Same here except I originally ripped all of my hard media several years back, then from that point on only bought music a la carte online in mp3 format. Yeah shuffle play is great (also shuffle play by Genre) - and creating custom playlists (I've got about 300 or so) of 'related' music. Could be shared musicians, similar vibe, etc.

Personally speaking the main thing I noticed over time is getting almost totally away from 'shred' style music - which I was somewhat into when it first appeared (like Cacophony, Racer X). Other than that I pretty much still like what I used to like. What's changed is due to the internet I've been able to discover SO MUCH MORE like-sounding music (especially from the 70's & 60's, but other decades as well) that has dramatically expanded my music database

Couldn’t Get it Right is a great track. That’s one of the reasons I’m streaming Qobuz more than ever now. It’s so easy to play one song from an album and then jump to another with a swipe. I’ve been listening to the Pete Townshend live box set with 14 discs. All available online. I love Pete and The Who. Rock on Phil and happy Christmas!

Dear Phil, Enjoyong your videos. Love the reference to Climax Blues Band, that brought back a lot of memories. Here's what I do, maybe you could try this. In lockdown I started a spreadsheet of my favourite songs, with the reasons why I liked them. These are not necessarily the best tunes musically but the ones that connect to me emotionally the most, right back to my childhood. I added songs as I heard them on the radio or on youtube as the time went on, some long forgotten. I now have over 200 and it's like the soundtrack to my life. You wold be amazed at the content of your own list if you do this, it's not what you would expect at all! Best wishes, Paul

Great upload, and you are so right, that new Opeth album is incredible! Freddie King is a great bluesman! Great taste Phil. Here’s 10 (a fair few more, lol) I’m mainly playing, via cd: The Rolling Stones-Hot Rocks 1964-1971 Blackfoot-Marauder Joe Bonamassa-Sloe Gin Def Leppard-High & Dry Groundhogs-Blues Obituary Cream-Disraeli Gears Picture-Diamond Dreamer Black Sabbath-Eternal Idol Metallica-Master of Puppets Uriah Heep-…very ‘eavy… very ‘umble Funny you should mention Opeth and Lisa Gerard. I’ve also been listening to the Last Will and Testament on repeat, an incredible album, I’m a big fan of theirs anyway. Love the This Mortal Coil album It’ll End In Tears, Lisa Gerrad has a beautiful haunting vocals. Love a bit of Kiss, Creatures of the night is a great album, but my fave is Destroyer. Best wishes 🫡

@wolf1977. Don’t know if I’m preaching to the converted here. Have you heard the Little Feat bootleg “Electrif Lycanthrope”? It’s a live recording of Lowell and the newly formed six - piece line up of the band from 1974. Apparently LF were recorded for a radio broadcast and the engineer taped the show. And there’s a story that Lowell himself “mixed/tweaked” the final mix of the tapes. There is a 12 minute + medley of “Spanish Moon/Skin It Back/Fat Man In The Bathtub” that shows Lowell and the boys at their absolute best - surpassing any versions on “Waiting For Columbus”. Stay safe and well.

@@markmiwurdz2248 I have, particularly liked "Medley (Spanish Moon; Skin It Back; Fat Man In The Bathtub)". Actually that's the only track I ended up downloading from that particular set as I already owned so much other live LF (and as a rule I don't 'stockpile' different live versions of the same track). It is vintage (1974) Feat for sure, just a year after their Transmission Impossible set was recorded

CHANGES ONE & CHANGES TWO (mid-'70s) are both fantastic albums if you're looking to check out Mingus. Great 5-tet, compositions, playing, mix...very accessible, thought provoking Jazz, even for a noob.

Hi Phil Ah music... incredible how it grabs us. I loved your video.... I experienced something similar.... at one point I only listened to Thin Lizzy hit singles and not the full album. However I am now a complete Lizzy maniac... love every note... I always thought that Phil Lynott is a genius... but now I need to listen to every note... need to get all their albums and reissues. Hello Phil, I've recently played. King's X - "Dogman" Taproot - "Gift" Mad Season - "Above" I'm still getting into King's X, but I love the "Dogman" album. A lot of great heavy riffs on there. Taproot are a band from the early 2000's that were categorized in the Alt/Nu Metal genre. Not sure if you would like their album ""Gift" but I'll recommend it to you anyway. I do recommend and think you would like "Above" by Mad Season. It was their only album, and it features Layne Staley from Alice In Chains, and Mike McCready from Pearl Jam on guitar as well as some other players from the Seattle scene of the early 90's. It sounds nothing like AIC or Pearl Jam but it is a very dark but beautiful album at the same time. Also, pretty bluesy in spots. Highly recommend it to you Phil. Looking forward to the future videos. - Dylan

Hi Phil, love your show. Always find something to have a listen to and this show is no different. Especially Deccan Traps, very interesting indeed. As I mentioned the Climax Blues Band in the post below, I had to play A Lot of Bottle, as I haven't played it for a while, which lead me to Chicago Transit Authority and the 50th Anniversary remix of their 1st album. I did feel something missing from the remix compared to the original, which I still have, (1969) I bought in 1970. On playing the 1st track of the remix, "Introduction", sounded very tinny and lacked that beautiful bass depth in this song. So I played the original album on KZbin Music and also my original album on vinyl, where that beautiful rich bass sound was still there. I thought that was a sadness but there you go. One mans meat etc. Thanks for a great show Phil. Keep on Spinning. (by the way, I am a Londoner now living in NZ and most of the music (Vinyl & CD) I have I bought in the UK). Cheers mate.

Been playing a great Irish band, The Coronas, massive in Ireland, little known in UK, so impressed seeing in London next year. Reissue from 1985, Jett Black with Nightflight, classic melodic rock. Still playing Nothing But Thieves on rotation, Phil please try and discover these, plus another great UK band, called LEAP, recommend their song Vision Of Us and Exit Signs

'New' plays for me: Jethro Tull Christmas Album (2003) - deluxe 4 disk version Ronni Le Tekro/Bigfoot TV (2022) Torben Enevoldsen/Transition (2022) Tan Sleeve/several 2000's albums - power pop Eve 6/ditto (many fairly recent albums) - catchy ALT Tribe/Tribal Bumpin' (1975) - 70's Funk Terje Rypdal & Ronni Le Tekrø/Rypdal & Tekrø (1994) - smokin' fusion Mike Cooper/early 70's albums (Places I Know/Trout Steel/Machine Gun Co) - good Folk/Rock Neal Morse/Late Bloomer - just came out, really good (and secular/not 'preachy') Spiraling/Transmitter (2002) - great power pop, same with The Junior League/Catchy (2006) Kara's Flowers/The Fourth World (1997) - ditto Roger Bunn/Piece Of Mind - 1969 prog Blue By Natures/Blues Is In My Way (1994) - great female singer Karen Lawrence (LA Jets/1994) The Numbers/Numerology 1979-1982 - some of the better New Wave around Mason (UK)/Starting As We Mean To Go On (1973) - solid early 70's rock. No albums to speak of, this is a compilation BTW don't tell Pete over at SoT that you don't always play records all the way through, or that you like 'shuffle play' (I do too - use it ALL the time)...😎"The Death Metal Growl is back"? No thanks! Didn't particularly get into the new Sweet/Full Circle album to the extent of it making my best 2024 albums list but it's OK. "Don't Bring Me Water", "Destination Hannover" & "Changes" are good, "Burning Like A Falling Star" is OK. Anyone expecting Glam will be disappointed - this is 'straight-up' rock/kinda AOR in many spots. That AOR is competent but not really anything groundbreaking. The whole album's posted to YT...That Little Feat box is excellent! Great band...Never got into Kiss except for a literal handful of hits

This week, I are bin mossly lisnen to (a trawl through the collection, rather than new stuff): UFO - Covenant (2000) - I'd forgotten how good this album actually is, it's just a shame Aynsley Dunbar's drumming feels a bit flat compared to Andy Parker's. Tom Robinson Band - Power In The Darkness (1978) - not played it for far too long, great album. The Dickies - Dogs From The Hare That Bit Us (1998) - including the truly awesome punked-up version of Uriah Heep's "Easy Livin'". The Pirates - Skull Wars Plus (1999) - can't beat a bit of British pub rock 'n' roll, Johnny B. Goode's definitely good! Fuhrs And Frohling - Ammerland (1978) - an absolutely beautiful piece of instrumental prog rock from Germany. Rose Tattoo - Blood Brothers (2007) - I think this is an absolutely stunning album that easily rivals their first four - "Black Eyed Bruiser", "Slipping Away" and "Man About Town", what more can I say? Clear Blue Sky - Don't Mention Rock 'n' Roll - this album is so out of print now but guitarist, vocalist and founder member John Simms is just an amazing artist and songwriter. The Toy Dolls - Dig That Groove Baby (1983) - the album with "Nellie The Elephant" on it, what more can I say? Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Eve And Other Stories (1996) - a huge Savatage fan anyway, this stuff they do is just mind-blowing, I'd love to see a live show of them. Slade - Crackers, The Rockin' Party Album (1985) - you've just got to dig it out once a year, haven't you?

Hello I have a cold and I've been listening mostly to jazz. It would be nice to know what people listen to when they're sick

The mingus a-hum ( my birthyear ) sits also in the perfect Jazzcollection 25 albums boxset nr 2. Kevin Ayers : have a 5 original album set. ( first albums ) The Sweet : my number one band when I was a teenager . Tried the last one , but found it a bit too much AOR. Thick a brick : have the Ultradisk 24kt gold from Mobile Fidelity sound lab.

Agreed about that new Sweet album being AOR (still not bad)

Most of us listen to Kiss when we're kids but then we grow up, get more mature, throw our Kiss records away & start listening to proper rock music instead. You, Phil, have done that the other way around, mate!! Maybe Father Time is catching up with you; do you find yourself forgetting a lot of things recently, Phil? Such as your name? Where you live? Where you parked your car? Stuff like that? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Best regards

Are you talking about the Opeth album? Opeth are barely death metal, and death metal purists would totally reject them. They're a progressive rock/progressive metal band at heart. You have to view the growled vocals as being like another aspect of the instrumentation, like distortion on a guitar. If you think of death metal, and you are thinking of something like Cannibal Corpse- it's a million miles away from that, honestly. Opeth are totally unique and do their own thing.

@@jimmycampbell78 I also struggle with death metal though I picked up Opeth's "Damnation" album after Steven Wilson recommended it in an interview about the Porcupine Tree album "In Absentia" back in 2003. It's a great album, but for me it's great because it isn't death metal - I haven't ventured beyond it into Opeth's other stuff yet. Another album I think is really great for NOT being death metal is Blood Incantation's "Timewave Zero" album.
