someone did. A few of us caught the Hope Chest Tour show at the Beacon Theater in NYC in 1990, mainly for charity, if memory serves. It was great to see the band do all the early material.

Been binging 10k Maniacs live shows today and noticed something I thought was funny. You ever notice Natalie goes over and dances a bit with the bass player (sorry dude, forgot you're name) but whenever she goes over to Buck it's like "Go away little girl, I'm playin' my guitar." Just thought it was funny. This band got me through rough stuff in my first year of college, pretty much always love 'em.

Antonio Torres In 1987 the two bands toured together was lucky enough to see that great double bill ! At that time both bands were at the peak of their powers (Life's rich Pageant era REM and "in my tribe " era 10,000 Maniacs.

I'm only just now hearing the pre-In My Tribe 10,000 Maniacs, and I was late in hearing the In My Tribe Maniacs. You think about alternative music in 1985. In my case, if it wasn't on MTV then I didn't hear it. So, think about "Scorpio Rising" or "She Sells Sanctuary" by The Cult or "How Soon Is Now?" by The Smiths or "I Don't Wanna" by The Call. All from 1985 but I didn't hear them until several years later when the bands themselves became mainstream.

I'd say they were well past their way up when Natalie left. They were everywhere in 1993 and at their peak of popularity. I'd surmise that Natalie's solo career is a fairly good indication of what would have happened had Natalie been content with staying for a record or 2 more.
