Kush and Ebbers, like all great chefs, have an inner grandma who survived war times by (guerilla) gardening, reusing, stretching ingredients and preserving. That's at the core of a successful kitchen. It is also the reason why I think the guys should get a small lot (like an oversized allotment) in the country and do regular shows from there cooking and preserving what's in season and letting their inner grannies out.

Video idea: Recipe whispers! One of the team makes a dish and then tells one of the others the list of ingredients and how to prepare it. He tells the next team member and so on. Then the last member of the team has to make the dish as well with the information he received and in the end you compare how similar/different the dishes are. You could workshop the format a bit, but I think it would be fun to see how much information goes out the window when it's passed on.

@Miltroit3 ай бұрын
oh, I like this and I'll add a possible twist. It's a two dish meal (like grilled cheese and tomato soup) and the chefs draw straws/spin wheel, whatever, for which will be unlimited and which is 5 pound. Then the taster(s) picks where the money went for each pair of dishes. Could also do with time instead of money. One dish gets 10 min, the other gets 30 min or something.

Maybe limiting things that include only what you can actually buy in a supermarket, yes I know things come from their garden or were made a year ago, but some of us dont even have a garden lol. Also maybe the normals could use the same ingredients the chef uses, but a version more expensive of that item, so for example if the chef is using a very cheap meat, the normal would get the best cut of meat you can get your hands on. Wow. Loved this video. Kush's toastie even seemed achievable as well as affordable. Liked seeing what he did with the ingredients at that price point., while also giving Barry tips on how to recover from over-salting the onions, and providing examples of what he'd have done with a little more money to elevate it. I'd have liked to have seen what Barry could have done without an unlimited budget, so he couldn't just throw everything at it, but then him not getting the time to plan showed in that way. I liked Mike suggesting something pickled for the sandwich to brighten it up, which was a great tip for counteracting the fact. And best of all was Jamie's judging, where he judged Kush's sandwich as one-dimensional for all that it was good, managed to pick out Barry's sandwich, explained how he knew it was Barry's, and then went back for another bite of Barry's sandwich after he'd tasted Kush's. I liked this challenge, it was the perfect blend of cooking knowledge, cooking something achievable, good tips, and fun chaos. I would like to see more low-budget challenges,

One of the things that always gets me about these is all the "free" ingredients. Oil is not free. Herbs are not free. Most people didn't grow and ferment peppers last year. Just up the budget and don't say that all these other things are free when you have to buy them too.

I 100% agree. A lot of people don't even have the space to grow things like that. Perhaps one or two Herbs in a Windows sill at most
@user-hn9oy9jt6w3 ай бұрын
You buy a herb once and keep it alive for years, use it hundreds of times. It comes up to a cost of like 0.00001 pence per use. It's basically free, although not literally free. Criticizing considering oil or salt as a free ingredient is a more valid point, but it also would make for a boring video if Kush had to use his £5 on a £5 bottle of oil...

@@user-hn9oy9jt6w Literally 0.00001% of the population has lactose fermented peppers at home for free. Keeping plants alive and healthy indefinitely takes nutrients and soil and is not free. Make focaccia in an oven is not just "flour" and is not free. this is an asinine take.

Kush's ingredients had quite a few caveats that would not apply or be readily available to most 'normal' home cooks on a limited budget. Its 'free' or 'costs' nothing because he made it x amount of time ago seems not entirely in the spirit, I would have loved to see how Kush would have tackled this without things like a home made sour dough starter he had etc!
@chandrawong4493 ай бұрын
Sour dough starter is made from flour and water and wild yeast. They will live forever if properly cared for. He paid for the flour for the bread. Water, salt, pepper, and oil are always 'free' in these - so what exactly do you want him to pay for? 1/4 of flour used in the starter? He'd just reduce the flour in the focaccia. Ben has used allotment herbs and produce for 14 years. This is the jalapenos and herbs are home grown. They may not be entirely free, but per seed they practically are - plus he made eight sammies and not just one.
@alex22173 ай бұрын

Isn't half of Kush's stuff cheating? The bread, arguably half the dish, isn't included in the price so not really playing by the rules. Appreciate it's a bit of fun but I'd like to see these challenges being something someone on a budget could recreate and it's very unlikely they will have a sour dough starter just laying around.

The starter is not really the issue as that is just an alternative to a spoonful of yeast which has a negligible cost. The flour used to make the bread ( no idea where he got a bag of flour for 50p it is considerably more in the shops near me) on the other hand along with the time and fuel costs to make it do add up quickly and should of been counted towards the cost.

Using home-grown herbs and home-made focaccia and preserves sounds pretty well exactly how my mother would have tried to stretch her extremely limited household budget, so I don't understand why commenters are taking issue with Kush doing the same. It's probably what I'd do, too, assuming I had the sourdough starter.

Kush is such a great teacher. Never miss a moment to give a lesson, never make them feel bad about a mistake.

I've loved watching the growth of the normals, though I daresay they have surpassed many that call themselves chefs. Good thing your chefs are true masters of their craft.

Think telling Barry he has "too much" was undermining. Also noticed Baz picked cheeses that likely melt poorly, without Kush cautioning about that. The salt advice was just to prevent kitchen waste rather than necessarily helping Barry.

As of typing this we are in Fall, so it's the best time for a Chef vs Normal, High vs Low budget Chili battle.
