I find the biggest difference between the UK and American office is, I'm not sure what the American office is. It seems like a sit com with shaky camera work and some slapstick . It feels scripted. The thing is most US shows are intentionally very broad, America is such a big country with such a wide variety of people that if they don't go for the lowest common denominator they fail to get an audience and without an audience they don't get ad revenue. Being broad has the benefit that it makes it easier to translate abroad so there is less need for a remake. Many other nations tv, especially uk comedies aren't that broad so can get lost in translation which is one of the reason the US likes to remake as the original would struggle to get an audience. In addition local content all over the world performs better than foreign content but that's even more pronounced in the US. Mind you this may change, streaming services have been picking up us rights to foreign content and that's exposing more people to foreign content meaning they get more used to different styles especially in comedy and more foreign culture knowledge which will make them more and more accepting of it and perhaps that may see putting the original version on us tv may become more viable

you mentioned you wondered how the people react to the shows they enjoy getting cancelled, and it made me think of a US origional seriers "Jericho" a post apocalyptic show from around 2005 that ran one season and then got cancelled. It was actually quite popular, more so than the channel realised and had been set up by the writers for continuation so when it just ended it had many unanswered questions. the fans started petitions to the tv channel, and the response was so strong they commisioned a half season where they hot shotted the remainder of the plot to provide closure. Whilst this has become quite common the last few years it was quite rare back during that time, and that fan pushback was a really kind of a prototype for simmilar efforts by fans of other cancelled shows in the coming years to either get the channel to reboot their show, or the IP sold to another company who were willing to re-commission more series.

He talks about how the Americans at FOX were adamant to copy every minute detail rather than just take the premise and adapt it for an American audience. He apparently spent months encouraging them just to have 3 judges as they had 3 which worked early on but as the British one had 4 they tried to do same even if the 4 judge didn't fit on the panel.

Whereas america want their own top gear, with their own presenters, and their own production style and probably American product placements too. But as you said. They just rip off what's already been done. Either create something new or keep the original. With wallace and gromit they wanted American accents so the audience would relate more. Even as a claymation world, the world of wallace and gromit looks so brittish. Having them having American accents would just look weird. Also the work that goes into every little mouth movement can takes weeks. It wouldn't have been so easy to rework that without it looking like a badly dubbed Japanese film. The USA remake of LIFE ON MARS with that ending sounds bad. Now i feel like I want to rewatch the original (it was so long ago when i watched it when it first aired). The US life on mars had a better budget and was superior in some respects but they didn't go after the historic cultural references like the UK one did not to the same degree. Instead of the iconic colour test screen reminding sam he wasn't in the real world. The US had a mars rover driving around. Then when they explained it all as a simulation instead of sam being in a coma it just didn't make sense. The UK version was literally Sam's life flashing before his eyes and him finding peace in limbo in the 70s.. He went from being a cop in modern day to being hit by a car and trying to solve crimes that were connected to current events the he was trying to reconcile, except this was taking part in the 70s. The US version just wound up making no fricken sense because of the ending.

Honestly love your videos they're so funny, and you're so relatable! I have family in california and it's stunning! It shocked me to find out that you guys often/don't learn about other countries and how they work and what they look like and what they're history is so I love seeing your genuine reactions to all these things and I'd love to learn about America too, for a brit the states has always been the land of dreams, freedom and huge food portions 😅 keep it up man!

It goes both ways. Some bright spark thought we needed a UK version of the golden girls. It was called the Brighton belles. On the telly in the early 90s and was shite. BTW I heart ur socks. Keep them coming. X

Doctor Who? That 1996 episode was written, produced and directed by Brits. It was filmed in Canada. American money though but the artistic heart was British. I don't think it belongs in the list

Some others that deserve a mention: - Taskmaster US. The UK version is the funniest programme I’ve ever seen, but America somehow fucked it up - Red Dwarf. It’s such a classic but again, they just didn’t understand what made it work. US remakes currently in development: - Ghosts. I love the UK version so much (series 3 came out yesterday!!!) but c’mon, you can’t have it without the iconic Horrible Histories cast - Welcome to Flatch, a remake of This Country. It looks like they might actually do a decent job of adapting this, but it won’t be as funny or entertaining as the original

Doctor Who is probably the only US version of a show that was embraced by the UK. We were just so happy to have it back, in hindsight it’s probably a good thing it failed. Also love the Big Bang Theory. And we’re not innocent of this in the UK. ITV tried to remake “That 70s Show” & it was terrible!

TBBT is brilliant also Frasier and Friends. The UK, has to be Father Ted, the IT Crowd, Motherland, Black Books, Friday night dinner and Count Arthur Strong.

Don't forget that "Three's Company" was called "Man About the House" in the UK originally, "Steptoe & Son" become "Sanford & Son" across the pond & "Please Sir!" became "Welcome Back Cotter". There may be others.

I like your channel pointing out all the bad American versions of UK tv shows. but back in the 70's the US actually got it right i.e threes company was based on the UK sitcom Man about the House. All in the family (and almost all of the Norman Lear shows) were also based on UK sitcoms.

As an older viewer I'd include Man About the House. The American remake called Three's Company was terrible it's only redeeming quality being the introduction of John Ritter.

Perhaps the idea is that Americans won't understand British accents or references, but I've watched Americans reacting to Peter Kay (one of Britain's top comedians) who has a very strong Lancashire accent and finding him hilarious. Okay, they may not understand every word, but I'm the same when US shows start talking about baseball! P.S. Keep socking it to us , JT!

@MrWhodini223 жыл бұрын
@@Kit_Bear You realise that alternative comedy, which Young Ones was a part of was anti pretty much all those shows? The comedians that were "alternative comedy" were a reaction against the Bernard Mannings, Jim Davidson etc and there reliance on 'my mother in law' / 'my black neighbour, who is black' style humour.

Regarding the US Doctor Who, it was pretty garbage, but Paul McGann acted his heart out for it and I think he could have been a really good doctor had only he been given a chance. The current version of Doctor Who does make the TV movie canon though, as McGann did come back to reprise his role in a short called Night Of The Doctor, which only drove home the point about just how great he could have been if only he'd had the chance.

Can you imagine if we remade The Dukes of Hazzard or The A Team with a UK cast and setting.....we didn't because we know it would be bad. We do remake US shows but 99.9% of them are game shows and everyone does that and no one can mess them up.
@leehallam93653 жыл бұрын
The Dr Who film was fine, its just that there wasn't a US audience. It wasn't a remake it was a bigger budget attemp to try to get an international audience. Fawlty Towers actually had several attempts a remakes before Payne, there was one where they made Basil a woman, and cast Bea Arthur, there was another where they decided the best thing was to drop the Basil character all together, neither worked. Generally it works best if they take the basic idea then start from scratch, so long as they do a good job. That's true of The Office, but also of older shows like All In The Family and Sanford and Family.

What really bothers me with the (awful) remakes is how Americans NEED to cast overly attractive people that smile all the time and have hair make up over done! Our comedy's have regular relatable looking people for a purpose
@vickytaylor91553 жыл бұрын
The Big Bang theory, Roseanne, Grace under fire, Everybody loves Raymond good American series. Otherwise I think we do irony and comedy better in the uk.
@salfordnurse3 жыл бұрын
Fawlty Towers had 3 remakes. Payne, Amanda's by the Sea and Snavely. The Doctor Who TV Movie was actually made partly by the BBC and is considered part of the original and New British TV show. The only parts that were original to the TV Movie and are copyrighted to the US were the two 'companions' that were introduced in the film
@robertdraper57823 жыл бұрын
The problem in transferring shows is usually quality over quantity in the UK a season would be 6 - 8 shows in the US it's more like 20 - 25. The original UK shows were written by single or pairs of writers who allow the comedy to evolve while US comedy usually has a writers room with several writers contributing material so it becomes more about squeezing the jokes into the script.
