I love old books & buy lots if the price is right LOL! If I don't use a book in my journals, it becomes a home decor piece - just a few books with pretty covers piled up with vases of flowers, candles, vintage trinkets & dishes stacked on top! I love the look, feel & even smell of old books. I have the Victorian flower book as well - it's so beautiful. I rescue old dictionaries from the recycle bin at the end of the school year when we are all clearing our out classrooms no matter the age or condition. Our school library periodically clears out books that have been damaged beyond repair or haven't been checked out for a very long time. Some of the gems I found were books about early American history. The pictures of the handsome gentlemen, beautiful ladies, and old homes will be used to decorate journals and the mostly text pages will be wonderful for sub-straits for master boards. I've also discovered I can use glossy pictures by covering them with Matte Gel Medium (a product somewhat like Mod Podge) so they look less "new" and blend in with vintage papers better. I've also found older children's book with lovely illustrations - rosy cheeked children with short pants (boys) and dainty dresses (girls) from times gone by. Thank you for sharing your list of qualities you look for in books. I think I unconsciously looked for books in a similar fashion, so having you discuss these points will help me be more purposeful when looking at books (or I may just continue to buy everything I take a fancy to)! Take care!

All great books! I love old foreign language books and vintage children’s books with large fonts. The mix of language’s and font sizes add real interest in my backgrounds. I also find Field Guide books a great source for fussy cutting animals, birds, butterflies etc. Hugs and blessings, ❤️🤗🇨🇦
Thank you, very similar to mine. I also collect books from the 1800s. Rachel Roxburgh inspired this. I have a butterfly guide for fussy cutting and several floras.

Fantastic video - thanks so much. I was at my local secondhand bookshop yesterday and picked up two very interesting texts for junk journalling. One is a vintage book written in German, but the text in the entire book is like an old medieval gothic text. It’s also beautifully aged and patina. I also picked up a 1950s guide to stamp collecting, which has some fabulous black and white photos of stamps throughout.

Hello dear friend, Joie, this is without a doubt a triple 👍. I’ve been buying your suggested books since I began following you. The Victorian Flower Album I actually was fortunate enough to have two. 1 estate sale $3.00, the other at my favorite “Thrift Books” I’d have to agree with you, a # 1 favorite. I have hundreds of fussy cut flowers from the first. Pages used for collaging envelopes and pockets and creating pockets and fun envelopes. I have many things in my “Joie reference journal.” I also love my herb book as well. Again I love it for collage and tags. The nature one was what I was able to find at Thrift books. 10.00 always free shipping. Well done with Williams wallpaper of Andreas. I was very lucky to get 2 of his books. Every time I look through them I hate to cut yet. Gorgeous wallpaper. Gotta run, finish watching re play. Thanks Joie. Always ✅subscribe ✅ like 👍 ✅

I live in the US and I've found 2 books that have lovely green print and beautiful gardening and plant illustrations...they are educational as well. I use them in almost every journal. No color just green print and pictures. Ive actually found the first one twice now which is called LASAGNA GARDENING by Patricia Lanza i can't even tell you how much use i get out of it whenever i found the 2nd one i was ecstatic! The next one is called THE MEDICINE WHEEL GARDEN by E. Barrie Kavasch. This book has the same green printing and illustrations and also has lots of great uses for plants and "recipes" as well. I make a ton of floral journals and these books have been perfect for them plus most of the other journals i make! Of course i have my favorite floral books and dictionaries...i have my favorite childrens books and so many others but these 2 are so unique but so so useful i think any journal maker would love to have them in their collection!

Our local library has a used book sale every other month. In addition to the books you mentioned, Shakespeare, music paper, horticulture, etc., I found a great book maybe an 11 inch by 14 inch format that is Los Angeles Times front pages from 1900 to 1950. Great vintage newsprint! Also a beautiful book of Japanese calligraphy, as well as Illustrated Letters, and beautiful Impressionist art books. Most of them were purchased for $1. In one book I found a postcard that was post marked February 4, 1892!!

Awesome video! Thank you for that. I just have maps that were folded for when your on a trip tour map. My husband has a couple books of maps but he uses them for him and I to talk about where we want to go on a vacation! Sometimes we go. Sometimes not! Either way it was fun looking in the atlas together! 💜 thank you for sharing great video! So very helpful! God bless! Love hugs and prayers my friend! 😇💖🤗🙏

I love your collection but I would also include Edith Holden... although I have been unable to use mine unless it is a very special project... Luckily I was able to find mine at my consignment stores... Can't wait to get to some yard sales... Only started to junk journal since Covid started so I have not have a lot of opportuniities to get to flea markets/ yard sales. Thank you for some wonderful ideas.

Books in foreign languages are great. I have one in Thai (I think) script which gives a really distinctive result in all sorts of projects, also a Latin & Greek text. I picked up a book at a charity shop recently - a beautiful vintage book in an old German font, thick paper so that the printing is almost embossed into it. Some of the illustrations are rather gruesome however - it appears to be a book on animal husbandry!

Thank you for sharing your collection of simply fabulous books. The themes complement one another very well. May I ask regarding the William Morris blue and red paper, what is the holographic paper you used to make the butterfly stand out against the black mat? Thank you! 🦋💙 🎨 🖌

It's just a few bits of shiny cardstock that I have in my paper drawer. I bought it years ago in Poundland ... I used to use it for matting on cards. I think it's still available here in the UK ... Not sure where you are based...?? Thanks for watching and for a great question. What an eye for detail!!🤭👍💜

I did end up doing a cover similar to yours using Purnells Geography and the tapestry print, by hand. It was fun but I'd still prefer to have a sewing machine 😅 Altho lately I've been thing of doing another one 😉.....

Hi joie, I shy away from the old large learning books because what do you do with pages that are a shiny finish. You need Gesso and all that jazz. Thoughts?? I'm the one who has purchases hard cover books that are too similar. Thank you for this good idea Video. Danuta Ca.

Shiny finishes are definitely more challenging. I do use these for pockets..

This is really helpful thank you Joie! I'm a little limited for shopping as our charity shops are too small to get my wheelchair around and usually have steps 😄😄. Also the Mr hates car boot sales. Thankfully eBay can have some bargains if you look around. Love the stamping and painting on the text. I love music too, maybe you could scan them in? My favourite for using as a hidden substrate are children's books because of the feel of them. They're not flimsy but you can easily sew them once I've covered both sides. Text, music and maps are my favourite. Oh Barbara announced the podcast! Looking forward to it 😁. Tfs 💖

I think your eBay solution is a good one .. and the substrate one is too. I'll try more of that. Podcast, yes, well, scary!!!😁👍💜

Hi Joie, I’ve recently started making journals for my shop and wondered if you can tell me if I can use old book pages and images to put inside or to make up the cover without fear of breaching copyright. I know I can use books over a certain age, and think this is 100 years, but what about newer books. Obviously I know I can’t photocopy and sell, but wondered about using the actual pages. I’ve sold journals mainly made from purchased music paper and other paper stacks, but I’m not sure about books I can buy in boot fairs and charity shops. Sorry for the long question, hope you can help me. Thankyou for sharing this video, I really enjoyed it. Take care and stay safe x

Here's my amateur view re copyright...you can use the pages from books in most cases...that is, using a page does not breach copyright but copying it in any form does. So you can't scan it and use the images for example. You can rip it up and just use it in a masterboard. You can't rip it up and use it in a masterboard or collage which is copied. Just don't scan or copy it. It doesn't matter whether the use is private or commercial, the same rules apply. It's the copying that is the issue. Just one other point, outside of copyright some words and concepts are trademarked, so even if a book is out of copyright the words and images might be protected, such as when books are made into films by Disney. Does this help? I'm not an expert so I navigate this world as carefully as possible. xx

Edith Holden book is one of my favorite books for journaling I love the vintage look of the pages and the pretty flowers, kind of like the Victorian flower album by Henry Terry which is a favorite too I have collected few books and I am looking for the other books on your list.

Could it be because of the lockdown and the fact that everyone wanted to have fun at home with, for example, paper, but I bought an Edith Holden book last year for €5. And now they're nowhere for sale for less than €20 🙈
