Two things. Walter Kaaden's surname is correctly pronounced as in Karden not Kayden. Walter Kaaden served a short DKW apprentice at Zschopauin the 1930s. Immediately after the war, DKW left its factory at Zschopau and moved to Ingolstadt in West Germany. The Zschopau factory was then run by IFA, a government-subsidised motorcycle company. In 1955, IFA was renamed MZ. Meanwhile, Kaaden had returned from the war to start a company manufacturing building products. In March 1953 he joined IFA as their Race Manager at Zschopau. You can see from this that Kaaden did nothing for DKW as you suggest. And we could argue all day about who invented the expansion chamber and when. It was actually DKW's chief engineer Erich Wolfe who invented and first installed one on a racing motorcycle. That was in 1952 on DKW's little 125 single. It was invented by .

The two MK1 RG500s shown @ 7:50 are/were owned by a mate here in NZ, He recently sold one, but still has the number 56 bike. This is the bike American Pat Hennen campaigned the 76 GP season on, and won the Finnish GP, finishing 3rd in the 76 season. Pat, used to come down to race in NZs, Marlboro Series as it was in the Northern Hemispheres off season, when Suzuki started to sell customer versions of the RG500, the NZ Suzuki importer Rod Coleman bought an RG for Pat to take to Europe. His performance on this bike earned him a spot on the Heron-Suzuki factory racing team for 77...and the animosity of team mate Barry Sheene, who recognized the threat Hennen posed. Pat crashed at the 78 TT, prematurely ending his racing career, Kenny Roberts said of Pat “All I heard when I went to the GPs in 1978 was that I had to beat Barry Sheene, I was surprised when it turned out that Pat was the rider to beat that year. He was a very steady rider. You felt good racing hard against him. He didn’t do anything spectacular or crazy. He was just solid and fast.” Pat Hennen passed away on April 7, 2024 aged 70.

Rip. Pat hennan was a true giant. I remember him well. Saw his first visit to Mallory many years back when no one knew him. Practice started slowly and steadily but by the end of the weekend no one (including Sheene) could even get close to him. Sheene was livid and I heard many stories of the tribulations he caused within the Heron team 😊😊 a class rider with the humility a true champion should always have

I know many of these had to push the bike before the gearing would push her..... We kids had a Yz80 motocross style bike in the 80's & that little bike was fast from the start up to 50mph or so. Something I recall is the sounds as the power band delivered power to the bike... at the very top you'd hear a high pitched whirring sound making you think she was all spent but if ya twisted the throttle a little a second level came out of that bike. So you started rolling and at the peak of sound that made me think I'd got all she had... Umm, NOT b/c she was just getting started. When you think there's nothing more you have this bursting out of power...... and it was crazy fun. I like the smell of 2 strokes but don't know what still uses them now, not that I'm looking. Take care as you work it out. Thanks for the work(s). goodnight from Tx

I loved my Yamaha IT’s, started on a 175, then a 250, a 490, finally the best of the bunch the 200. They were road legal here in NZ, the dealer would fit indicators and brake light switches etc, I used to commute to work for a while on the 490, there a few bikes more unsuitable for commuting than an IT490. 😆It used to cough and fart at slower speeds, but it was savage as it came into the power band, on off road tyres in the wet it could be downright dangerous, even when I did enduros it was too much, the 200 was much better for me.
@barebonesmc2 ай бұрын
@@uhtred7860 people don’t realise that especially off road. More power isn’t always a good thing 😱😱 yes I said it lol. It’s often easier to get a good 250 around an mx track faster than a 450 😊 or a 600 supersport around a track faster than a litre bike 😊 power is only 1 part of a big equation 😊😊😊
