I've been wanting to get into board games since before the pandemic, but I'm autistic, so interacting with new people is very difficult for me. Also, the people at the nearest game store weren't very receptive to teaching a newcomer their ways.

I've a friend who has ALL of the physical cards for Sentinels of the Multiverse, and it's gotten us all to buy the online versions as well to play remotely. We've probably played over 50 games and it hasn't even come close to getting repetitive yet. The game is SO MUCH FUN and has a surprisingly deep well of lore (????), some of which might have been more influential on modern comics than any of them might have realized!

I am so very happy you guys are doing this channel! Not only because I love board games but because of the focus on bringing new people into the hobby. So far with only a few videos this has been a great resource for me. So I work for a not for profit that provides housing and support for adults with intellectual, psychological and physical disabilities, and part of what I do is support our individuals that are trying to find work and just engage more in their community. Co Op Games are one of the big tools I have used to work with them to build social skills. I have found that 'Role Playing' social situations for many of our individuals creates just as much anxiety as the real thing, so practicing social interaction that you would use just at the super market, or at a job interview in the context of something as non-threatening as a game has been a big help to some of the individuals I work with. It's too the point where I am even working designing my own game that can be something to be a bridge the gap between theraputic focused and just plain fun to play to help encourage indivudals to play games with their families more! Anyway please please please keep up the great work, I'll be looking to this channel for inspiration and advice often!

Escape: The curse of the temple should be on this list. It's the most chaotic game I've ever played as there are no turns. It's you vs a temple and a soundtrack that gives you 10 minutes before it kills you. It's frantic constant dice rolling and trying to collect gems and hit the exit and it's so much fun. It's not a complicated game either and you can teach it to new comers pretty easily

I'm a fan of Forbidden Island too. It plays like a simplified version of Pandemic (which makes sense, same designer) but it's less intimidating for people who only know drugstore games, and it manages similar levels of tension while framing the action as a fun adventure rather than a dire cataclysm. So it's an easier sell, especially with kids. I introduced mine to it over the summer and they loved it.

Personally, one of my favorite Co-op games is the XCOM Board Game. It's super close to the source, it's just as semi random as the game and every player is an important part of the experience where not one player can take over every role. The whole game is controled by an app that gives you time limits and random events, making it adrenalin packed when what happens and leaves you just enough time to clear your own tasks. Each player has a different role (Squad Commander, Financing Officer, Communications Officer, Head of Research) and you all need to communicate with each other in this super tight time limit.

The co-op game we've played the most (by far) is The Captain Is Dead. The theme draws new players in quickly, and the rules are easy for them to pick up when an experienced player gives a tour of the ship (explaining what all the ship systems do). Then everyone chooses a character, we find out what happened just before the last commercial break, and the game begins. I enjoyed Pandemic, but we couldn't figure out how to adapt it so blind players could play. Pandemic: The Cure was easier to adapt, but The Captain Is Dead is the one that hits the table now.
@markp72623 жыл бұрын
My family likes Pandemic (though we don't own it for some reason), and we own Forbidden Island/Desert (not Sky though - yet). A nice couple of cooperative games though are newer ones that you can even play on your own. They are based on the old Choose Your Own Adventure books (literally, taken right from a couple of the books) but have added dice rolling, clues to obtain (or not) that make them into miniature RPGs. They are divided into chapters, so you can always take a break in the middle and not lose anything. Fun, and definitely have replay value.

Surprised something like Forgotten Waters didn't make this list. I got it recently and can't recommend it enough! It is set on the high seas where players take the role of pirates on board a ship, there are several great stories to choose from which unfold via your mobile AND the gameboard, there is squabbling to perform the best actions... did I mention Pirates? Plus the natural stopping point halfway through a campaign, it reminds me of a shortened D&D campaign... but with Pirates!

Wanna give an honourable mention to Hanabi, a perfectly tiny co-op game that is part infuriating and anger-inducing clusterfuck and part team-building exercise that has the incredibly novel mechanic of holding the cards in your hand, but you are looking at the backs and the faces are shown to your team mates, you give vague information to each-other trying to play your cards in the correct order to put on the best damn fireworks show you can. It's simple in concept but it has never failed to make moments that I then end up bringing up forever afterwards.

I've heard a lot of good things about Trogdor the Board Game. A simple game to complete in about a half an hour, a beer and pretzels game where everyone controls a beefy armed dragon destroying everything and killing everyone that can be killed. Three objectives: you "burninate" the countryside, those being tiles you have to flip, "burninate" the peasants to where there are none left on the board, and "burninate" all three cottages on the board. Each player is given a keeper of Trogdor which gives each player a special power they can perform on their turn, and an item of Trogdor, something that gives the player a special ability that must be recharged after each use. The game uses cards that give the player action points to move a certain number of spaces and gives them a certain perk. After the player moves, the countryside moves, these being the peasants, knights, archers, and the infamous Trog-Hammer that can move on both turns (yours and the countryside's). The movements are determined by a different deck of cards, of which peasants can sometimes repair the countryside, and everyone else always repairs the cottages. The Knights and the Trog-Hammer attack Trogdor directly, while the Archers can only hurt you from a distance. Everyone has to work together with their different abilities to destroy the countryside, but if you're hit while you're out of energy, Trogdor draws 5 of the countryside's movement cards, following the path on each one as a last-ditch effort to win the game. The Homestar Runner KZbin channel has a detailed tutorial on gameplay if you wanna learn more.

We have a fairly strict one in one out policy on our games so I currently only own two co ops. Forbidden island is from the same developer as pandemic but the game is a little more streamlined and therefore has an easier teach. I play it with my mum and dad if that's any indication to how it plays. It can easily fall into the co op trap of the most experience player being the coach though. Spirit island is a little more hardcore, but thematically wonderful and pretty. You play the spirits of an island fighting off colonizers. Its an a-symertirc game and too much is going on for one person to take over.

I'm extremely surprised none of the Forbidden series made the list. Forbidden Island is fun to play and pretty easy to learn. Forbidden Desert is even better than Forbidden Island, and has different mechanics that differentiate it from Island. In Island one of the main ways the game tries to stop you winning is the tiles that make up the board eventually sink and go away, making passage impossible. in Desert, the tiles are eventually covered in sand, burying them and making them impassable, but they can be cleared, though if too many tiles get too much sand on them and you run out of sand markers, you lose. It's quite a fun game, playable by 2-4 people.

He probably didn't want to put another Matt Leacock game on there with Pandemic in spot #1. They do all share similar mechanics as well. All great games!

I HIGHLY recommend Freedom. It is a co-op game where you are aiding escaping slaves as conductors on the Underground Railroad. You need to sometimes sacrifice some slaves in order for larger groups to escape to Canada. This game can cause TEARS, because you lagit feel dreadful when you have to sacrifice the slaves in your care. It is amazing for a game to make you so emotionally invested in the well being of non-existent people. On top of all that, it isn't a very hard game to learn. Easy to pick up and teach, hard to master.

@ishoottheyscore89704 жыл бұрын
Sentinels Of The Multiverse is such a marmite title - if you're OK with trying to track the modifiers, it's great. If not, it can be a slog. I think it's rather good, but it can fall flat with the wrong intro games (like Citizen Dawn in Atlantis which can just keep destroying how you attempt to build up a hero). Now some of those games can be fun later when you understand more about how some heroes can manipulate decks and know what some villains and environments can throw at you, but you need to play enough to get there

2 more Co-op games: Lord of the Rings LCG and Sword & Sorcery (Ares) both Immortal Souls and Ancient Chronicles. LotR LCG pits the players against a deck. They have to get through a "storyline" deck that ever evolves. S&S is a great dungeon crawl, with no "dungeon master."

As someone who is legally blind and loves board games, I’m always looking for games that can be easily accessible or that can be somehow adapted/adjusted so people with visual impairments can play as well. Co-op games are usually pretty good for this since you are usually working with a group of people who can be your eyes, although, games that use visual art as an integral mechanic, like Mysterium, don’t usually work very well.
