I think this is a win for Jamie. For me a two meal £10 budget challenge is a “there’s a cost of living crisis and we need to make the pennies stretch”, so Mike not utilising the money to bulk out the bangers and mash and creating “food waste” by buying perishable items that he didn’t use is an instant third place. Out of Barry and Jamie, Jamie had the more substantial meals that would actually fill you up and he was, imo, smarter with his choice of ingredients.

You could have a cook off where instead of money, you could buy with time. Everyone starts with 1 Hr and the everything is priced in minutes.Whatever you buy you subtract that time from 1 Hr and that's the time you have left to cook Since most people are short on time and money, this would take care of people not having too much time. Hey Barry! Another tip for green onion ends, plunk them in water and they will regrow (2-3 times) as long as they have their roots. Keep them on your counter and change out the water every few days. Glad you've basically got rid of the store cupboard. You were way too generous with that in the past, including things like exotic spice blends and coconut oil. Salt, pepper, and olive or vegetable oil should be the only freebies IMO
@adamrobinson6951Ай бұрын
Sounds pedantic, but after the frozen food episode I would also add water as a specified free ingredient. I also wouldn't be opposed to allowing flour. It's a store cupboard staple, and so many recipes require using an insignificant amount of it to make a roux, dust a surface or similar. Besides, if someone goes to the effort of making bread or pasta from scratch they deserve the advantage the free flour gave them.
@scottmcintyre2809Ай бұрын
I always got the impression that their store cupboard was exactly that: whatever they happened to have left over in the studio cupboard from recent videos so it could get used up and not go to waste, and I'm fine with that, sometimes you've got a random odd ingredient kicking around your kitchen you can put into something else.
@jeromethiel4323Ай бұрын
Agreed. But i would substitute water for the olive oil. And flour is not a bad idea either, as it is dirt cheap anyway. Good olive oil isn't cheap. The freebies should be very restricted on a budget battle. However, allowing homegrown or harvested ingredients should also be allowed. People should be growing more of their own food. It's not that hard or that time consuming. Plus, it gets you out and touching grass, which people need more than they think they do.

Kind of wish I saw this before I went to the store earlier for a few more ideas. Spent about $52 for two weeks of groceries which consisted of some frozen veg, a bunch of pasta and pantry goods, some cheese and a few rotisserie chickens (some shops sell them as a loss leader, so if you can find them for cheap enough, you can break them down, bag and freeze the chicken in individual portions for cheaper than you would getting most raw chicken. It’s easier to prep too).
@dallasl3688Ай бұрын
Everyone knows Costco has the best whole rotisserie chickens at an amazing price. $3 to $5 cheaper than most supermarkets and far superior flavor. I'll usually buy one for a dinner, shred the leftover meat for another meal, and freeze the bones and carcass for making stock.
@Silentgrace11Ай бұрын
That is entirely fair. I picked mine up from Sam’s club but I didn’t want to imply that it can only be acquired from a bulk retailer since a membership can be a costly expense that not everyone has access to (thankfully my mom has one to keep up with my younger siblings’ voracious eating habits so I can use her spare card haha). While I can’t speak on the flavor profile from place to place, a lot of grocery stores are starting to jump on the bandwagon of loss leader rotisserie chickens, which is definitely handy with the cost of raw poultry rising. I have friends who swear by using Kroger rotisserie chickens, which is a grocery store franchise in the eastern US (my local store just personally doesn’t carry them).

The whole vs pre-chopped thing is a great example of the Disability Tax (or, as a lot of disabled people call it, the Crip Tax), in that a lot of disabled people are only able to feed ourselves nutritious meals because of the availability of pre-chopped fruit and veg. The result is that we have to spend more money for the same ingredients and we don't get to choose how they're chopped up. We're also limited to whichever fruits and veggies a given supermarket or green grocer has chosen to offer pre-chopped -- or whatever pre-chopped frozen options there are. Just one of the multitude of ways in which it's more expensive just to live as a disabled person.

Also, there's still a bunch of other work involved when using those devices. You still have to peel, core, remove pits, etc. and then also wash and dry something that has sharp blades. It's also really frustrating for most disabled people that others (usually abled people) will suggest the most obvious option as though we couldn't possibly have thought of it for ourselves. If it seems obvious and we're not already doing it, it's almost always going to be because it doesn't work for us. We are experts irt living in our bodies.

I love these challenges but I would love to see a realistic one for the poorest of us, where you makes meals for £1 or under per portion over 7 days (and not all soups ofc) touching on various dietry requirements. When you are looking at the fact so many people are using food banks it would be nice to see those of us that can not afford even £2.50'ish per portion. Maybe that should be another challenge, partner up with you local food bank and purchase what they give for any specific time period that they do (my local one is 4 days, one in town is 5 days etc) and produce 3 meals a day for the produce you would receive. Either are unfortunate realities of life now with 3.12 million using them, including of the 3.12 million 6% children, 1% pensioners and a staggering 3% of working adults Edit: since I last checked so long ago the number of people that use food banks has gone up

100% yes they need to do this. I can really stretch food but thats a learned skill which a lot of people just don't have...YET guys ..
@daphnetilling6034Ай бұрын
@@Psylaine64 I got so desperate to have healthy meals under a £1 per portion that took into account my diabetes that I ceated a spreadsheet with so many meals with 90% of them being £1 or under and freezable as I am single. But like you said it is a learned skill and has taken me a long time to get to this stage

I would love to find a menu for very very cheap, easy, healthy, tasty and varied meals. Am I asking for too much? I need to stretch my budget even further, but I haven’t been able to cook meals under US$4.00 per person in average.
@daphnetilling6034Ай бұрын
@@TheCatWitch63 I am not sure for US prices being from the UK but one thing I have learnt is taking a meat based recipe and replacing the meat with a vegetables or legume of some description. My most recent on is a chicken balti that i swapped the chicken for cauliflower. Tasted great as it was the exact flavours of the chicken one at a fraction of the cost plus maybe healthier. Soups, stews and currys are great for cheap meals that can be stretched out, also great for freezing

@@TheCatWitch63I end up using lots of eggs, and making lots of soup. Very budget friendly.

Now we need the chef version to see what Ben would do with the same £10! Someone should steal ingredients while he's buying too, to keep things fair. 😂

Convenient how when Ebbers is in a budget battle, it's "Herbs are free, they are grown here", but all of a sudden its "1.10 per pack of herbs"
@OrllivАй бұрын
To give him some credit though we do know that Ebbers grows a ton of his own ingredients both at home and on the allotment. Him taking herbs as a freebie I feel is warranted given if he was at home fresh herbs would very likely be free for him.

Often I forget how ridiculously hot it is in their studio, but every now and then an episode drops where they all look beet red and dehydrated. Keep drinkin that water boys

I'd give the win to Jamie as the main problem with his burger was the under cooked garlic which is a minor thing. Where as Barry and Mike shared ingredients. Specifically Barry's cream cheese and Mikes garam masala which they didn't pay for and Barry also used the end's of Mike's spring onions. First the curry paste in the Budget Challenge then Jamie's Chicken Stock in the Unplanned Rice Battle and now spring onions. Barry used to leave the hubs on now he seems to be nicking ingredients.

This is a good format, I love giving the normals new, harder challenges. I think here we saw them run into a wall a bit on their planning, even though there were lots of options they didn't form a plan out of the ingredients. Mikes was the most egregious of 'I don't know what I'm doing, I'll just keep buying more cheap stuff to prep and figure it out from there', and Jamie had a good idea in the start but ran into 'improvement creep' and failed to think things through (the garlic was a big mistake that was completely unenforced). Barry hit somewhere in the middle with his initial decent idea of a halloumi sandwich, but he didn't really have a plan for his second dish at all, and ended up just winging it and throwing his salvaged ingredients in there.

Really loved this ep! i think the critique at the end was really valuable and fair, would love for more like this! Could you do an R&D series where each normal has to conceptualize and then Research & Develop a dish? but show the iteration process and what they learn each iteration? Would be fascinating to see the tweaks along the way if they each work with a Chef!!

Pre--diced onions and etc are great for people who don't have the hand strength or dexterity to dice an onion. A lot of "convenience" foods are an absolute godsend for disabled people.
@nixi-bixiАй бұрын
Yes pre prepped is more expensive but there are ways to make it cheaper. Plus plenty of people have reasons for using the pre prepped ingredients. I have a mobility disability and my hands have issues too so I use gadgets and pre prepped when I can. Generally wouldn't buy the chiller version of the pre prepped items but I do use the frozen version. I live by myself so being able to just use what I need makes sense for food waste reasons too. Asda has the frozen from scratch range, 650g chopped white onions for £1.65, vegetable base mix aka mirepoix 600g for £.1.40, mixed sliced peppers 600g for £1,60, 700g of chopped butternut squash for £2.10 is a fav just for the sheer amount of effort i save in peeling, deseeding and chopping plus clean up! Maybe the boys could check out what pre prepared items are "worth it", with an eye on disability as well as time/convenience? Don't forget the freezer section!
@o0superflu0oАй бұрын
Frozen veggies, herbs, etc. are a real life saver! I love cooking and am not disabled, but depression can make it hard to care for myself at times. Knowing I can whip something healthy up within minutes without much work or clean up is great. Any extra cost (often none) is a price I'm very willing to pay.
@lynnsibley1172Ай бұрын
I keep whole onions and frozen diced on hand, because even without the extra challenge of disability sometimes I'm just too tired to chop an onion. Same with a few healthy-ish frozen/premade options - still cheaper than takeout on days when making dinner feels overwhelming!
@csmitty3517Ай бұрын
I always love these challenges because it shows the difference in food prices from the UK to where I live. For those who don't know, parts of the UK has almost a 12 month growing season for cold hardier veg. Also it doesn't get so hot that it'll scorch or cause other veg to bolt. Compare that to the US where it's too cold/too hot 4 months minimum out of the year.
