Given that I now have real world experience in both types of aircraft, if I were to put down my own money to purchase an overall useful plane for myself, I would opt for a high wing just for the real world practicality. Most efficient 2 seat airplane, even 45 years since it's mid-1970s introduction, is probably the Rutan Aircraft Factory (later Scaled Composites) Long-EZ. It holds several records for achieving over 40 MPG on longer flights with a full standard load in it - better than a lot of cars - but cruises at around 145 MPH (I think, might have been 145 knots). With a special rear-seat fuel tank added, one of these has flown for over 4800 miles as a class record (at a little over 35 MPG due to the heavier-than-normal loading for most of that flight), but the NORMAL configuration is limited to more like 2000 (on 52 gallons of fuel tank). It's POSSIBLE there is a 2 seat version of the Quicky (also a Rutan design) that might be even more efficient though. Yeah, they're kit planes - but so are several other aircraft on this list.

@@DumbledoreMcCracken Does a Stemme carry 2 people? It might be more efficient - but one would expect 40+ YEARS of technological advancement to make something better. I also can't find ANY specs on it's efficiency for any of the models the list on their web site. *AND* it's quite a bit slower - seems to be about 140 knots MAX which is very close to the efficient CRUISE speed for the Long-EZ - though it does use a smaller, less powerful engine. It does NOT have the range of the Long-EZ though, even for a stock Long-EZ, per it's specifications.
@DumbledoreMcCracken2 жыл бұрын
@@bricefleckenstein9666 you mentioned EFFICIENCY. On a first principles basis, Stemme is a 2 place airplane that I would believe is more efficient than any Vari*, and runs at a reasonable speed. If you want to *_change_* your argument to RANGE, then I doubt that a Vari* can thermal in average conditions. So Stemme most likely wins there too. If you want to *_change_* your argument to SPEED, then I doubt that a Vari* is able to match the most efficient speed/joules-per-second (or meters/joule) of a Lancair Legacy (but I can't be sure without some research and analysis). So, apparently, you change your argument to ensure you "WIN!". That isn't what I call winning, that is what I call not winning.

@@DumbledoreMcCracken And I SAID "it might be more efficient" - but don't know the design, and what I could find on the web about it didn't mention ANYTHING about efficiency, and made it look like it was still in prototype state. DO read my entire comment, and quit cherry-picking and quit trying to say I was "changing" my argument when I did not in fact do so but in FACT brought up additional points to consider. What the heck do you mean by "thermal"? If you mean a Long-EZ won't fly when it's hot, do keep in mind that Rutan is based out of Mohave - one of the HOTTER places on earth - and has never had any issues with the heat there. The failure of manufacturers to adequately and effectively market their products is a masters business school thesis waiting to be written. It is an existing, known product, with a matured market, yet it is going through a renaissance, having been almost eradicated by litigation in the 70's-80's. The "knowledge" is highly technical, and there is a significant barrier to entry (Licensing and flight training.) There is virtually zero broad-approach marketing, in contrast to ads for aircraft aimed at families in the fifties and sixties, in publications like Life, Look, Field and Stream, etc. Now, ads are in...Aircraft enthusiast publications! That is not how a business expands, it is how it lingers and eventually petrifies. The growth, and most of the "excitement" is coming from Eastern European, Brazilian, and small "Kitplane" manufacturers, that do not have the marketing budgets or expertise of the previously mentioned, ossified, legacy manufacturers such as Cessna, Beech, Piper, etc. But, I'm a homebuilder, so, what do I know?

The JMB Evolution VL3 is not a light sport. It has retractable gear (light sport is restricted to FIXED GEAR, ALL OF THEM), and light sport is restricted to 120kts MAX cruise. The ICON is also not technically a light sport...it is a heavier (given a silly exception for increased gross weight) because it has a proprietary anti-spin system that weighs a lot. And it's sea plane. And it costs north of $300k. The Bristell is a nice plane, and its mid priced...but its no different than other low wing SLSA in the segment like the SLING. Btw. NO SLSA CAN CARRY WEIGHT MORE THAN 1300lbs max. The useful for all such aircraft is very small... You admitted it, the RV8 is NOT a light sport, it has a retractable nose gear and its too fast and its a kit. The Risen is also NOT A LIGHT SPORT. It has retractable gear and exceeds speeds and weight for the class. The Just Superstol is VERY COSTLY in its niche as well. The better deal is the RANS S21 SLSA...which can take on the Just and is MUCH cheaper. AND its factory built, unlike the Just. The Diamond DA20 IS NOT A LIGHT SPORT. It is too fast and weighs too much and it also costs nearly $300k. The best two seat planes are SLSA...they cost between $100 to $200k and often come with a chute like the Flight Design and Pipistrel.

@@Dwaynesaviation Europe has slightly different rules for SLSA...the USA has their own and they are being revised by the FAA. this video is about the best 2-seat airplanes. .but just having two seats isnt much of a comparison when the planes in the video are all WAY over $200k and the top prices for any LSA plane. In general. the two seat LSA was created to make aviation more affordable. It failed in many respects, but there really is no way to justify an aircraft that costs $350k plus with only two seats. Esp if they have retractable gear which also cost a lot more to maintain and to insure. The Diamond DA20 for example is a TRAINER. so two seats makes sense, but it is pricey compared to LSA and is not a good plane for general use like a more affordable LSA is.

The JMB is not a light sport in retractable mode and it has a bubble cockpit, hyper hot. ICON is hyper expensive and SLOW. The Bristell is also a bubble cockpit...HOT. The RV8 is a kit (experimental) and not a light sport. The Risen is also not a light sport and bubble cockpit AND not sold in the US. No one gets a recreational pilots cert, if you do that training just finish the private pilot level. The JUST STOL is way overpriced and hyper slow...and only the Highlander model is SLSA. If you want SLSA and speed and STOL get a RANS S21 or a Kitfox. The Diamond is a good plane but also nearly $300k, far over most SLSA prices. The Flight Design CTLSi is a pure SLSA and is very good. Priced around $180k...but it has been superseded by Flight Design with their model F2. The Pipistrel Sinus is also an old design now. Now as good a deal as the FD F2. The Vans RV12 SLSA is a really good plane at a good price.

It is light sport, depending of the country. US is not the center of the universe mate.

@@MadX8 The US is the center of the aviation universe (invented in the US and the best aircraft are made in the US). And planes certified under EASA rules are not honored here in the USA. Light Sport has its own specific and more strict definition in the USA...matters zero if Europe has a different set of rules...if a maker in Europe wants or needs to sell into the US they must comply.

Undiluted crap. Out of date, loads of errors and missing a number of better aircraft.
