I'd argue the DS3 secret ending is the best outcome since you end the cycle.

at the cost of wiping out all life, i'd hardly call that a good ending. what's the point in ending the cycle if there's no one there to appreciate it.

@@alexjones50The Ursupation of fire ending hints at there eventually being new emebers again far of in the future tho. Gwyn the first lord of flame stopped the natural cycle and is the reason everything is slowly rotting away instead of following the natural cycle of the Soulsverse

both the dark souls 1 and 3 age of dark endings are the good ending. the world is in the sorry state its in, because the gods refuse to allow the age of fire to end, for fear of losing their rule. the age of dark allows natural progression to finally continue and in time usher in the age of humanity, where gods are no longer needed, because mortals can produce their own flames. the endings seem bleak, but they break the cycle and give hope.

Can definitely confirm the Streets of Rage difficulty. My dad and I used to play the game together a lot, and when I discovered there was a bad ending (I think because of the sound/music menu), we tried everything we could think of to get the bad ending. Except, apparently, telling the big bad no (or we could just never beat him because of the PvP thing). So thank you!

Usurpation of Fire isn't really a bad ending. Elden Ring's Frienzied Flame ending would have been better.

Actually, the bad ending in Mafia III isn't any harder to get than any of the others. Regardless of how many of your lieutenants are left at the end, if you choose to go to the mansion at the end, you'll get the choice to 'Rule Together' or 'Rule Alone'.

I absolutely hated the Rule Alone ending from Mafia III. I’ve watched all of the endings, and it’s my least favorite. Spending the whole game fighting gangsters and avenging your family, only to end up being worse than the people you just killed.

I'd like to throw in the game Drakengard. It has 5 endings, and the last one can only be unlocked by seeing the other four and also collecting all of the weapons in the game, some of which require counterintuitive gameplay. While the first ending preserves the status quo, the next three see your world doomed by either demons, dragons, or eldritch gods. The final ending, however, dooms two world: yours, and the world from Nier. By chasing the demon queen into the world of Nier, you become the catalyst for the White Chlorination Syndrome, as your magical background introduces a magical disease that the world is not prepared to fight off, and the Demon Queen's death sparks the Red-Eye disease that turns people into a homicidal hive-mind This means that, while the first ending is canon to Drakengard 2, the fifth ending is canon to the Nier series

Ducktales for the NES has an ending for beating the game with zero dollars, and since you get money for beating the levels, the only way to get the bad ending is to use your money to refill health, and I don't even know how to do that.

that one bad ending in chapter 5 of corpse party that requires you to play through like 3 hours of gameplay and doesn't tell you you've done anything wrong until it's way too late

Streets of Rage has another caveat. If you say you want to join the bad guys and defeat your partner, if you say yes join the bad guys again you're kicked out of the building and back to the street. You have to do the last few levels again then fight the big boss.

Superdimension Neptune vs. Sega Hard Girls. To get the bad ending, you have to beat the final boss in your very first encounter. You only have IF, Segami, Neptune, and Sega Saturn at this point, and are extremely underleveled. Your reward: IF continues roaming the wasteland that is Gamindustri, thinking everything has been resolved.

I'd say that Puyo Puyo Tsu would qualify for this type of list. You can fight the true final boss early if you have a low score after defeating all of the first-floor opponents, but you have to intentionally play a slow style to get to that point. And it's much easier to rack up points. And if you've still got too low a score to move up a floor, you're kicked out and it's game over.

AC6 might count, depends on how you interpret the endings, but the final ending (which requires 3 playthroughs and some of the most monstrous difficulty bumps of the game to beat) has you betray all of your friends, all of the corporations and basically enable the slaughter of every last human on the planet to follow an AI's plan to enact "Coral Release" and force the symbiosis of Coral and Humanity regardless of the will of either species. The ending is literally Alea Iacta Est, "the die is cast", a decision that cannot ever be taken back as whatever you forced Humanity and Coral into being, for good or worse, the universe is forever changed (and the ominous final words implies the hope that this will create understanding and peace has failed dramatically).

Elsinore has such an ending. You basically have to kill everyone around, and since most NPCs are in the same area as others, you have to be careful to avoid being caught.

A very hard bad ending that a few people know is in the fuga melodiees of steel series, in both games you need to sacrifice all of your characters to get the worst ending and that makes the whole game way harder

Disgaea 2’s Worst Ending is harder and worse than several of those endings. What you need to do: 100 Felonies on Adell AND 100 Ally Kills caused by Adell (one of them MUST be Rozalin), then after the final boss (level 90), defeat a level 2000 enemy. What happens: Adell gets possessed, then proceeds to kill and EAT his adopted brother and sister complete with realistic bone crunching and gulping noises. Had to be censored to avoid an M Rating in the US version.

There's something you forgot to mention about the Genocide Route of Undertale (though It's been so long infamous that there's likely very few who don't know, spoilers ahead to those that this applies) . . . . . . . . ... and that's how you end up actually becoming a monster when you lose your soul to the true big bad, who's been dwelling inside you all along while apparently influencing your notorious behavior. Not only is this quite the bleak ending, it also affects all your future playthroughs. So unless you completely wipe out your save data (easier on some systems than on others) even your best endings will turn into bad ones, making your first Genocide Route truly the worst of all endings only reserved for the most masochistic of players.

I still think Streets of Rage 4 squandered Streets of Rage 1's become the boss ending. It would have been amazing if the reason Adam was absent as a playable character in 2 and 3 was that he took Mr X up on the offer made in 1, and he had become the defacto leader of the syndicate. Such a wasted opportunity!

Your "wish" was blew out of the water very soon... SoR 2's *main plot* is to rescue Adam from the syndicate, and you get his little brother in the gang to boot... If he was their boss, why do you need to rescue him??? In SoR 3, he shows up as the support, and it is canon that he's the only one in the main 3 who remained a cop......

Necrovision, an FPS you might not have heard of, is defo on this list. It's already kind of a jank and ugly game, but the endings go from good to bad if you increase difficulty. Easy: You wake from a coma after the world war (I forget which, I think it's WW1) is over. Your entire game was a dream, there's no demon invasion coming, you go home to live in peace. Normal: You push back the demons but must prepare for a war with them in the future you might not win. Hard: You take over hell and crush Earth beneath your feet. At least it isn't shaming players for playing on Easy, right?

The dark souls ending isn't actually a "bad" ending. Tbh all of them are basically the same in the greater scheme of things. The only truly bad one is when you kill the fire keeper to take the fire for yourself. A dwindling pathetic little spark barely worth the journey you went through to claim it.
