The SEGA SG-1000 like the Famicom was also based on the Colecovision. In fact it was so similar internally it was pretty much a clone lol

Supposedly Sega considered adopting the MSX standard, like Spectravideo and Coleco in the U.S. but it was taking too long to finalise and as it only used off the shelf parts anyway they just copied it and did their own thing.

I know I make this comment a lot on your videos, but I really think de-emphasizing the computer aspect of the Famicom to rebrand it as the NES was a missed opportunity. As you've mentioned before, the home computer market was relatively unaffected by the video game crash, so there probably wouldn't have been much of a risk to Nintendo to market themselves as a child-friendly toy computer with optional modem and keyboard peripherals available. Think of what a boon to the homebrew scene it would have been had Famicom Basic been released for North American or European markets. Or, at the very least, how great it would have been able to have played the FDS versions of Zelda or Metroid instead of the muted cartridge versions that were released outside of Japan. It probably couldn't have competed directly with Commodore or Atari in the micro market, but it wouldn't have had to. It could have been an inexpensive way to introduce children to the larger world of computing.

Would love to see an aftermarket version of the FDS. Two forms can be available, one just for the NES expansion port and the other would be compatible with both the original and top loader.

Nintendo said that the Family Computer and its coloration looked too toy-like so they redesigned it to look like a piece of hi-tech Japanese consumer electronics (VCR-like). To then market it as a toy seems contradictory. I reconcile this by pointing out that they still needed toy stores to carry it so they positioned it as an expandable "entertainment system" and included a hi-tech Japanese wireless robot toy that interfaces with your TV (ROB) as well as a light gun game. ROB was the "toy." So the NES design was the attempt to appear less toy-like and ROB was the attempt to also be a toy in order to get their foot in the door at toy stores. ;)

I didn't say that they wanted it to look like a toy, so not sure where you got that from? I said it was marketed like a toy and looked like a VCR to fit in with the rest of your living room.

@@TheLairdsLair I'm talking about Nintendo's own internal contradiction of not wanting it to look like a toy while marketing it like a toy (typically marketing is all about how they want it to look) while wanting to market it as a piece of consumer electronics for your home entertainment/Hi-Fi setup that doesn't look like a toy. Despite the contradiction, these things are reconcilable thanks to ROB. Also, it isn't so much that they "wanted" to market it as a toy as that they needed to. They "wanted" the opposite, hence the unnecessary redesign. Despite this they still needed the toy angle to get it into toy stores who didn't want to carry new video games. Want != Need. ;) You could say they wanted it to look like a piece of AV equipment to consumers while marketing it as an hi-tech Japanese entertainment platform and billing it as a non-videogame toy for certain retailers.

Ah I see! Sorry, I obviously misunderstood that. Yes, I see your point though, it does seem a bit confused, especially when the design of the original Famicom was actually based on a toy!

@@TheLairdsLair Yep. They even stated that one reason for the superfluous eject mechanism on the FC was to give kids something to fiddle with. FC was all about bright toy-like reds and fiddly bits. :)

WoooW so if nintendo didn’t saw the colecovision and not be kmpressed about it, they may have never come with their own game console??!! BTW so nintendo opted for a 6502 chip because it contained a builtin audio chip and controller chip as well, well ahaaa no wonder that nintendo did opted for a Z80 chip because it does not have a builtin soundchip and no builtin controller chip, wich ment that if nintendo had opted for a Z80 chip then they also needed extra space on the motherboard for both a soundchip and controller chip wich also would,ve made the famicom more expensive to produce.
