It's important to note that Williams was worried about that happening, and tried to prevent it. It was in his contract that Disney is not to use Williams name prominently in advertising to sell the movie. Disney broke contract anyway. I believe Williams successfully sued Disney for it, but by then, the damage was done.

"Unfortunately, what Gene meant by "Let's shoot it two ways" was that we'd shoot the Kirk/Uhura kiss twice. In the first take, we'd actually kiss on camera and in the second, Nichelle and I would turn our bodies as we embraced, so that my back was to the camera long before our lips would have ever touched. We'd give the illusion of kissing without ever touching lips. Sadly, when push came to shove, the network got their way and the no-contact kiss made it to the airwaves. For that reason, the widely held assumption that Star Trek features the first interracial kiss in the history of television is absolutely untrue." William Shatner - "Star Trek Memories", 1993, page 285.

@@pakde8002 I have the book in hardback and that quote has stuck in my memory as a piece of Trek trivia since I first read it. The book is interesting if you're a ST:TOS fan. Interestingly enough, I can find no description of the debacle surrounding "the kiss" in "Inside Star Trek : The Real Story" (1996) by Herbert Solow and Robert Justman. Of course, I could have just missed it since I haven't read that book all the way through, but it's indexed so it should be easy to find the pages related to whatever you're looking for. If you know of any sources that contradict Shatner's recollection I'd be interested in reading them.

Wot, no Mike Oldfield? He was the launch artist for the Virgin Records label and his record, Tubular Bells, was of course a big seller. Executives at the label were very insistent he release a sequel to this album, but in revenge Oldfield deliberately made an album, Amarok, from which it would be impossible to extract a radio-friendly single- and even included morse code that spelled out his opinion of Richard Branson. And, in his final two-fingered act to Virgin, the first album released under a new deal with Warner Records was... Tubular Bells II.

Doing [that] so in frigging _Morse Code_ would've been (and *was* quite obviously) pure-tee *GENIUS* especially to do so on a record, knowing it'd merely lead to *1)* either people asking what it meant, or *2)* researching to find out on their own accord exactly just what [if anything] it meant. 🤔

You should be more specific. The first interracial kiss on the stage, films or TV? American entertainment or other? I think it's safe to say it was the first interracial romantic deep and lusty full mouth kiss on camera on an American nationwide prime time television series. 😂 Even as a kiss between a white man and woman it would have been scandalous for the time because it was so hot.

It wasn't the first televised interracial kiss, it was the first televised kiss between a black person and a white person. Not only was that not Star Trek's first interracial kiss, it wasn't even Shatner's first. Earlier in the series, he kissed an Asian actress. Before Star Trek, Shatner kissed a different Asian woman on a separate show. I can't recall what the show was, but I believe it was some kind of talk show, or maybe game show. Nonetheless, it's still an iconic moment in American history.

Their show Winx Club demolished Disney's W.I.T.C.H., so the House of Mouse sued them with the claim that "magical girls with wings" was a specific enough concept that Winx ripped off their show. Too bad they didn't know that Winx had been pitched (as a pilot) about a year or so before W.I.T.C.H. was a thing, though some elements/characters in Winx were removed or drastically reduced to appease Disney despite Rainbow 100% winning the case.

I have to correct you on one point Simon. The kiss between Uhura and Kirk in Plato's Stepchildren was not the first interracial kiss on TV, or on Star Trek. The episode is in season 3, back in season 1 the episode Mirror Mirror had Kirk kiss a Filipino woman playing Lt. Marla McGivers. Then too there were seceral years of Lucille Ball & Desi Arnez kissing on TV, as Lucille was the owner and boss of Desilu (named for her and Arnez) and gave Star Trek the green light to go into production it's not an unimportant point. Finally a full 10 years before Plato's Stepchildren the first interracial kiss on American TV happened on The Ed Sullivan Show, weirdly it also featured William Shatner.

Uhm, mostly European Hispanics don't count. Where I come from, they are white. Even a ch*l* is white if the woman he wants to marry is a Slavic Catholic. It's different if she's an Anglo Protestant. Mixed race Pacific Islanders are white too. Many mixed people of African descent are white. My mixed-race grandmother was white. My mother was white as hell. And I have no claim on black culture because not even my grandmother had it. I can tell you that none of those other kisses were perceived as interracial. But Kirk and Uhura was. A few stations declined to air the episode, including a station in nearby Beaumont.

@@Bacopa68 Filipino is Asian, not hispanic, nor white, Desi Arnez was hispanic, but not "mostly white" he was a bit mixed, which makes him an interracial individual like Bruce Lee, again not white. Those facts aside all of these are acknoledged as preceeding examples of on screen interratial relationships, as are several that appeared in UK TV before Plato's Stepchildren. Seriously look it up for yourself, you can find all of these listed in articles on the subject on numerous sites, heck over on Trekculture they did a whole video including Plato's Stepchildren of things people mistakenly believe about star trek, and it has been documented very well at this point.

@@Bacopa68 So by the way, I'm Lakota, this is my legal racial identity in the US, so are my children, and so will be my grandchildren. My ancestry also includes English, Irish, Norwegian, Cherokee, Spanish, Danish, German, French, & Scottish. I am not treated "like I'm white" in my own home town, I had a gun stuck in my face by a cop because my alternator belt broke in negative 13 F and I was trying to get home before the car died cause my kid was in the car. But hey my own tribe treats me like crap too so we're all human. Just another note, many of the mentioned on screen interracial moments were protested and blocked from airing in some areas as well, and no, especially not back in the 50s and 60s just after hundreds of thousands of asian americans (including later Star Trek actor George Takei) were rounded up by the US government and put in camps just because they were asian, no people did not see asians as white.
