Happy Birthday and vacation! You identify ALL the mistakes that are made in kitchens. So glad you point them out as so many people just don't see all the mistakes that designers see (and eliminate). Take note people: Garrett is the BEST at sharing all the tips and tricks of a designer with you! My peeve as a designer is lighting that is too high/too small. Just like range hoods that are too small, so many oendants are too small, or chandeliers above tables are too high. Sigh.

I agree with you Garrett on the last kitchen, I lovee it! I think there are too many chairs at the island, gives it a commercial look, but all and all still love it. Like you said the space between the ceiling and the cabinets takes away from the perfection of the design, I wonder if they were forced to leave space do to the ceilings not being perfectly level. When we redid our kitchen we found that the ceiling slopes slightly do to house settling, leaving almost a one inch gap on one side, the contractor told us that the cabinets meeting the ceilings would emphasize the ceiling not being perfectly flat, to conceal it he suggested leaving a space. By the way you look amazing!!

Those high bar dated kitchen countertops you were talking about earlier in your video we have one and I love it actually. I know a lot of people are having those taken out but the advantages in an open concept it hides The kitchen sink and dishes etc. The trick is to take away the barstools doesn't need barstools and people don't need to sit there. Then it works great to put out hors d'oeuvres I often use that to sit my candles while they're burning also when the guys come over it gives them a good place to lay their sunglasses and wallet. My mate is 6 foot three and he loves having the tall counter to place things on now and then.

After careful consideration with my kitchen remodel I went with a low profile over the stove microwave. It has a powerful fan and seems to do the job. My kitchen is on the smaller side and I could not give up any counter top or cabinet space to put a microwave in. I'm really happy with my decision.

Happy Birthday, Garrett! Thank you for discussing the hoods. I'm struggling to pick one currently! I live in a 1930's brick bungalow and am trying to be respectful of the home's history in my kitchen remodel. We've got cherry wood cabinets (including beautiful "larder" cabinets, which I fell in love with after you talked about them!), soap stone counters, white subway tile, and SS appliances. I'm really drawn to copper hoods as objects and am heavily considering. It will be a stand alone hood much like the one you showed with the hood that was too small. I was thinking the warm copper tones would look good with the warm wood tones from the larder cabinets on the other wall. What do you guys think? Should one mix a copper hood with a SS range??
@GarrettLeChic2 жыл бұрын

Maybe if you added some stainless steel trim to the copper hood, otherwise it probably would look a little bit too different.
@ChelWagz2 жыл бұрын
@@gurubhaikhalsa9337 Thanks for your reply. Yes, that's my concern. Some of the ranges I looked at had copper details that would've been great but didn't work for other reasons. The hood is really the last decision I'm making for this project. It's funny how we sometimes get stuck on the last decision!
@prophetessoftroy Жыл бұрын
I know I’m two months late here, but I echo the other commenter. Adding just that touch of SS banding could tie it together. Otherwise, I’d say treat it as the big statement in your space and tie it in with some copper accessories. What you’ve described sounds absolutely gorgeous, so I’m sure whatever you end up choosing will look equally lovely!

I truly enjoy and learn an immense amount from your videos, Garrett. I wish you might address what I see as a common design problem now, that of a busy (granite) countertop, patterned floor, and then equally busy backsplash. I see this in so many homes now and it is so distracting. I can see one pattern in a kitchen, maybe 2 if they are expertly done, but three? No, thank you! I also know that you don't like the microwave above the stovetop but I have to point out that in many small kitchens (none of these 10 kitchens even approached small) the only way to have venting AND a handy microwave is to place it above the stove. There simply isn't the room that these large ornate hoods require. I wish you might speak to smaller spaces as well as the larger ones.
@GarrettLeChic2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Celeste! I’m sure I’ll address it again, but the combination of busy countertops and backsplashes with patterned floors was a topic of this video. I understand that some people may not have a choice because of the size of their kitchen but to place the microwave above the cooktop versus a hood. However, I’ve seen many large kitchens with microwaves above the cooktop. I don’t think that represents an ideal placement aesthetically especially when the microwave could be placed in another location allowing for a hood and creating better function and a more elevated look. Also if you go to my channel page, I have done videos on smaller spaces as well you can view.

The best kitchen appliance I ever bought is a counter depth refrigerator. The kitchen in my current home was built for Barbie; a full-depth refrigerator sticks so far out in the room, it's the only thing you see. With the counter depth refrigerator, I gain eight inches of floor space.

@@sarah8336 My kitchen is a galley kitchen. The walk-way is 45 inches wide. A refrigerator that sticks out 8 inches leaves me with 37 inches between the refrigerator door and the dishwasher opposite it. I cook a lot. One of the things I like, surprisingly, is that the space is quite compact, so I'm not wasting steps from one task to another. The counter depth refrigerator gives me back two square feet. That's huge in my Barbie Dream (nightmare?) Kitchen.

Hi Garrett - I'm a new subscriber. I like most of your decorating advice! While I see from your photo examples, an above counter microwave is unattractive but the way mine is located and the function it has for me while cooking meals works for me. I think moving it to a lower cabinet wouldn't make it any more attractive....one looks up and sees it, or one looks down and sees it. My current struggle however is trying to find lights to replace "the girls" in my kitchen. So far nothing appeals to me. I also counted the number of them in my entire house: 10! That adds up when they all could/should be replaced.

Happy birthday, Garrett! The busy kitchen at 5:16 also has a lighting issue. Not sure where the light is coming from for that photo because it isn't coming from that single boob light. There's no undercab lighting. With the micro over the stove there isn't task light in a range hood. And what's with 2 lights over the sink in front of a window but only 1 light for the rest of the kitchen?
@sunshine6271 Жыл бұрын
There doesn’t appear to be any overhang for it to be an actual bar where you would put stools for people to sit at. It looks more like a large pass through to somewhat open up the kitchen to the living area. Maybe they wanted some separation between the living area and kitchen that an open concept design doesn’t provide so they chose a pass through for just a little bit of openness.

Garrett, thank you so much for bringing us these valuable kitchen ideas on your cruise trip. I appreciate your solution to light up the gap between the ceiling and the top cabinet. I also learned my mistake to have island too far from my sink. They are 5' apart. I originally thought the wider the better as at family reunion, many ppl brings dishes into the sink. But now I realized I lost the golden triangle. I hardly use my island to prepare dinner, I still crowd my counter because the island is too far away. It's so important to have your advices.

We have a 75 year old family tile and granite company. The one thing I do in all my houses I've designed and built, I never do that 4 inch back splash anywhere in the house. I hate the line it creates when it is used. All my back splashes all start on the counter and then die at the cabinet bottoms or go all the way to the height of the top cabinets such as above the sink and behind the stove. And we never use tile on countetops. I do use natural stone tile on the back splash but then seal it with a sealer that makes the tile and grout impervious to staining. The grout we use between the counter top and splash is always a matching color sanded flexible grout that of course is the color match to the grout if using tile on it. Solid surface to solid surface is just a matched colored or clear calk. I also put things like the microwave, coffee machines and toasters and other small appliances in a pantry.

Happy birthday, Garrett! I seem to recall this is a significant year for you, warranting a cruise, so enjoy! And thank you for not forcing us to go a week without you. Much appreciated. The last kitchen is the most luxurious, of course, but, frankly, I wouldn’t trade any of them for mine. In my custom kitchen, I avoided every complaint you raise in your video - well, almost. Regarding bar stools, I dislike counter stools, as well. My kitchen is large enough that we were able to install a table, 4’ x 4’, which abuts the back of my kitchen island. I had a beautiful steel pedestal made for it and finished in the oil-rubbed bronze of my cabinet hardware and plumbing fixtures. The island counter and table tops are Neutrino Bordeaux granite, while my counters are black granite. I have 4 upholstered chairs that fit under the table and are as comfortable as any dining chair. No perching in my house! I have a second sink in my island, but it is located at one end. Having a sink directly across from a stove top is, in my opinion, awkward, if not potentially hazardous. Because my kitchen table and island are, in effect, one, I did install matching fxtures over them, albeit one is linear and the other square. I don’t think you’d mind. All the best in the coming year❤️

Hi Garrett! Enjoy your cruise! I’ve been watching your videos for a while and finally subscribed. Love your content. While I appreciate your putting something out while on vacation, be sure to focus solely on vacation next time. We will all understand your absence.

Happy birthday Garrett, enjoy your vacation. Your videos are so informative. I want to remodel my 1996 kitchen this year. I wish I could send you some pictures and get some ideas. I feel a little lost 😊 Have a great time on your birthday vacation.

Hi there! We haven't heard from you in a long time. Hope all is well. My birthday vacation was three months ago, but thanks for your wishes. It was a great time. Here are two ways I can help you: 1) If you haven't already, I humbly suggest subscribing and putting the bell notifications on so you don't miss anything I post. We have allot planned. 2) As you have time, I suggest going to the channel page, and watching any videos you may have missed. There is allot of great information there. Have you watched the video I posted today? That would help allot if you are feeling lost. :)

Good Morning Garrett, Thankyou very much for the video and taking time out of your special holiday cruise:) Have a splendid vacation!! I did see the episode the day it was aired but was quiet caught up, and you know that I write to you in a connected way not just for the sake of jotting some words here and there, so today I have that Morning ME time🥰 Can I be honest, I didn’t love any kitchen in a way that made me think Aah this is something that I will pick for my another house😬but I like all of them for one or another reason. The things that I am not very fond of is the bulky ceiling lights in the kitchen. I like the sleek recessed lights. Rest all you spoke is always knowledge😍 You have a safe and wonderful holiday. Thanks, Garrett, for posting even though you’re on holiday! I absolutely loved the last kitchen you featured. Do you have a rule for how much pendant lighting is too much? My dining room and kitchen is one open space. Currently, there’s one statement pendant light that hangs over the dining table. I’m tempted to put in more over the kitchen island, but am afraid it would draw attention away from the dining space. Thanks.

Hi, Garrett, I'm a new subscriber, and I appreciate you making a video on your birthday cruise! I am re-doing my galley kitchen - what would you suggest I do with the paper towel roll and the butter that we always leave out? I look forward to more great ideas from you!!

Happy Birthday to you Garrett. 🎉 I would love to see some kitchens with cabinets that are not white or timber colour. I personally am worn out by white, having had white kitchens since 1982. My parents had timber. I’m so bored with these choices. I would love to see a bit of colour. Not intrusive, loud or neon colours but elegant, heartwarming, inviting colours. Is this an uninformed request? Is it too much to ask these days?
@sarah83362 жыл бұрын
While I can agree with you that white and wood tones are boring. They appeal to a wider range of people. Colors are so personal. I would have done green or blue cabinets but I’m sure for resell that would be a bad idea. I choose white and I’ll bring in my favorite colors in art, towels, canisters and my kitchen aid mixer. Also I can paint the walls in my favorite greens and blues if I want. If I get bored of the walls it won’t cost an arm and a leg to repaint.

I have three bars in my small kitchen as well as it’s on an angle AND big soffits therefore the crappy mdf cabinets are minuscule. The only thing I like is the slab taupe marble countertop which would have to be demolished if I remodel.

Happy Birthday and enjoy your cruise! I love those lantern pendants and saw something similar in AD. They said they're available from Circa, but I still can't find them. Great suggestion about breaking up the island symmetry. Thanks, as always!

Hi Garrett, I always love how you pick examples that are relatable to us pheasants. I don't like when other designers show 50K kitchen examples in a $5M house ! Yours are always something we've seen and totally relatable. I keep hearing white kitchen is out, but white and cooler tone colors look so much cleaner... I am a bit scared of going back to warmer or dark color. Is there low commitment solutions to this change of trend ???

Thanks so much! I try to create varied content from ultra luxury to the more budget friendly. I want to be of help to as many people as possible. I don’t base allot on trends, but prefer the idea of curating spaces to suit the tastes and likes of the individual. Without speaking with you and seeing your space it’s hard for me to make intelligent suggestions. I think a consultation with me would be beneficial to you. If that is something you would be interested in please feel free to book an appointment at: intro.co/garrettlechic 😊😊😊
