Thank you for sharing, amazing content as always! A couple of the resources you mentioned were new to me, will totally check them out! (My favorite resources are Phlearn, Graphicriver and iStock.) What I really miss in my list of resources is a place were I can get my work criticised by experienced designers and creative directors. Do you know of such a resource? Does this exist?
@PhilipVanDusen7 жыл бұрын
Øyvind, Great to see you here my friend! I hadn't heard of Phlearn! I'll have to check them out. I have a video I'm working on now on the best design educational site out there and Phlearn wasn't on it, but it might just be soon! On getting your work critiqued: No I don't know of any place like that but it's a great idea and would be a great business opportunity for someone if they could figure out the business model. Young designers usually are exactly flush with cash, so it would have to be affordable - and high level designers and CD's charge a lot for their time, so I can see why it hasn't emerged yet. However, lots of people put designs up in the forums of LinkedIn in design focused groups - and there are a lot of them. I see designers getting feedback on their work all the time there - but you can't be assured they are the kind of accomplished pro's you are looking for. It might be best to try to befriend a few people who you admire and ask to use them as a resource to bounce stuff off of. I have a few old employees who I do that for. But my time is limited, too - so I have to keep it manageable...Build your network of trusted advisors and use them - and reciprocate!
@Hermans867 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Philip, I really appreciate it :) That makes sense, I see how that can be a challenging business model to figure out. Good tip on building a network of trusted advisors! I am a big Photoshop nerd, Phlearn is my goto resource when it comes to that. Phlearn is a great resource for learning Photoshop, lightroom and photography. Another great resource I use quite often is CreativeLive which offers lots of great online classes (on demand or live video classes) in a wide range of categories.

Ash, my Amazon affiliate link disclaimer is at the bottom of every video description I have - as required by Amazon. Sir if I purchase stock image from Shutterstock... could other person buy same image from Shutterstock after I purchase it?what happen after I buy specific image from Shutterstock...
@PhilipVanDusen5 жыл бұрын
Veenod, buying an image from Shutterstock only gives you the rights to use it. Others can purchase licenses to use the same image, too. If you want to license an image exclusively - so no one else can use it - you can, but the cost is prohibitively expensive in most cases.
@vin74995 жыл бұрын
@@PhilipVanDusen thank you sir for your reply.. actually my client want image exclusively for gym branding.... could we buy image in Shutterstock that solely own by my client.
@PhilipVanDusen5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can buy full exclusive usage rights of images. But as I said it is usually too much money - 10's of thousands if not sometimes 100's of thousands of dollars. Many times it is MUCH cheaper to have an original photo re-shot by your own photographer.

Philip, I really enjoy your channel. The video and sound quality is top notch and that in itself is SO liberating in a world of lowres content. I wanna make a comment on your statement that "having more fonts is even more fun for us designers". I beg to differ. I constantly try to reduce typefaces in my collection. My goal is trim it down even more in 2018. I don't want a gazillion typefaces to choose from, it's only noise. Yeah, I'm a bit Massimo'ish in that department but perhaps you could make a video about reduction in graphic design? So what are YOUR ten typefaces you would like to keep if your were forced to keep just ten in your collection? Thumbs up for great vids and thanks for sharing!
@PhilipVanDusen6 жыл бұрын
Ventende, That is the most awesome video suggestion I have gotten in over 2000+ comments over the last 6 months. I TOTALLY agree. In fact I have about 15 go-to fonts that I use quite religiously - and foist on client after client - because they are just too good not to use (don't tell anyone). Sure I get sucked into having a huge library at my fingertips, but how many times do you page through thousands on fonts just to end up choosing one of those 15. - I'll do the video on it. But I can just hear the comments I'm going to get now..."you use THAT font? really?" You know how designers get...lol. That's for the awesome suggestion - and thanks for watching.
@PhilipVanDusen6 жыл бұрын
P.S. I'll be sure to mention you as the viewer who suggested it!
@Underhills6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I know what you mean. Designers can be pretty religious and everyone holds onto phrases from their book of believe. It's almost become a religion where your either a believer of the free and expressive type aesthetic or you are the voice of reason with a readability first approach. These days I'm actually using more time trying to find good typefaces for small screen devices, mostly geometrical gothic / sans serifs. There's alot of progress in that area that made me explore fonts again made in recent years in addition to having the shortlist of good old work horses. Btw, reduction in graphic design could be a separate topic, I don't think it's a trend category cause it's more of a school.
@PhilipVanDusen6 жыл бұрын
I was actually trained as a painter (MFA in painting) - So I come to design from a very - no rules, expressive perspective, which really ticks off a lot of strict 'type and stripe' bauhaus aficionados. I mix up design terminology all the time. But the success I've had in my career makes up for all as far as I'm concerned. For me it's about expression, communication, inspiration and aesthetics.
@Underhills6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Same time digital media is also alot about rules, or technicalities when trying to please the user groups with good UX and all that. I miss being BIG, bold, expressive and free, but it's not where the work is these days I'm afraid. At least not for me. Wish I was Saul Bass back in his days:)

As a printer, I’d have to disagree with recommending Vistaprint. We get at least 3 or 4 clients a week who come to us because they’re completely dissatisfied with their results. I’d recommend consulting with your local printer before you shop online for your business cards.
@PhilipVanDusen5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know. But Moo and Vista have been getting better. Better stock, better weighs. And for many people its all they can afford. I have to say, I come from a printing family- I grew up working in quick-print shops and on newspaper presses, it is getting harder and harder to FIND local printers who don't just use the same digital output that Vista and Moo - and others use. But point taken.

Great video, Philip! Do you have any tips on how to work with a tough employer / client?
@PhilipVanDusen7 жыл бұрын
I've got TONS of experience with that. What's the issue specifically?
@solariklipz7 жыл бұрын
Well, in my case, I was recently told that I need to create a design with a "Wow factor" in it or I am fired from the job. When I asked them to specify what they mean I've been told that I'm the designer and I should know this. I did manage to make the design that satisfied my employer, however, I feel like this can happen again and I might not be as lucky. I guess what I was really asking is: How do I ask people what they want without them thinking that I'm asking to do the job for me?
@solariklipz7 жыл бұрын
Thank you!
@PhilipVanDusen7 жыл бұрын
yes!
@PhilipVanDusen7 жыл бұрын
I would get specific with your questions when you get a stupid, vague comment like that. For instance: "When you say "wow factor" can you give me an example of a design that you saw recently that did that for you?" (take it out of the context of YOU and put it in their court) "Are you talking about Wow for you, or for the end customer?" Get to know intimately who the end customer is - what they would find exciting and then - when you present your work - use that customer as the target of the designs impact - not the client. Even clients who you are doing a logo for for their own company - that design isn't really for them - it is to excite/impact whoever THEIR customer is going to be. Take the opinion of the work out of the hands of the client and frame it with how you present it in the eyes of the end customer (who is not your client in reality).

So you like Pixteller more than Canva?
@PhilipVanDusen6 жыл бұрын
E, I prefer Canva and that's what others I know prefer, too. As a designer I don't really have much use for them, but others (SMB's and entrepreneurs) do - so that's why I put them in my recco list. Great question. Thanks for commenting!

I am glad I learned about Pixteller from your video though, because I like their mockup templates :)

Brawler, In fact - and you won't believe this, I met the real Colonel Sanders when I was about 18 years old. I was working a road paving crew and he came out and asked us to pave his driveway...so we did! Fun fact.

Philip VanDusen that’s actually amazing

I know, right? He was a really nice guy. I grew up in Anchorage, KY - and the Colonels house was in the vicinity - so was his very first restaurant...

Frank, you're right I stand corrected. The fees are super-cheap though, but yes its a couple bucks. My bad.

im very surprised at the things not mentioned here that i use ON THE REGULAR. one of my most used tools is called What The Font. www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ where you can upload an image of a font that you dont know. say you were asked to recreate something but you dont know the name of the font, this system will recognize the font and find you something close or exactly what it is. AND if you dont find it, you can "consult an expert" and the people on the forums will identify it for you. i usually get a response in less than an hour.

other resources i use: dafont.com freepik.com

cxcevents, I love What The Font. I use it all the time. I wish I could feature every cool resource, but you gotta draw the line somewhere - sadly. Thanks for sharing that with the community!

most of this list is great. Placeit.net is not though. If mockups are in high enough demand you'd pay $30/$100 or more per month for a limited selection, you're better off paying for your designers to learn the skill and produce them manually. It is easy to learn and can be a fun, creative way to sell more digital products on the side.

Thanks for your POV Kevin. Some people don't have their own designers though...so it has it's place. But I get your point, and it is expensive.

Do you have any plans of making an online course on graphic design on platforms like Udemy or Masterclass? Please let me know.
@PhilipVanDusen6 жыл бұрын
Rohit Kumar, Thanks for watching! I'm sorry, but I don't really do tutorials - I focus mostly on strategy and marketing (with some trend and design career stuff thrown in). But I plan on launching a brand building e-mail course very soon.

Thanks for the heads-up, I hear it, but I wouldn't it's "pretty bad" - IMHO anyway - I done a LOT worse. It's my old hard-drive disk array fans. I upgraded them to fix it.

$299 per month for iStock?!! Who pays for that?
@PhilipVanDusen6 жыл бұрын
Hey Daren, Thanks for commenting and watching. There are less expensive plans based on credits. When I have a client that I need a lot of stock for I do it for a month and get unlimited downloads then I cancel it. The client pays for the stock and I still make money. When need more, I reactivate my account. I got 45 high rez images for a website for $175 with unlimited usage for life. Which is a freakin massive bargain. If you don't have paying clients then yes, I can see your point. Go price some stock on Getty, $750-$1250 per image for limited usage. So comparatively it is an excellent resource.

Hi Philip and thanks for the reply. I am currently building a foreign language learning website, and add about 500 images per day. I can get most of what I want on free sites like pixabay. What specific paid package allows unlimited downloads on photos? I use envato elements for a month here and there and use the unlimited downloads there for PSDs, vectors, graphic templates etc. But EE is not so good for photos.

I find iStock to be great. Huge archive including Getty's. Look here for pricing info: www.istockphoto.com/plans-and-pricing --You can get 750images/mo for $399/mo or $333/mo/for 12 months (750 images/mo >12/mo).

Let me guess, and your favorite store is Wal-mart.. no offense but your video recommendations are dated and will only appeal to amateurs. You ignored the thousands of unique graphic resource websites and recommended what anyone can find with a 2 second google search.
@PhilipVanDusen7 жыл бұрын
Brandon, Thanks for your comment. I'm sorry you didn't get anything out of the video. I do my best to produce great content. A lot of my viewers ARE amateurs and those just starting out in their careers - so some of my videos are basic and some more about higher level branding and strategy. I'm sure if you look through my catalog you can probably find another one that features something you don't already know. Feel free to post a few of the better resources you know of to benefit the other viewers and readers of the comments so they can explore them. It's all about giving back with - constructive criticism.

I know, I know. But a LOT of clients don't want to pay for actually nice offset or letterpress - which is a shame- but it's a fact (no matter how hard we try to dissuade them) So using Vista is sometimes the only way to hold on to the business.
