The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde read this the summer before senior year in high school. very well written, parts of it were spooky, in full daylight, ridiing in car with my parents. so glad I didn't see the movie first. Highly recommended I'm writing as an American, English native language. Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen Haven't read any of her books but want to. The parts I have read were very good. Jane Eyre - Charlotte Brontë this was a joy to read. highly recommended. Wuthering Heights - Emily Brontë I only stayed with this book out of respect for the Bronte sisters. only one sane person in the whole book and that was the narrator. glad I didn't read this in school. so many characters who I would not like to meet, ever. I will watch the old movie some time to find out what happened. bad people. if you've read a few chapters and want to quit, quitting is recommended.

Dear Emi, first of all congrats on your thesis! And this video is great! I'm so struck by the fact that ALL the books are not only my favourites but I also read them at the same age when you read them! All Agatha Christie plots mixed-up, The Catcher in the Rye, Wilde!! And the Great Gatsby (+the film starring Robert Redford an Mia Farrow), Little Women, and all the rest of true clasissics! And it was all in the 1980s when I first read them... I am amazed that so many years later, in a different part of the world, there is the same reaction to the same set of books! I'm looking forward to more videos, do keep up the good work! And all the best in the New Year!

Agatha Christie!!! I had the same phase - I read a ton of her books in 6th and 7th grade, and now can only remember bits and pieces of them. Congrats on finishing your thesis!

Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Old Man and the Sea, The Grapes of Wrath, and more recently, All the Pretty Horses......these are also great books. Congratulations on finishing your paper. What will you do now? What job will you be able to get with your degree? Will you continue your education and become a college professor?

Hello. The classic books of Russian authors are also very beautiful. I think Dostoyevski and Tolstoy are number one.I remember reading a book by Agatha Christie until I finished it. I was very excited. Thank you for this beautiful video and for the books you recommend. See you.

I’ve never really read Russian classics since they always intimidated me, but I really should try! haha Thanks for the sweet comment!🤍

@@emigraceDostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment is not daunting at all. Plus it seems to me sort of the mother of all detective/mystery novels so if you’re into Agatha Christie you may like it.

this is such a great video :) I am curious to hear about how you became interested in English lit and what brought you to major in it?
@emigrace2 жыл бұрын
I read a lot of classic English/American books translated into Japanese when I was little, like Little Women and Pride and Prejudice, etc. because my mom would give them to me, and I grew up loving them:) and also, I had 'advanced' English classes in high school where we studied books like To Kill a Mockingbird and Lord of the Flies, and I loved those classes so much that I made it my major :)

Thanks for your videos. I recommend you a French/Belgian writer : Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt. His book "Oscar et la dame rose" could make you cry. It's a very popular book in France

great video :) I'd also recommand "To Kill a Mockingbird" - it's about racism in the united states of the old days, can be kinda harsh but a great story and also "They Were All My Sons" - well, this one is actually a script for a play and not a book so it's written kind of differently but it's also touching some important topics

Hola, ¿Cómo va todo? I highly recommend you the best Russian novel 巨匠とマルガリータ by ブルガーコフ(no sé si has leído antes esta obra maestra).

Graciasss!
