I think the 1989 tour was the absolute zenith of 10,000 Manics. They played most of the "in my tribe" tracks which I think is the band's best album. Natalie used to play "Verdi Cries" as the final encore a fabulous ending .

Thank you for this post What an absolute treasure this concert footage is. Incredibly well shot and crystal clear. I had forgotten how amazing the 10,000 Manics were back in the late 80s and early 90s. The song selections here are among their best; sweet sad stories of powerful importance. Merchants vocals are powerful and clear and her stagecraft superb. Her dervish dancing mixed with quiet moments sitting on the lip of the stage are a perfect combination. I saw many of those Manic performances when they played in the northeast, each and every one a fantastic event. Those first four Maniac records are classic. Merchants’ solo efforts pale compared to her artistry displayed her and her work with the group. How I wish they had stayed together longer. I think it was Robert Buck’s dazzling guitar playing that really wove the musical alchemy that made these songs pure spun gold. Wow, how I miss them.

Natalie was so lucky to have had such a great band to get started with, especially coming from such a tiny town, Jamestown, NY. All knew her greatness and need for sovereignty to fly on her own was too great to stay with the band forever. I'm grateful to know she left 10,000 Maniacs properly, with a one album, one tour advance notice. Her first solo album, Tigerlily, is still one of my all time greats.

I saw them when they first came to the UK in a room ( I can't really call it anything but that) over a shop in Brixton. She broke down in tears pretty much on the second song and spent most of the gig either at the back of the room facing the wall shaking or occasionally singing. Mind you the audience was pretty much me and a mate Id dragged along so I could sympathise

Absolutely the greatest singer/songwriter ever! Saw her at the Rhinecliff Hotel, a place I used to play with my local bands, totally run down dump, but she was there while she was recording Tigerlily at Bearsville Studios outside of Woodstock.
@keithbate94059 жыл бұрын
Michael Mooney I was a huge 10K maniacs back in the early 1980's but she is not the greatest singer/songwriter ever. Not even the greatest female singer/songwriter,. I also think she would deny that claim herself and it would not just be modesty saying that. For the record I saw 10K Maniacs many times in the 1980's and have seen NM solo a couple of times too as well as buying all the records in the first week of release.
@michaelmooney93349 жыл бұрын

Michael Mooney Good answer ! I guessed that and many did.. She is one of the greatest ever (for sure)
@portcullis56229 жыл бұрын
+Keith Bate Surely it is such a subjective thing that it is impossible to judge who is the "greatest" singer-songwriter ever. It is a personal thing and has nothing whatsoever to do with record sales, "Halls of Fame" or mass market appeal. There are many great artists that have not been commercially successful and many mediocre, relatively talentless singers and songwriters that have sold millions. Happily, it is not a competition and if Michael Mooney feels that Natalie Merchant is the greatest female singer-songwriter, then she is-to him at least, and that is all that really matters. I (almost) agree with him. I consider her to be my favourite living female singer-songwriter, but the late Sandy Denny had a voice, and the songs, to move me more than any other. Admittedly Natalie Merchant has been writing quality songs for three decades while Sandy Denny's recording career was not much more than a decade long, but she packed a lot into those years and, as I said earlier, it's not a competition so I can enjoy both. At the same time, it is worth listening out for 'new' (previously unheard) quality singers as they are definitely out there, but are very unlikely to be heard on television or radio. For example, when I travelled to London last year to see Natalie Merchant sing live for the first time (as part of the Nonesuch Records 50th anniversary concert), I 'discovered' the wonderful Rhiannon Giddens who was on the same bill. I went back to London a few weeks ago to see Rhiannon on her recent tour, and the support act was a young singer-songwriter called Eliza Shaddad and she was excellent-and so it goes on. . . .
@keithbate94059 жыл бұрын
+Portcullis Of course I agree with most of your post. If Michael had said that Natalie was his "personal favourite" I would not have replied . But to say that "she is the greatest" is something different. Of course all art is subjective. But funnily enough your own post gives an inkling into why people say some one is the" best ever". It is to do with "sympathy" . With regard to Sandy Dennis funnily enough I was at a friends house yesterday and he was playing Fairpoint Convention. I had not heard them for a number of years and I had almost forgotten how good she was and also the band. My friend is a few years older than me and was fortunate to see them live with Sandy Dennis in the band. Of course it is self evident that you cannot judge Quality by the yard stick of sales alone. But I do think that "the test of time " is something that gives a better indication of real quality. The music of the Beatles' seems to appeal to all generations whilst other artists ' of the 1960's who were very popular at the time are now largely forgotten (except by the ageing original fans) I agree with you that music is constantly reinventing itself and new talents emerge . I have been to over 1000 gigs since the early 1970's and still enjoy modern music and the emergence of wonderful new artists' : I do not live in the past as sadly many of my generation do. I find it even worse though when young people say that music "was better in the past" Some new artists will no doubt go on to commercial or critical success and others will (sadly not) . I have tickets for a new UK artist whose debut album is out later this month = Rhodes . In the USA the 15yo "wunderkind" Grace Vardell is surely heading for huge future success. But who knows . IMO nuff said !

For anyone fortunate enough to attend a Maniacs concert the immediate observation was that from the first chord of the first song literally no one was sitting. Their shows could represent popular music on earth to other planets. Natalie’s latest Keep Your Courage is excellent and looking at some of the videos from her current tour one can’t help but marvel at the audience literally going batshit when she launches into These Are Days. Even Natalie herself seemed to be taken aback by the crowd’s reaction (think Beatles concerts). Clearly from this excellent concert Natalie has a treasure trove of fantastic songs to consider playing one can only hope that she pulls more of these gems into her future already marvelous shows.

Thank you so much for posting this! I've been looking for the companion piece to the main show for quite some time. I'm glad I finally found it. Don't know why I haven't run into it before? But I knew very little about them at the time except where they were from and that they were a bit of an underground darling, I thought they were a perfect opening act for the dead. Slightly contrasting style, of course everybody had a contrasting style to the most unique live band in history...... The sound is fantastic for an opening act, her voice is so unique and rich, it just invites you along for the ride. I knew nothing about them and I thought they were excellent whereas that same year I went to Syracuse to see the rolling Stones reunion tour steel wheels, and living color opened up and at that point Vernon Reed was the hottest guitarist in the country and they were literally the worst opening act I've ever seen. And I think a lot of it was because the stones don't let you f*** with the soundboard even the tiniest bit but still man they were just terrible whereas these guys who I barely knew were a joy.

Howard Stern once said that the musicians playing behind the lead singer in The Fine Young Cannibals had been “hit by the ugly stick repeatedly.” (Howard should know because he’s hardly Brad Pitt himself.) Anyway, Stern pointed out that regardless of how ugly you were, as long as you were strumming on an electric guitar, that many women would find you to be attractive and interesting. Perhaps “The King of all Media,” was on to something there? The late Robert Buck was a superb guitarist. He died much too young. Actually, Mr. Buck looked like a guy you went to high school with. Maybe he could have dressed in black and worn Ray Ban sunglasses like the late, great Roy Orbison did to give him a more theatrical look? Requiem aeternam, Mr. Buck.

My college roommate and friend was Jerry's(the Maniacs' drummer) younger brother. We went to many of their shows and were at this concert. We only went to see the Maniacs as we weren't Dead fans at all. We went back stage before the concert, as we usually did. We had a few beers, mingled and even met the Dead- which unfortunately meant nothing to us. After the Maniacs set we left the stadium but on the way out I stopped in the bathroom. Some drunk /stoned dude noticed the backstage pass I had on me and asked how I got it. I took it off and hooked it onto his shirt. He pretty much lost it and hugged me and kept thanking me. I doubt he made it back stage though, as your name had to be on a list supplied by the bands or their people. Fun memory.

Thanks for the upload.Nice to see them playing live from the time of 'Blind Man's Zoo'.Worth watching for the giant 'This Happy Puppet' alone!Made me laugh-and some people say that Natalie Merchant lacks a sense of humour!

There are a couple of decent quality bootleg CDs from the late 1980s around. I found them on Ebay ('In My Tribe' era).

i miss Natalie's singing voice sounding like this

You can still listen to her. She still sounds great with grey hair.

Hopefully, Jan Padillo is merely referring to how her voice has changed. She still has a great voice, but it is deeper now (most voices change with age).

I agree. She sounded way better back in the late 80s and early 90s. Her voice changed after the late 90s

What about Steve’s crokies for his sunglasses? 😂 Never seen a rock star perform live with crokies. Lol

@@kimbergbi1 Crikies, i had no idea what croakies were. Now i gotta watch this whole concert again...it's quite moreish. "Search for Jehovah while he may yet be found." - Isaiah. He's probably not found in the counterfeit churches that took his name out of their bibles. Jah is bringing this system to it's bitter end in favor of his own Kingdom of Christ and the 144,000.
