Back in the mid 1980s, I was on a bike trail, I was in an open valley where the trail ran next to a stream. Most of the trail is hilly and treed, this was the only open area, say a quarter mile long and flat. Riding along, I hear something like a chainsaw motor, sputtering and getting louder by the second. I stopped and looked back and here comes an pusher ultra-light, a few feet off the ground and heading right for me. I hit the pedals and rode off the trail, hoping I was clear of the craft, I was. It landed, the engine had become a mere sputter by now, the pilot got out, immediately started tinkering with the engine and we chatted a bit. In a matter of minutes, he flipped the prop and the engine came to life, strapped back in his machine, gave me a thumbs up and off he went, no sputtering this time.

My uncle bought a brand new drifter from Queensland back in the early 90's. (From memory). Flew it from the factory in Qld, back to Woomera in South Australia where he lived (with a retired American fighter pilot who was stationed at Woomera). They drove to Qld together, my uncle purchased the plane, then flew it back (took it in turns, one was flying, the other drove).

Love the safety message! Someone should never try to fly any plane without some ground training. I am not trying to impose any requirements on pilots. Just hope no one gets killed trying to fly an ultralight.
@pinwizz69
@pinwizz69 2 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct. The leading ultralight owners org in America recommends 10 hours flight training in a 2 place version that does require a modified pilots license under rge sport aircraft category. You can't attend any of their events without certification you've done so by a qualified flight trainer. I myself would love to own a Buccaneer ultralight as I'm a Veteran Coast Guard Aviation Machinist Mate 3d who was a Flt. Mechanic on Grumman HU16e Albatross seaplanes in the mid 70's. I loved the smell of AvGas and oil burning in the morning as that first puff of smoke belched outta the stacks.

They reccomend that even with Paramotors and those are basically parachutes, so you just glide down if the engine quits. The King of Random's (pretty popular science youtube channel back in the day) OG host died in a paramotor accident. So the addage 'never fly higher than you're willing to fall' does hold here.

@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX Жыл бұрын
@@allegorx58 Well, great way to miss the whole POINT of that adage but go off I guess. That specifically relates to flying ultralights *without training*. If you're willing to *fly* higher than that, you're willing to *fall* from higher than that because you've accepted the risks that come with aviation. You can (and should) take every safety precaution you can, but at the end of the day, The ground is hard and gravity is unforgiving. Equipment failure, mistakes, and just plain bad luck are all risks you have to be comfortable with before you go flying. When you do so *without any training* even when it's legal to do so, you're taking (and accepting, because ignorance is no excuse) risks you won't even know about.

Hey Jimmy. I started flying when I was 13, all paid for by me working at the airport. By the time I took my checkride when I turned 17, I had over 400 hrs. I stayed with it a few more years and during those years I built (not alone) 3 ultra lights but one was technically an airplane. They were Rotec Rallys. A 2B, a Sport and a Rally 3. Awesome aircraft designed by the brilliant but maybe a little unhinged Bill Adaska. In my opinion they were the safest ultralights ever built and I can tell you stories why this is true. The internet is too young to know the truth Just wondering why they didn't make your list but love your content. You continue to remind me why I loved flying
@Dunriteproducts
@Dunriteproducts 2 жыл бұрын
Actually "technically" they were all airplanes since an ultralight is merely a term used to classify airplanes that are under a particular weight and cruising speed but i know you already know that but just couldn't resist the temptation to comment lol. Cool hobby though. Takes a certain type of person to be an ultralight pilot\builder as im sure you probably know what i mean 😂

I first saw an ultralight back in the early 80s. I became sort of obsesses. The Sunburst was one of my favorites due to the inverted V tail and the brilliant fabric colors. Another very cool ultralight was the Lazair. It's a twin-engine design, with an inverted V tail, and the surface coverings were a transparent plastic-type material. Others that I lusted after include the American Eagle, the Goldwing (not to be confused with the motorcycle), and the Pterodactyl Ascender. Man, those were the days.

2:09 in the US that is... Here in Soviet canuckistan you need 50 hours of total flight time and it costs between 6-10k to get the ultralight license, and you can upgrade it so you can fly with a passenger for around an extra 3,000 dollars and 10 hours of total flight time(after the 50 of the original license of course). PPL holders automatically hold the ultralight license as well, but it is recommended to get additional training.

Everytime I see something about ultralights or "light sport aircraft", or, freedom when it comes to flying, I always think of this unknown guy in Las Vegas, NV., that had his own (unofficial) airport in his backyard, called Barton Field... I believe he did have one ultralight, but he mostly had single-engined (real) aircraft, and the occasional Bell 47, and at one point, two runways, with one (the street in front of his house) later paved. The punchline was, he was less than 2 miles from McCarran International, and inline with one of the runways!!! Seems the city was constantly replacing street sign posts on his street, as some wiseguy would cut the posts down & post the signs low, so that aircraft wings could pass over them! He even had the name "Barton Field" painted on the roof of a "hangar" (a steel building on the property): looked like something right out of the Little Rascals! I don't believe he even had a pilot or an A&P license, but in photos, you can tell he was wrenching on planes...think he had a total of 5 or 6 based there, at the height of its heyday. The "airport" is closed now, unfortunately, but not because of the FAA meddling with it, but because land values skyrocketed to the point that somebody made him (or her) an offer they couldn't refuse. You can find info on the place online. Wonder whatever happened to that guy...or gal...

In 2003 I bought a Pioneer Flightstar basket case. I spent a winter rebuilding it with all new A/N hardware. I previously had six hours of dual instruction in a Cherokee 140. This particular bird had a Rotax 503. 5 Gallons of fuel, single place, and weighed 248 pounds empty. A friend had a two place Challenger and I flew with him for 12 hours, UL's behave much differently than Cherokee 140s. In all, I put 240 hours on it before selling it. Flying open cockpit, stick and rudder is the only way to fly for me. I have about 20 hours in other UL air vehicles. I'm an old guy, 75 this year, and UL flying is the most fun you can have with your pants on. Edit to add that I did take a ground school to be more safe in flight.

I have to point out a correction for your comment about the Fisher UL aircraft being out of production. While the FP101 model is out of production, the Fisher FP202 is the replacement for that earlier version and IS a currently available ultralight. Factory support from Fisher is good and they've been a stable company for many decades. Not a lot of UL companies can say that. FWIW: I picked up my 80% finished FP202 from Craigs List about a month ago for $2000 (was listed at $3500). A Rotax 503 single carb engine and ballistic chute came with it for that price. It came with everything to finish the aircraft into flying condition except for the engine mount. And here's another little UL knowledge nugget for you: If you add a ballistic chute to your UL, the FAA gives you a weight credit for the addition of that type of safety device. Ask Pastor Jim to peruse the holy book of FAR and I'm sure he'll find it in section 103. I don't remember the weight allowance, but it's slightly more than an average ballistic chute IIRC.

Ive owned a host of cheap airplanes, my very first airplane (turned out to be anything but cheap in recurring medical and rebuild costs) I bought with pocket money at 15 was an Eagle XCR, a cross country development of the American Aerolights Double Eagle - a beautiful contraption with a massive swept fabric wing, end plate fins, a big ole stab canard upfront and a Cayuna 430 for power, control was a combination of swinging in the harness (weight shift) and motorcycle handle rudder control, steering on the ground was by dragging a foot! The hand crafted wood prop was a true thing of beauty, flew well but wandered left or right and took forever to respond to the drag rudder inputs - hence the crashes, one crash was from being blown upside down while sitting on the runway! I had a MAC CDL, also a local version of the Quicksilver side by side, a very rugged machine I enjoyed immensely and I have had a few powered hang glider/trike type contraptions all before I got into real airplanes of the Vans variety.

I've, owned both a quick silver MX and challenger II. The most fun is the quick silver, but if you want to get somewhere, the challenger does it.

I'm in Canada. ultralights are classified different here. you need a permit though the D.O.T. (cheaper then a PPL ) You have standard ultralights and advanced ultralight determened wether or not it has a roof, and engine size. they can weigh up to 2000 lbs.

I'd personally love to own an amphibious Buccaneer ultralight as a former Coast Guard Aviation Machinist Mate Flt. Mechanic on Grumman HU16e Albatross seaplanes. My Wife and I live in an apartment complex that has a Private park on a small lake that's large enough and angled into our off the Atlantic Ocean prevalent winds to base it on. We live on the mainland just above the Florida Keys. I could easily fly down to the Whale 🐋 Harbor / Islamorada sand bar party on weekends regularly during the summer.

Here in Finland you need a certifikat to fly an ultralight plane. The local fly club owns two Euro Club. One of them eqipped with pntones for landning. Regards Stig Österberg from Dalsbruk, Finland.

Very interesting, the money you save on flying can go right into medical insurance.😄I love the ultralight amphibious, great for the cottage, and you can go fishing.

Or "Life insurance" for the Family (Although have to read the small print to make sure there's no clauses/stipulations about dying while flying an ultralight)!

I'm a retired aircraft mechanic. On my wish list is an amphibious ultralight that will transport myself and a few provisions to my wife's cottage, on an island about 400 kilometers away from home. I am located very close to a sweet little bay that would allow me takeoff and landing, (VFR) and folding wings would be a bonus, for towing to my garage about a half kilometer away. Thanks for the video!!!

No licence or medical--only in the US. Unfortunately not in Canada. Here, if you could jump up and pause for a moment mid-air, you'd probably need a licence.

I was at an airfield driving past a hanger with a couple of ultralights parked outside, as I came up to the hanger, a gust of wind picked one of them up, and dropped it upside down onto a fence, the fence survived intact, the ultralight was destroyed. The upshot, fly fences, they are much stronger.

I bought 2 "Seagull" hang gliders which were 3 years old in 1992 for $100.00 each. Found them in a Los Angeles paper published then called "The Recycler". Like a print version of "Craig's List" Sold everything from bicycles to a 5 million dollar yacht suitable for a James Bond villain. The culture of the hang gliders of Los Angeles was the most detestable culture I've ever seen. Governed by a commercial venture called California Wind Sports. It exploited hang gliding into a dangerous cult mentality. They owned the best launch hilltop in the Los Angeles area. It was difficult to reach scrub land bought for cheap from the government in 1972. You had to get flying lessons from them that cost as much as lessons in a licensed plane. But as I had taken licensed flight training 10 years earlier I saw their flight handbooks were worthless trash. You had to maintain the glider to their standard of $400.00 inspection every 6 months, and to replace any parts they deemed needed replacement, and although they were the original seller of my gliders new 3 years earlier mine were too old to pass inspection. Their new designs had no standard aviation grade parts. All the parts, every nut, and bolt, and cable, was odd ball size aviation grade that you couldn't buy anywhere else except from their over priced store that had so little stock they had to order almost anything you had to buy. Their propaganda was it was all for safety to prevent the government from coming in and making the rules. I didn't submit to that cult bullshit so I couldn't fly from their hill. But they didn't own the "bunny hop" training hill. So I went there to fly. You can hear them on the video my brother shot at the time saying "Block his path. Make him crash. If he crashes often enough he won't come back". They were so bad. I saw their behavior in some wild ducks in Venice Beach. They were white ducks chasing a brown duck on foot. They caught up to him right in front of my car, and beat him up. I honked my horn, I got out, I yelled at them. I was a large obviously dangerous, aggressive, and hostile animal. and walked right up to them. They didn't break until I made contact shoving them away. I could have had duck dinner they were so focused on their odd duck. He got a break, and ran. They didn't fly they ran after him. That behavior was like the hang gliders treating me like the odd duck despite the dangers. The threat to my life that I could have prosecuted. Niel Armstrong was doing a flying show on an early cable documentary channel at the time. One episode was about hang gliders In other episodes of the show he flew many other planes. Many historic restorations. Some of the owners were so honored by Nel Armstrong coming to fly their plane they installed plaques commemorating the day Niel Armstrong flew the plane. Armstrong was one of the test pilots for the first Rogolo hang gliders working with the inventor Rogolo testing it for use as a re entry vehicle. He could fly anything. He was the first man to land on the moon too. But when this man asked the hang gliders if he could fly their kite they told him. "Not without lessons first." At the same time I was working on development projects in the aerospace industry. For the Boeing 777 fuselage I machined the fuselage turning tool. I made the supersonic test stand for supersonic testing of a 1/3 scale model of the F22 Raptor during its development for Nasa Ames supersonic wind tunnel testing labs. In my considered opinion the hang gliders of Los Angeles are plum nuts. But they are also the head office of the national hang gliding association The USHGA which exploits the sport nationally the same way they exploit it in Los Angeles.
