*CORRECTION:* The theatrical cut of *1408* did NOT end with death--he lived and he and his wife reunited. That was the best ending by far, not because it was happy, but because the other endings were boring--so standard and expected like stock photos. You see the scares coming, so cheap and cheesy. In the theatrical end, you're like "ah, happiness after all that misery," so you *never expect them* to then have this *incredibly chilling moment.* You see on his wife's face, since a mother KNOWS her little girl's voice, that she recognizes the sound. It's both uplifting and dark, as they're brought together, but forever disturbed. Never seen an ending like that one. The cheap, shitty scare endings were weak, but the theatrical was *amazing.*

Kirby 149-That was the ending my dad & I saw when we saw 1408 in the movie theatre as well and i actually like that ending best, it's just so creepy when the wife overhears him listening to the tape & hears their daughters voice. I had no idea about the alternative endings so I was pretty taken aback when I saw the ending were he dies and you see his spirit in the burnt out room when i later rewatched the movie on dvd.

There was an alternate ending for the movie "I am Legend " with Will Smith. In the ending I saw here in America, Will Smith blows himself up along with the mutated creatures. Before doing so, he gives the cure to the woman and boy who saved him the previous day that he founded by capturing the "mutant girlfriend" (which was implied in this movie ending) of the leader and injecting an antidote, causing her to slowly return human. He shoves them in a hidden spot in the wall with the cure before the explosion, saving them and they drive off safely in sunlight the next morning. In the alternative ending people may have seen in a different country, Will stays alive by giving the mutant creature his "daughter" back to the mutant leader that he had captured to perform the testing on. The mutants then leave, satisfied with the return of one of their own. Will then drives off with both the woman and the boy to the safety of a guarded encampment where he will share the cure to save humanity.

One alternate ending that I feel most people saw, but I still wish had been canon: I Am Legend. The “heroic sacrifice” was impulsive and unnecessary, and I really loved the inversion of his character as akin to a serial killer rather than a benevolent researcher (compounded by the shot of all of his “victims” pinned up in the background) as well as the obvious hierarchy of the vampire horde as the Alpha subdued the rest in order to allow Robert to return his mate to him safely. It provided SUCH a beautifully cathartic ending, and I have no idea why they reverted to “protagonist blows everyone up” as their official release.

The only way the Get Out original ending would have made sense is if the cop was in on it all along. I mean, who exactly called the cops? Not only that, but forensic evidence would reveal that the "grandpa" shot the girl and then turned the gun on himself. haven't watched I am Legend in a while, so can't remember which was the theatrical ending and which was the deleted scene. I liked the version where Smith's character survived though. there were obvious hints that if he just let the test subject go he would have been fine, but the explosion ending just leaves all the foreshadowing unresolved.

I had an extended edition box set, directors cut, European versions of the Dawn of the Dead DVD that had four different cuts and a number of cut scenes and I'm pretty sure at least one of them had the helicopter suicide ending

I totally expected the alternate ending to Get Out, so I am happy they subverted expectations by giving him a "happier" ending.

Agreed. It's irritating how often bummer "twist" endings in horror movies are just exactly what you expect. For a while, just having a remotely decent ending in a horror movie was a twist because every writer thought it was clever to pull some kind of bullshit at the end or just have the most likely scenario play out, no matter how pointless it makes the whole story.

Have you seen Hide and Seek? Great twist ending I never expected. Also the end of Descent 2 was a shocking WTF moment I didnt see coming, but in my opinion the best part of Descent 1 and 2 was after I had seen them both getting the spoiler that those things were lurking all around in and out of the shadows and I didnt even realize it until after i watched a spoiler alert later. I rewatched and my eyes were glued to the background the whole time. Lol.
