Rookie Big Unit! This is awesome! They had no idea what he was gonna accomplish over his great and long career.

I watched Johnson's last start and last appearance for the Expos in Atlanta in 1989. It was a bases-loaded triple from Braves' pitcher Pete Smith that beat him. Johnson was gone by the 5th inning and was traded two weeks later.

Awesome! What a great way to get in the atmosphere of a new MLB season.

Watching randy pitch here.....and hearing that his fastball is 92 to 94...and pitches like a little guy...are all stark contrasts to who he became after this......

You can tell he doesn't have full confidence in his stuff yet. He was pitching very carefully.

I'm guessing it was because he was super wild in the minor leagues, so the obvious answer seemed like it was to be more careful, when the solution was to grip it and rip it. Altho, it all truly changed when Nolan Ryan and his pitching coach told him to land on his foot differently.

He shows flashes of the slider. You can tell he's not ripping it.

I wonder if Johnson stayed in Montreal if it would have been the Mariners who moved?
@ShmuelWeintraub6 жыл бұрын
The bigger problem was that the guy the Expos traded for (Langston) told them he wouldn't sign in Montreal but management went through with the deal anyway. So the Expos unloaded Johnson, Brian Holman and Gene Harris (?) to get Langston for a less than a full season (as I recall, it was a May or June deal). He signed with California the following winter. And about a decade later they traded Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips and Grady Sizemore to Cleveland for another pitcher who told them outright he wouldn't sign in Montreal - Bartolo Colon. In between these two management disasters, they drafted very poorly (and they had lots of picks thanks to the number of free agents they let sign elsewhere to save money...).

Wow you could see the makings of that devastating slider.And man was he tall.Sometimes its not as apparent from a distance but that centerfold camera was up and close.I loved Mr. Kalas and Mr. Ashburn. I love how they reserve judgment about the potential of Randy Johnson. They just called what they saw at the time.Typical Working-class type announcers.Perfect for Philly. Show me watcha got.Poor Montreal. So many future hall of famers and other great players came up through that organization. Great scouting but God awful upper management. The one chance where they were favored to win it all was 1994.And that season was cut short because of the strike.So many what ifs had they won the world series.

In a way, I could see the Expos reasoning. 6'10 pitchers were unprecedented, who knew about injuries, etc.. Also, he was 26 and still an unfinished product. Not many 26 year olds pitchers with a 6+ ERA become 300 game winners. Even in Seattle it took him a minute to eventually become the beast he became.
