just finished the OG RE4 and i think it aged pretty well, the quick time events are my only complaints. San Andreas is still a fun game and its poopy looking open world at least feels more alive than most open world games now. Hell, Max Payne 2's physics are still amazing. Ive been feeling like this current gen and last gen are not near the leap it was from ps2-ps3, xbox-360, or the gigantic leap ps1-ps2 was. Indie devs are the only ones doing different things but the companies that actually drive console generations are falling behind on innovation.

Mass Effect 1 is easily my favorite of the trilogy. The plot makes sense, you have an actual antagonist (sorry, Harbinger, but you're kind of awful), and it's less about the combat while being more about the universe. ME2 went for a more 3rd Person Shooter with some RPG character building and choices thrown in, along with the plot being more or less unimportant to the trilogy as a whole (preparing for the many fans who defend ME2 now). If I'm going to play an ME game again, it's going to be the first one.

I'm literally in another run right now. If this vid were made before the LE release, it might have had more credence. Also, it's not a 3rd person shooter, it's an RPG, so the cover system is so far down on the list of what's important. I revisit 1 and 2 a lot. I prefer 2, but completely agree that the main story and antagonist are nothing compared to 1. I like 2 for the characters and, oddly, optional stuff. The recruitment and loyalty missions in ME2 are A+ for me. But the story in ME1 is far superior.

I love it when people say games like Metroid and Legend of Zelda have "aged poorly" because of their maps or lack thereof. It's like they're completely unaware of the fact that we live in the age of the internet when you can just look up maps and hints as easy as anything. If anything, that actually makes the games EASIER to finish now than they were back in the day.

@@RHCole To me the difference between Morrowind and Oblivion is that I never really enjoyed Oblivion. There was a lot about that game that really took me out of it continuously, from the 'every face looks the same'-slider customization to the removal of some of my favorite weapon types, to the 'everything is voiced!'- claim meaning most of it was voiced poorly. I'll probably never get into Morrowind again, but the later games, while having some definite improvements all lost a lot of identity that Morrowind had. Some of that identity was probably frustrating (descriptions on how to get somewhere often not checking out, argonians and Khajjit not being able to wear boots or closed helmets, CLIFFRACERS) but every ES game after felt kinda bland and disappointing after. Vvardenfell was a weird place.

It's a list of games that are considered some of the best *ever* made, which usually causes one to assume they'll hold up over time. It's not not that far fetched a list. And it's okay that they don't hold up; it's because of them that games improved to the levels they've reached. And as mentioned, some old games really do hold up, which legitimizes a list of the ones that don't. I think the real problem is that people get so butt hurt over any mention that some of their favorite games don't age as well as they want them to. People need to accept it and realize that it doesn't make them any less historically great.
@Darthalas

@@sadowolf absolutely not, They are taking different series and going back to the original one and saying that it doesn't hold up many decades later to more advanced games. Graphics have gotten better, control schemes have changed, storytelling has evolved, that does not mean that these are bad games or that they don't hold up. This was a terrible premise and one of the few times that I, and many other people, have voted down on their videos. Breath of the wild is absolutely breathtaking and amazing, and literally made me say whoa multiple times in the first 20 minutes of play; That does not mean that I cannot go back and enjoy the challenge or appreciate what was created with the original Zelda. All games have bugs, plot issues, or general problems, That does not mean that they don't " hold up" or that they are otherwise bad games.

I've gone back and played every one of these games (except for Tomb Raider, Mass Effect and Metroid) within the last couple of years. I enjoyed playing every single one of them. We played Goldeneye on a Projector in the backyard last summer. We played for hours. I enjoy these games, and the old Sierra Online and LucasArts games so much.

For Legend of Zelda, manual PDFs are a thing. Odds are really good that you can find a free pdf of the manual with less than 2 minutes of googling around. Rest of it is pretty valid.

Disagree on Metroid. It was literally the first Nintendo game I played due to my Nintendo being an open box discount that had Metroid included at random instead om SMB/DH, and even replaying it last year on emulator it is still amaizing, with all the shortcuts, secret tunnels, enemies that seemed to have a bit of malicious spite in their ai instead of going exactly from one point to another and back. It truly holds up, and for the time was head and shoulders over anything else. There is a reason the games it inspirees are "Metroidvanias" instead of "Castelevoidias" or "Mariovanias" etc.

I have to agree with GTAIII, but my case is a different approach--I bought the OG trilogy in early 2021 when the PS Store games were given discounts, and I played (and 100%'d) all three games in chronological (in-universe) order, finishing by Christmas. Boy, GTAIII surely felt outdated from the get-go (although I'd already resigned to my fate) after playing through the advances that SA brought to the 3D games. Next time I tackle the trilogy, I will do this on chronological (release) order.

I do love lists that put nostalgia in check; people get so worked up over it haha. I get it, there are a couple here that I don't necessarily agree with personally, but when one considers something one of the "best ever made," many assume it's going to hold up over time. Some do, some don't, and it's okay to accept that and appreciate that they walked so other games could run. I've gone back and played most of the games on this list at one point or another, and most definitely didn't hold up for me. Doesn't mean they're any less great historically or that their reputations are tarnished, it's just a reminder that games evolve.

Agreed. I feel like people hold a lot of these older games - especially from the PS1 and PS2 era on such a high pedestal because of how much fun they had with them back in the day - but, for as much many of us complain about modern gaming, there are much better alternatives to many of the games listed that are technically and mechanically superior in every way. GTA 3 is a great example. It was revolutionary for the time, but nowadays it just feels like a rough and stiff blueprint for an open world game. You would be lying to yourself if you told me that GTA 3 has more interactivity and a better open world (not necessarily setting) than GTA 4, GTA 5, or RDR2.

It is interesting how games are like drugs in that they seem to cause tolerance, requiring better features, graphics and gameplay to get the same "oooh" feeling. I wish I could bottle that feeling I got the first time I heard Mario jump and sip it like fine scotch.

I was going to defend the Mass effect entry as I've logged over 1000hrs in the legendary edition since the spring. But then I remembered that I have so many mods installed that im not sure what the vanilla game is like any more(100+ per game, yes I have a problem and no I'm not going to fix it lol). It is still a fantastic game and even with 5+ runs I keep finding new details. Badass raptor sniper man is always my go to, usually after romancing the cardboard Kaidan so I can dump him.

I had to laugh at this list. Metroid? Zelda? Also, ME1 might have a frustrating combat system but storywise it's epic and hints at something massive that the third game can never live up to. Also, it has a whimsy and charm that I don't think they ever recaptured.

Some more games that qualify: MegaMan 1 Controls feel a bit off which makes the platforming annoying, the bosses feel a bit too random in their movements. Level design isn't great and they contain quite a few copy pasted rooms. Also if I'm not mistaken, if you miss an optional item in one of the stages and don't get it before going into the Wily stages you get stuck there and have to restart. I just got the legacy collection 1 and 2 and it's really noticeable just how the games get better. Soul Reaver It's really noticeable that at that point developers hadn't yet figured out how to best handle the camera in a 3d game, combined with a lot of platforming and quite a few sections are really frustrating. Additionally the combat becomes annoying really fast, it's a nice idea that you have to use a vampires weakness on most enemies to really kill most enemies, but the novelty wears off really fast and it's just irritating to fight anyone. The boss fights are ok, since they are mostly puzzles you have to figure out, not really fights.

They missed the ball on a few of these. Zelda is pretty routinely revisited by a lot of gamers, including speedrunning, swordless runs, etc... and it's still just a fun game to play. ME1 is also being replayed with the legendary edition. The cover system is definitely janky, but in ME1 it's definitely NOT all or nothing, given the more RPG style of combat, and the fact that you can beat the game never using the cover system at all.
