One of Philadelphia's all-time greatest sports moments: October 4, 1980 vs. Montreal Expos in Montreal.

Rogers used to be a Phillies nemesis. Mike Schmidt hit a massive home run shot in this game to left that no one ever thought about or attempted to measure it’s distance.

Despite the result, this was still one of the most entertaining and surreal ballgames in Expos history. I can remember eating a mouthful of chocolate cake and holding my breath as Fryman’s pitch came in to Bob Boone; then spitting it back out at the TV screen when he smacked it up the middle. Dawson Carter Cromartie and Parrish, were a combined 2-19 with 1 walk. White and Scott carried the load for 'Nos Amours'. Phillies handed the Expos the game with 5 big errors, but to no avail... then Bahnsen tosses 2-0 cookie to a guy with 47 homeruns... wtf?

When a team is competitive enough to at least battle for a playoff spot or reaches it, there are always the Jerry White or Wallace Johnson to step up, not always the star players, some of them having problem to keep the same level of excellence during the playoffs agains better pitching and defence.

Mike Schmidt = All time Expos killer. Every single time we played the Phillies he did something to beat us.

Yes, I got the impression that he hit all of his home runs against the Expos.

I sure enjoyed watching Steve Rogers pitch back in the day, seems he was always around the plate and kept his team in the game. Thanks, these games are great to watch.

Patch Adams he should've won the 82 cy young

+Expos Classics Well you could have an argument, but I choose not too. Off course Cartlon won huge over the 2nd place finisher Rogers in the 1982 Cy Young voting, although Era wise, Cartlon's was 3.10, and Rogers 2.40. I think Carlton won over 20 games, but maybe Rogers has a few more positives over Carlton. Let the debate begin!
@warrenl68637 жыл бұрын
Expos Classics - He won 19 games but the Expos fell out of the race early in 82. He needed to win 20 games to get the votes needed and couldn't do it.
@patchadams14737 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but Cartlon still won 23 Games, but who knows what might have been.

He was frustrating to watch, because he always seemed to come up just short when most needed.

So long ago... The Schmidt blast will never be forgotten, but forgotten a little bit is the 2-out single by Bob Boone in the top of the 9th to tie the game. And McBride almost fell rounding third. All these little things... what a game.

And the Expos had the potential tying run on third base with 2 out in the 10th. Andre Dawson, who rolled up big numbers in lopsided wins, did what he did so often in clutch situations--he struck out.

If you look closely at the top of the 11th, Schmidt was at the plate with Rose on 1st. Here's why I bring it up: Don McCormack, who never had an ML at-bat, was on deck. You couldn't pinch-hit for McCormack, because Boone and Moreland were out of the game after being pulled for pinch-runners. Therefore, the Expos couldve--and should have--walked Schmidt and take your chances with the rookie or another pinch-hitter. Rule of thumbL don't let Schmidt beat you. A bad 2-0 fastball, and c'est la vie for the year.
@ExposClassics947 жыл бұрын
NFL-MLB Classics oh yeah I had forgot that McCormack was on deck, and yeah I agree, if I had to pitch to Schmidt, he woudent see a single fastball

The last weekend of the season. I believe this was the Saturday game after the Phillies had won on Friday night. Schmidt was an Expos killer. Every single time he was up something bad happened. In 1979 we were so close. Here in 1980 again we were so close.
@shawnfitzgerald8187 жыл бұрын
I read Gary Carter's book, he had sleepless nights after this game, apparently he wanted Bahnsen to throw breaking ball 2-0 but Bahnsen wanted to throw fastball. I remember Boone's two-out single in the ninth that got them there. 1979-1981 were tough to swallow, so close..

Rowland office definitely should be on the all name team of the last 50 years .

Why not add--and this can be I suppose a tough one for you--the first-ever Expos games played at Shea Stadium against the Mets (not yet World Series champions) on April 8, 1969 followed by the game on April 14 of the same year in Montreal against the St. Louis Cardinals (first game ever in Canada, I remember!) I hope you can if it can be done--now that would certainly be put on both Facebook and Pinterest! I do like your videos you have on your page!
