I know this is a little more complicated since there are millions of books not everyone reads, but maybe it could be a start of something different on your channel? I definitely recommend 'The five people you meet in heaven' by Mitch Albom. It's about Eddie, a wounded war veteran who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him, as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakes in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a destination. It's a place where your life is explained to you by five people, some of whom you knew, others who may have been strangers. One by one, from childhood to soldier to old age, Eddie's five people revisit their connections to him on earth, illuminating the mysteries of his ''meaningless'' life, and revealing the haunting secret behind the eternal question: ''Why was I here?'' I read it when I was younger and it was one of those books that really stayed with me. It's a pretty light read for a somewhat heavier subject, so if you can, definitely pick it up. :)

Jenn please read Snow Falling on Cedars! I think I recommended it to you a couple years ago! It's historical fiction about a Japanese American family in Washington state whose whole life is upended by the Japanese internment camps of WW2. That's really only part of the book though, as it is about how the dad came from Japan and made a prosperous life in America. His family rented and farmed land from a white family so the book is also about the relationship between those two families. It's a really famous book and I think you would love it!

I find it amazing & profound that the first book you named was The Untethered Soul because the first time I came across the book was an incident when a substitute teacher was reading it and as I passed by, I felt compelled to say something about the book. This very small remark or insignificant question, which I normally wouldn’t have ever done, led to a full on conversation, soon irrelevant to the novel, about the Universe, astrology, religion, existence, and just overall one of the best conversations I’ve ever had in my life. Ever since, I’d been meaning to read the book, and this video just sealed and assured me that I absolutely must. Thank you & much love, Jenn, you beautiful being!

Jenn, you are truly so inspiring. I read half of these books haha but I will look forward to read the ones that I haven’t read! Thank you so much for bringing up the “almost forgotten part” of korean and Japanese history. It is quite sad that we never got to deeply learn about the Japanese invasion of Korea even in world history class. History is somewhat being forgotten from many people in this advanced industrial society and I believe it is so important to bring it up. This is not a comment to spark a historical debate; I wanted to point out that although world history is vast and it is extremely hard to learn about every country’s history, I wish American schools taught us about the aftermath of the invasions or how inhumane the treatment were.

Tatiana Halley That’s rly cool! Your class seems rly fun I wish I can join in the conversations 😂

Hi Jenn! Since Pachinko is on your list, I would REALLY recommend that you check out Min Jin Lee’s first novel, “Free Food for Millionaires.” Stylistically, it is similar to Pachinko with the multiple perspectives and interconnected story lines, but it’s much more contemporary and set in 90s NYC. Lee weaves a very long and interesting tale that I think is still relevant for a lot of Asian Americans and young people more generally, because she discusses relationships, money, class, and just striving to make it in a competitive world (while also addressing facets of immigrant experiences and generational differences). I’d also note that as you said, Pachinko is wonderful in the awareness it brings to a part of history (colonial Korea) that is often overlooked internationally, and that I personally appreciated the spotlight on inter-Asia diasporas!

You should definitely read "Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on love and life from Dear Sugar" by Cheryl Strayed. She is the woman who wrote Wild, but this book is completely different. It is a collection from an advice column that she wrote in the early 2000's before she published Wild. My best friend gave me this book after my dad died in November and it changed my life. The advice in the book is applicable to anyone and is delivered with such wit that it made me smile during some of the hardest times of my life.
