Next up in the cancelled games series, we're taking a look at twenty-five (well, technically twenty-eight) unreleased GBA games. What a great handheld, and there are some fantastic looking games in this list, and from many different genres so there's something here for everyone.
I hope you all enjoy it!
All background music from Iridion II on GBA.
Check out the rest of my cancelled games series here:

Hi, I was the artist on Shining Star. Its indeed a shame the game never saw the light of day, but it suffered from less than good product management, and as you said, a console at end of life. The whole point of the game was to show AI adjusting its strategy (placement of the red guys) according to the players position on the level. Thanks for the feature and the kind words to the art. It was indeed inspired both on metal slug and advanced wars. at the time, my favorite game to play.

Oh wow, good job! It really does look gorgeous. Shame it was never released.I love Advance Wars too, I've been playing Advance Wars 2 solidly every night lately (big session last night). Thanks so much for stopping by!

Every time I'm reminded of the Game Boy Advance I'm amazed at how powerful it is. There are really good games available for it and it's a good system to collect for. But for some reason the good old game boy get relegated to the shelf. Still, I'm glad to have a few of them including some good games. Well done Pete. I know the research for the videos is a lot of work.

The Game Boy Advance was the demise of the Wonderswan Color. Outside of Japan, The Game Boy Advance was a spiritual localization of that system.

I find it pretty interesting Shantae as a Series stayed afloat... If it wasn't for the 2010 release (Which luckily got a publisher) hen we wouldn't have seen Shantae ever again due to the Original one tanking in sales deterring publishers from Two complete games (Risky Revolution and Risky Waters.. Its such a shame but I guess it actually got to escape death... many series cant say they escape death... (Of course Games like Fire Emblem can... but series such as Chibi Robo, F-Zero, etc all are dead)
@onaretrotip

Yep though I could understand developers not being confident in the games after the first one was a commercial (but not critical) bomb.. but if it wasn't I believe Shantae would be much more popular than what it is today. Course I didn't know much about any of the other games on your list so thanks very much for giving such wonderful information :)

@rontheauraknight9606 3 жыл бұрын
@@pferreira1983 well it was one of those games that wasn’t a commerical success but a critical success... maybe they thought a second try on a newer console (the original Shantae released like a month or so before the GBA on the Color) so maybe try again on a newer console and not on the direct tail end of the previous generation However I guess that idea got scrapped or not enough budget in it... and maybe was halted until the DS game was created

Awesome list! It's crazy to look back at stuff like this, because frankly, GBA sprite art beats the pants off of so many indie titles' today when it comes to sprite art. There's far too much "minimalist artsy" crap now, that barely look like they'd push an Atari 2600, and it completely chokes out people who _can_ produce and animate wonderful stuff (dooming far too much stuff like _Mystik Belle_ or _Strikey Sisters_ to obscurity). But back then, *every* studio were interested in pushing sprite art _forward_ as hard as they could. Just to stand out against the excellent work in games like _Mega Man Zero 2_ or _Sonic Advance 3_ . When the "B Tier" obscure games were as good looking as _Sigma Star Saga, Lady Sia, Rebelstar Tactical Command, Iridion 2_ or _Scurge: Hive_ , you know you're spoiled for sprite art :P Still, all that stiff competition means games that couldn't cut it or couldn't find a publisher, and a lot that didn't put up amazing sales numbers, so of course a list like this could be assembled. Nice job highlighting some impressive stuff for the platform! The GBA has just a stupid amount of unreleased, incredibly promising looking titles judging by the amount of stuff catalogued on places like unseen64, so I really dig shining the spotlight on so many promising games If/when you do another one of these, you should include Bits Studios' _Wizards_ , the sequel to the uber-impressive GBC real time strategy game they did that Nintendo (for some reason) never picked up. Feel bad for that team - they did nothing but make good games, but Nintendo only published _Warlocked_ . They gave up on _Riqa_ on N64, then _Wizards_ , and now you show me _Jet Riders_ ? Jeez - why did Nintendo suddenly turn their backs on that studio (heck, the entire European development scene really, judging from their sale of Rare) so hard? Dummies.
@onaretrotip
@onaretrotip 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks dude! Totally agree; the GBA's sprite art is gorgeous. I was really surprised by the number of unreleased GBA games. Sometimes it's a struggle to find enough interesting ones, but in this case it was hard narrowing it down to just twenty-five. And often the games on these lists are mostly terrible, with one or two promising titles, but here there are so many that look fantastic. What a shame. I'll definitely do a Game Boy and GBC video (together or separately depending on whether I can find enough interesting titles). Thanks so much for watching!

Sigma Star Saga featured some connections with Shantae 2 Risky Revolution, it was mainly made because of Shantae as Namco wanted a new IP instead of publishing Shantae 2, the 20+ hours of gameplay Shantae 2 was planned to have, the explosion GFX. eventually in 2009 thanks to digital downloads WayForward can finally self publish Risky's Revenge for DSiWare, born from the ashes of Shantae 2 Risky Revolution. Eventually the closest thing we got was Risky's Revenge and Half Genie Hero combined as both reuse pieces from the cancelled GBA game

Bullshiryo Dims Gekido for GBC was a really cool cancelled game, Naps Team revealed the demo back in 2017 on Facebook and wow the big sprites, the fluid animation, really impressive game for GBC but it waa cancelled due to bad timing with the GBA and lack of publisher interest. The GBC version of Densetsu no Stafy which graphically looked really good but it was cancelled because it jumped ship on the GBA

onaretrotip Densetsu no Stafy for GBC is exactly the same game as the GBA version, but honestly the GBC version seems more fitting since is meant for that platform Oh and I forgot to mention Jet Force Gemini and Banjo-Kazooie Grunty's Curse Banjo-Kazooie Grunty's Curse sadly never surpassed the concept stages, it would be interesting to see how the game looked like in action but I'd imagine the game to be similiar to Conker's Pocket Tales

Just a bit of trivia here, the 16 bit Phantom 2040 game was based on a somewhat obscure 1990s American cartoon that attempted to do a futuristic take on the charecter. Despite it getting good critical reviews it wasn't very popular, possibly due to the fact that it's story lines and tone were rather "adult" but it was still marketed towards kids. Fans of cartoons often cite it as ahead of it's time.

Mate, I always have the Defenders of the Earth theme tune in my head. That Dune game looks like it's using voxel rendering for its terrain. I don't think I've seen any GBA games do that. That's pretty impressive. Also, i'm pretty sure Gods on GBA got real close to release. I swear there was previews of it and even video footage. I never got on with Gods for some reason but Magic Pockets on GBA would have been right up my alley.

You're welcome. also, do you know a game called Qwak? it was a BBC Micro game that was later ported to the Amiga,but it wasn't too popular, however that doesn't mean Qwak was bad, its a fun game and i just discovered that it was actually ported to the GBA,sadly no publisher had interest publishing the port, but unlike those canceled GBA ports of Amiga games,Qwak was actually released as an unlicensed GBA game, though only 300 copies were made,and you had to go to the dev.'s site to buy it. i thought it was facinating since the creator of the game really tried to get it out there.

Huh, I actually remember reading an overview of how _Shin'en Racer_ worked technologically - it's 3D, but top-down 3D - a good few years ago. If I owned a publishing company I'd definitely try to have _Odema and the Magic Book_ finished and released... Besides that, I think _Shantae Advance_ (for its art) and _GP Advance_ (for its technology) and the games I'd most like to play from this list.

I had a feeling you were going to mention Gods for Desolate World, there's no getting away from it, even the animation's the same. I could almost imagine that it was built with the same game engine, either that or the devs are just massive Bitmap Bros fans. It's a shame Chaos Engine didn't make it either, I could see that being great on the GBA. I'm not sure I'm too disappointed that the Flashback game was canned, with the new colour palette it looks like it could've lost the eerie but familiar alien world vibe that it got with the pastel shades. The screenshots made it look a bit too stylised, closer to something like Rayman. Yeah, I think Odema would've been up my street as well, shame that one bit the dust, it's exactly the sort of game that would be going for big bucks now though. I'd be interested to know why that one was canned, maybe it was a mix of too many styles that made it a tricky sell, a bit sci-fi, fantasy and steam punk. I'd be up for playing Jet Riders as well, I definitely get the Micro Machines vibe, the water stages were always my favourites.
@onaretrotip
@onaretrotip 6 жыл бұрын
Oh, absolutely. The similarities are so exact - the movements, pace, graphics, everything! I agree, The Chaos Engine would have been great on the GBA. Totally agree on Flashback as well; it just doesn't feel like a Flashback game, it's too colourful. So gutted about Odema, it looks fantastic. I love both genres that the game features (run & gun and shooter), and it would've suited the GBA well. Jet Riders looks cool, and I like the look of Motocross Challenge. Thanks for watching, Owen!

I think that regardless of the system some of these unreleased games that will never see the light of day should either be sold or just put out there if there is any type of working prototype. And the source code should be released so that up-and-coming video game makers maybe kids out of school or what have you can work on it to finish the game and you will have a rom that you can play on emulators. are a custom cartridge can be made as long as there is an agreement that it will not be sold for any type of financial gain because a lot of these games I've seen in your series of videos or not so well but there are a lot that we're really good and I wouldn't personally love to see them see the light of day somehow.

Voan Siam - Final Fantasy III did get release under the moniker Final Fantasy VI: Advance. Unless you are talking about Final Fantasy III that was not released in the US until the 3D Remake called Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS. Other than that, I am confused why you listed FFIII.
@VOAN
@VOAN 6 жыл бұрын
*NYCJoeBlack* At one point Square Enix did considered planning to remake the true FFIII to GBA which they were unable to for the Wonder Swan Color. My guess is that they move the project to the DS instead since development for the game would be release too late for the system anyways. I am glad that they ported FFIV, V, and VI to GBA, I just don't get use to the new localization compare to the SNES.
