Can we add high dinning tables that have barstools, to the things that should never be a part of any form of kitchen/dining? I hate it when restaurants have those horrible tables, let alone in a home.

My apartment has a huge, built-in, high, bar style counter top . The sink, cooker and kitchen counter top are on the other side of it . It is concrete covered with tile so practically impossible to replace. Therefore it is decorated with a runner and bar stools but they’re just for show! It looks good despite being totally impractical!

I agree with you Garrett on the last kitchen, I lovee it! I think there are too many chairs at the island, gives it a commercial look, but all and all still love it. Like you said the space between the ceiling and the cabinets takes away from the perfection of the design, I wonder if they were forced to leave space do to the ceilings not being perfectly level. When we redid our kitchen we found that the ceiling slopes slightly do to house settling, leaving almost a one inch gap on one side, the contractor told us that the cabinets meeting the ceilings would emphasize the ceiling not being perfectly flat, to conceal it he suggested leaving a space. By the way you look amazing!!

I truly enjoy and learn an immense amount from your videos, Garrett. I wish you might address what I see as a common design problem now, that of a busy (granite) countertop, patterned floor, and then equally busy backsplash. I see this in so many homes now and it is so distracting. I can see one pattern in a kitchen, maybe 2 if they are expertly done, but three? No, thank you! I also know that you don't like the microwave above the stovetop but I have to point out that in many small kitchens (none of these 10 kitchens even approached small) the only way to have venting AND a handy microwave is to place it above the stove. There simply isn't the room that these large ornate hoods require. I wish you might speak to smaller spaces as well as the larger ones.
@GarrettLeChic
@GarrettLeChic Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Celeste! I’m sure I’ll address it again, but the combination of busy countertops and backsplashes with patterned floors was a topic of this video. I understand that some people may not have a choice because of the size of their kitchen but to place the microwave above the cooktop versus a hood. However, I’ve seen many large kitchens with microwaves above the cooktop. I don’t think that represents an ideal placement aesthetically especially when the microwave could be placed in another location allowing for a hood and creating better function and a more elevated look. Also if you go to my channel page, I have done videos on smaller spaces as well you can view.

@@GarrettLeChic I really hope under the counter microwaves become more popular because that solves the access and storage space issue with microwaves. I'm short with a bad shoulder so I really hate microwaves over the stove.

The best kitchen appliance I ever bought is a counter depth refrigerator. The kitchen in my current home was built for Barbie; a full-depth refrigerator sticks so far out in the room, it's the only thing you see. With the counter depth refrigerator, I gain eight inches of floor space.

@@sarah8336 , I am an avid cook and we have kids here part-time. I haven’t found the lack of space to be a problem. Then again, I have an extra freezer in the laundry room/pantry, so that helps!

@@sarah8336 My kitchen is a galley kitchen. The walk-way is 45 inches wide. A refrigerator that sticks out 8 inches leaves me with 37 inches between the refrigerator door and the dishwasher opposite it. I cook a lot. One of the things I like, surprisingly, is that the space is quite compact, so I'm not wasting steps from one task to another. The counter depth refrigerator gives me back two square feet. That's huge in my Barbie Dream (nightmare?) Kitchen.

Happy Birthday, Garrett! Thank you for discussing the hoods. I'm struggling to pick one currently! I live in a 1930's brick bungalow and am trying to be respectful of the home's history in my kitchen remodel. We've got cherry wood cabinets (including beautiful "larder" cabinets, which I fell in love with after you talked about them!), soap stone counters, white subway tile, and SS appliances. I'm really drawn to copper hoods as objects and am heavily considering. It will be a stand alone hood much like the one you showed with the hood that was too small. I was thinking the warm copper tones would look good with the warm wood tones from the larder cabinets on the other wall. What do you guys think? Should one mix a copper hood with a SS range??

@@gurubhaikhalsa9337 Thanks for your reply. Yes, that's my concern. Some of the ranges I looked at had copper details that would've been great but didn't work for other reasons. I know I’m two months late here, but I echo the other commenter. Adding just that touch of SS banding could tie it together. Otherwise, I’d say treat it as the big statement in your space and tie it in with some copper accessories. What you’ve described sounds absolutely gorgeous, so I’m sure whatever you end up choosing will look equally lovely!

Those high bar dated kitchen countertops you were talking about earlier in your video we have one and I love it actually. I know a lot of people are having those taken out but the advantages in an open concept it hides The kitchen sink and dishes etc. The trick is to take away the barstools doesn't need barstools and people don't need to sit there. Then it works great to put out hors d'oeuvres I often use that to sit my candles while they're burning also when the guys come over it gives them a good place to lay their sunglasses and wallet. My mate is 6 foot three and he loves having the tall counter to place things on now and then.

We have a 75 year old family tile and granite company. The one thing I do in all my houses I've designed and built, I never do that 4 inch back splash anywhere in the house. I hate the line it creates when it is used. All my back splashes all start on the counter and then die at the cabinet bottoms or go all the way to the height of the top cabinets such as above the sink and behind the stove. And we never use tile on countetops. I do use natural stone tile on the back splash but then seal it with a sealer that makes the tile and grout impervious to staining. The grout we use between the counter top and splash is always a matching color sanded flexible grout that of course is the color match to the grout if using tile on it. Solid surface to solid surface is just a matched colored or clear calk. I also put things like the microwave, coffee machines and toasters and other small appliances in a pantry.

After careful consideration with my kitchen remodel I went with a low profile over the stove microwave. It has a powerful fan and seems to do the job. My kitchen is on the smaller side and I could not give up any counter top or cabinet space to put a microwave in. I'm really happy with my decision.

Happy birthday, Garrett! I seem to recall this is a significant year for you, warranting a cruise, so enjoy! And thank you for not forcing us to go a week without you. Much appreciated. The last kitchen is the most luxurious, of course, but, frankly, I wouldn’t trade any of them for mine. In my custom kitchen, I avoided every complaint you raise in your video - well, almost. Regarding bar stools, I dislike counter stools, as well. My kitchen is large enough that we were able to install a table, 4’ x 4’, which abuts the back of my kitchen island. I had a beautiful steel pedestal made for it and finished in the oil-rubbed bronze of my cabinet hardware and plumbing fixtures. The island counter and table tops are Neutrino Bordeaux granite, while my counters are black granite. I have 4 upholstered chairs that fit under the table and are as comfortable as any dining chair. No perching in my house! I have a second sink in my island, but it is located at one end. Having a sink directly across from a stove top is, in my opinion, awkward, if not potentially hazardous. Because my kitchen table and island are, in effect, one, I did install matching fxtures over them, albeit one is linear and the other square. I don’t think you’d mind. All the best in the coming year❤️

Happy birthday Garret! Enjoy your vacay! In the last kitchen, in addition to the gap above the cabinets, the second thing that drew my eye was the power socket on the side of the island. It's really conspicuous in that expanse of white. It would have been easy to move it around the corner and hide it under the counter.

Hi Garrett - I'm a new subscriber. I like most of your decorating advice! While I see from your photo examples, an above counter microwave is unattractive but the way mine is located and the function it has for me while cooking meals works for me. I think moving it to a lower cabinet wouldn't make it any more attractive....one looks up and sees it, or one looks down and sees it. My current struggle however is trying to find lights to replace "the girls" in my kitchen. So far nothing appeals to me. I also counted the number of them in my entire house: 10! That adds up when they all could/should be replaced.

Garrett, thank you so much for bringing us these valuable kitchen ideas on your cruise trip. I appreciate your solution to light up the gap between the ceiling and the top cabinet. I also learned my mistake to have island too far from my sink. They are 5' apart. I originally thought the wider the better as at family reunion, many ppl brings dishes into the sink. But now I realized I lost the golden triangle. I hardly use my island to prepare dinner, I still crowd my counter because the island is too far away. It's so important to have your advices.

I agree with you about the bar countertop. I don’t mind sitting at the bar in a restaurant having a drink but have never wanted one in my house. We just finished removing that ‘step up’ counter and making the counter a bit wider and all the same height. The kitchen you show with all the pattern (floor, countertop, backsplash) could be less busy if the grout was painted the same color as the tile. This would be less expensive if you could not afford to remove the tiles. Happy Birthday!

3:00 the thing I noticed in that kitchen was the fridge. It has a free edge that, to me, makes the fridge look like an after thought, plus, if you open the fridge door it impedes the exterior door. Also, the cabinetry over the fridge is wonky. It's like no thought was made when designing the fridge and cabinets. I'm not hating the micro over the fridge, I prefer that to a micro on the counter. In a perfect world, an island would help with needed counter space if you wanted to ditch the over the range option. But, man, the first thing I saw in this picture was that fridge! It looks like a diamond in a rhino's ass.

Yes. The fridge should have a panel wall on the left and cabs above extend all the way out to front of fridge. Looks built-in. Our cabinet maker cut some vertical lines in the flat side panel. Sort of like beadboard or shiplap to give it an interest. Looks perfect. Because I had no space I had to have an over range microwave/ exhaust. I chose a low profile ss and a slide in range with no back controls. Looks perfect. A larger vent hood is a huge waste of space. We have cabinets above our microwave all the way to ceiling, too. Have to make the best of a small kitchen.

Ventilation is highly important in the kitchen space, especially with gas ranges. Microwaves above the range is a big NO for many reasons, but the lack of ventilation is tops.

Happy birthday, Garrett! The busy kitchen at 5:16 also has a lighting issue. Not sure where the light is coming from for that photo because it isn't coming from that single boob light. There's no undercab lighting. With the micro over the stove there isn't task light in a range hood. And what's with 2 lights over the sink in front of a window but only 1 light for the rest of the kitchen?

Hi Garrett, I always love how you pick examples that are relatable to us pheasants. I don't like when other designers show 50K kitchen examples in a $5M house ! Yours are always something we've seen and totally relatable. I keep hearing white kitchen is out, but white and cooler tone colors look so much cleaner... I am a bit scared of going back to warmer or dark color. Is there low commitment solutions to this change of trend ???

Thanks so much! I try to create varied content from ultra luxury to the more budget friendly. I want to be of help to as many people as possible. I don’t base allot on trends, but prefer the idea of curating spaces to suit the tastes and likes of the individual. Without speaking with you and seeing your space it’s hard for me to make intelligent suggestions. I think a consultation with me would be beneficial to you. If that is something you would be interested in please feel free to book an appointment at: intro.co/garrettlechic 😊😊😊

Happy Birthday ....i so agree with hating to sit on bar stools. It doesn't matter what type they are, having your feet dangling is painful after a while. Love Love that last kitchen but i think there are too many chairs...seems like you would crunch the other people if al lthose were full of people maybe take a couple out. Just curious are you in favor of cabinets or those deep pull out drawers. I love the pull out drawers they are much easier to see what is in them and put things away

Love the coffee/wine bar idea but in a builder grade house that is probably either a coat closet or pantry. If it's a pantry then one might be able to incorporate a coffee bar inside.

Happy Birthday and Happy Cruising🛳️⚓️🌴😎. I opted for a counter height Island and stools in my reno. The reason I did not want a table was that I noticed in my prior kitchen, when people stopped by they were never likely to pull out a chair and sit, even when prompted. When we removed the table and installed a counter height Island people were much more likely to pull out a stool and get comfortable for a while. Could this be our habit of walking into a bar and making ourselves at home? My designer thought this was interesting and has since suggested a similar scenario to her clients and many have opted to go the same way Also a microwave drawer was installed to make way for a statement hood. Much better in my opinion.

Wish I had found you before my kitchen Reno as I would have done a couple things differently but I did ok. There is a terrible show on Netflix Dream Home Makeover which seems to do mostly the opposite of what you say here. Open shelving over cooking areas along with rough stone backsplashes behind the stove. What are they thinking!!!😮 I knew not to do that.

@GarrettLeChic It's a moderately sized kitchen, galley style. The main thing is we are all between 6'2" and 6'6". When we built this house I had them raise the height by placing the cabinets on wooden boxes beneath. Now we have this enormous toe kick that's pretty ugly, but countertops are about 5 inches below my elbow. That's the ideal height from what I have read. I am thinking that an additional layer of drawers above standard sized cabinets might be better.

Often, the microwave above the stove also has a vent, so it has a use. I'd have to give up cabinet space to put the microwave in a cabinet, and I need every bit of space. Above the stove is free space. I know you and some other designers don't like it, but it works for many of us. Also, I suspect the closet in that kitchen might be the washer/dryer.

My kitchen has a pony wall/counter/bar thing going on. I would never put stools there, because I just don't like bars and bar stools. Sadly, we put in silestone counters in a few years ago, and if I had thought about it more, I would have had that wall cut down and just extended the counter top that far, you know? Now I feel stuck with it. It doesn't look bad, exactly, but I wish I could have a do-over.

@@kathiemorris6115 I have discussed various colors and finishes for kitchen cabinets throughout my videos. I would definitely go to my kitchen videos on our channel page and watch those. Color is a personal thing. Whether ultimately any color looks good really depends on how well thought out and how well executed a design or decorating plan occurred relative to the space. At the end of the day you have to be pleased with your space. People do all sorts of colors and designs in their homes. Other people may like it and some may not. Some decorators may like it and other decorators may not like it. Black is a a bold choice so it really depends on the overall space, how well executed the project is, and particularly the lighting. Hope that helps. 😊😊😊

I love your videos. One comment on the last kitchen, we had to leave a gap like that in our high end kitchen between the molding and the ceiling because the finisher said our house (circa 1950) had such uneven surfaces that it would never look right if we had tried to match the ceiling. Anyway, my husband did but some light rope up there (which I hate and told him he could do it as long as I couldn't see it) which rocks to music and can actually be kind of cool given the right crowd. :) My guess is that is probably why your example is that way.
