Back in the mid 1980s, I was on a bike trail, I was in an open valley where the trail ran next to a stream. Most of the trail is hilly and treed, this was the only open area, say a quarter mile long and flat. Riding along, I hear something like a chainsaw motor, sputtering and getting louder by the second. I stopped and looked back and here comes an pusher ultra-light, a few feet off the ground and heading right for me. I hit the pedals and rode off the trail, hoping I was clear of the craft, I was. It landed, the engine had become a mere sputter by now, the pilot got out, immediately started tinkering with the engine and we chatted a bit. In a matter of minutes, he flipped the prop and the engine came to life, strapped back in his machine, gave me a thumbs up and off he went, no sputtering this time.

Love the safety message! Someone should never try to fly any plane without some ground training. I am not trying to impose any requirements on pilots. Just hope no one gets killed trying to fly an ultralight.
@pinwizz692 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct. The leading ultralight owners org in America recommends 10 hours flight training in a 2 place version that does require a modified pilots license under rge sport aircraft category. You can't attend any of their events without certification you've done so by a qualified flight trainer. I myself would love to own a Buccaneer ultralight as I'm a Veteran Coast Guard Aviation Machinist Mate 3d who was a Flt. Mechanic on Grumman HU16e Albatross seaplanes in the mid 70's. I loved the smell of AvGas and oil burning in the morning as that first puff of smoke belched outta the stacks.

They reccomend that even with Paramotors and those are basically parachutes, so you just glide down if the engine quits. The King of Random's (pretty popular science youtube channel back in the day) OG host died in a paramotor accident. So the addage 'never fly higher than you're willing to fall' does hold here.
@allegorx58 Жыл бұрын
@@DFX2KX wth kind of adage is that lol okay i’ll fly at altitude of 7ft max
@DFX2KX Жыл бұрын
@@allegorx58 Well, great way to miss the whole POINT of that adage but go off I guess. That specifically relates to flying ultralights *without training*. If you're willing to *fly* higher than that, you're willing to *fall* from higher than that because you've accepted the risks that come with aviation. You can (and should) take every safety precaution you can, but at the end of the day, The ground is hard and gravity is unforgiving. Equipment failure, mistakes, and just plain bad luck are all risks you have to be comfortable with before you go flying. When you do so *without any training* even when it's legal to do so, you're taking (and accepting, because ignorance is no excuse) risks you won't even know about.

Hey Jimmy. I started flying when I was 13, all paid for by me working at the airport. By the time I took my checkride when I turned 17, I had over 400 hrs. I stayed with it a few more years and during those years I built (not alone) 3 ultra lights but one was technically an airplane. They were Rotec Rallys. A 2B, a Sport and a Rally 3. Awesome aircraft designed by the brilliant but maybe a little unhinged Bill Adaska. In my opinion they were the safest ultralights ever built and I can tell you stories why this is true. The internet is too young to know the truth Just wondering why they didn't make your list but love your content. You continue to remind me why I loved flying
@Dunriteproducts2 жыл бұрын
Actually "technically" they were all airplanes since an ultralight is merely a term used to classify airplanes that are under a particular weight and cruising speed but i know you already know that but just couldn't resist the temptation to comment lol. Everytime I see something about ultralights or "light sport aircraft", or, freedom when it comes to flying, I always think of this unknown guy in Las Vegas, NV., that had his own (unofficial) airport in his backyard, called Barton Field... I believe he did have one ultralight, but he mostly had single-engined (real) aircraft, and the occasional Bell 47, and at one point, two runways, with one (the street in front of his house) later paved. The punchline was, he was less than 2 miles from McCarran International, and inline with one of the runways!!! Seems the city was constantly replacing street sign posts on his street, as some wiseguy would cut the posts down & post the signs low, so that aircraft wings could pass over them! He even had the name "Barton Field" painted on the roof of a "hangar" (a steel building on the property): looked like something right out of the Little Rascals! I don't believe he even had a pilot or an A&P license, but in photos, you can tell he was wrenching on planes...think he had a total of 5 or 6 based there, at the height of its heyday. The "airport" is closed now, unfortunately, but not because of the FAA meddling with it, but because land values skyrocketed to the point that somebody made him (or her) an offer they couldn't refuse. You can find info on the place online. Wonder whatever happened to that guy...or gal...

2:09 in the US that is... Here in Soviet canuckistan you need 50 hours of total flight time and it costs between 6-10k to get the ultralight license, and you can upgrade it so you can fly with a passenger for around an extra 3,000 dollars and 10 hours of total flight time(after the 50 of the original license of course). PPL holders automatically hold the ultralight license as well, but it is recommended to get additional training.

I have to point out a correction for your comment about the Fisher UL aircraft being out of production. While the FP101 model is out of production, the Fisher FP202 is the replacement for that earlier version and IS a currently available ultralight. Factory support from Fisher is good and they've been a stable company for many decades. Not a lot of UL companies can say that. FWIW: I picked up my 80% finished FP202 from Craigs List about a month ago for $2000 (was listed at $3500). A Rotax 503 single carb engine and ballistic chute came with it for that price. It came with everything to finish the aircraft into flying condition except for the engine mount. And here's another little UL knowledge nugget for you: If you add a ballistic chute to your UL, the FAA gives you a weight credit for the addition of that type of safety device. Ask Pastor Jim to peruse the holy book of FAR and I'm sure he'll find it in section 103. I don't remember the weight allowance, but it's slightly more than an average ballistic chute IIRC.

Ive owned a host of cheap airplanes, my very first airplane (turned out to be anything but cheap in recurring medical and rebuild costs) I bought with pocket money at 15 was an Eagle XCR, a cross country development of the American Aerolights Double Eagle - a beautiful contraption with a massive swept fabric wing, end plate fins, a big ole stab canard upfront and a Cayuna 430 for power, control was a combination of swinging in the harness (weight shift) and motorcycle handle rudder control, steering on the ground was by dragging a foot! The hand crafted wood prop was a true thing of beauty, flew well but wandered left or right and took forever to respond to the drag rudder inputs - hence the crashes, one crash was from being blown upside down while sitting on the runway! I had a MAC CDL, also a local version of the Quicksilver side by side, a very rugged machine I enjoyed immensely and I have had a few powered hang glider/trike type contraptions all before I got into real airplanes of the Vans variety.

Another very cool ultralight was the Lazair. It's a twin-engine design, with an inverted V tail, and the surface coverings were a transparent plastic-type material. Others that I lusted after include the American Eagle, the Goldwing (not to be confused with the motorcycle), and the Pterodactyl Ascender. Man, those were the days.

A friend had a two place Challenger and I flew with him for 12 hours, UL's behave much differently than Cherokee 140s. In all, I put 240 hours on it before selling it. Flying open cockpit, stick and rudder is the only way to fly for me. I have about 20 hours in other UL air vehicles. Jimmy, I am a deacon in a southern baptist church and I've got to say that your Pastor Jim routine is hilarious! Can I get a witness?

Reminds me of the joke about the pastor on a flight with a look of fear on his face white knuckled to the arm rest of his seat. The flight attendant walks by and sees this and asks if the pastor is OK. He says no I'm not OK but I will be once this plane is back on the ground. The flight attendant then says "I thought you being a pastor would feel closer to The Almighty God up here pastor?" The pastor replied "the good book says, lo I will be with you always."

In Spain, ultralight aircraft does indeed need license. But we are talking about 450Kg MTOW planes (soon to be 600Kg) using Rotax engines with even more than 100hp so they can be really fast. Tecnam, Alto, SkyLeader, Land Africa... There's a lot of 3rd generation ultralight aircraft with metal body and the full package.

Kawasaki 440 was the same engine my dad had in his snowmobile in 1980. He had an Invader 440. That's pretty cool.

This rig would be great with more power ( 70 + HP engine) and maybe a bit beefier air frame. What fun ya could have with this little Jen. But be sure the water is really calm or you could have any issue .no white caps my boy!

I think this possibly one of your best tube vids..... I reckon Pastor Jimmy should have been wearing shorts with his suit. Love this stuff!!! Thanks for the entertainment.

I've seen a cub in Alaska take off in about 10ft haha. It was pretty windy that day though. Maybe 20 mph winds.

Just remember that Not all Countries allow people to fly these aircraft without a licence. In Australia for example, you must first obtain a Student Pilot Certificate issued by Recreational Aviation Australia (RA-Aus). Also with a temporary RA-Aus membership you can receive up to three hours dual instruction prior to the need to apply for a Student Pilot Certificate.

The adventura was fun, I flew one into oshkosh for the airshow one year. It’s weird being a pusher and tail wheel. If you advance the throttle fast the tail wheel pops off the ground and you have little to no steering.
