Talking about beer I found a joke that fits. Four CEOs of beer companies are having a meeting and they decide to get a drink. The CEO of Budweiser orders a Bud light. The CEO of Miller orders a Miller Lite. The CEO of Coors orders a Coors Light. The CEO of Guinness orders a Coke. The three CEOS then ask him, why aren't you ordering a Guinness? He replies: "If you guys aren't drinking beer than neither will I."

What you said about travel is very interesting. I grew up in a small village and you absolutely nailed the topic. I think that's more a difference between urban and rural regions because here in Germany we have the same problem. Mostly older people never leaving the known stuff to learn something new. It's kinda strange, thinking about how they become limited in mind like they are limiting their movement. Sorry for my bad english.

Nah, the superficial thing is more based on the fact that Americans love small talk (which Germans consider a waste of time), call everyone a friend pretty much immediately (Germans use the more neutral word "Bekannter" first, a "Freund" is something deeper), ask "how do you do" without expecting a honest answer and tend to put a greater emphasis on make-up and fashion than most Germans do. I actually think that a German initially has to work harder for his job, because the employers are way more careful who they hire in the first place. Later on though, the hard work is actually rewarded with more job security. We can currently see the downside of the lack of worker protection in the US. It's an inhuman system designed to squeeze the common worker.
@KrautsalatAnAmericaninGermany

Yes! To your final sentences! I did not think to get into this but i have the opinion that the American system is designed to keep people working. In a way they legalized slavery. The average person can just get by. I spent several years working 6 and sometimes 7 days a week. I burned myself out and once i cut myself back and even started taking more time off i saw my production improve.
@swanpride
@swanpride 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I have paid a lot of attention to US politics since Trump run for president and I am frankly aghast over what I have discovered. It's basically a nation of "Paketsklaven" - Package slaves, that's a word we coined to describe our amazon/delivery workers, except that even THEY have more rights over here than the average worker in the US. At least they are allowed to pee. Not to mention the actual "in chains" slavery which is happening in American prisons - which in turn undermines the job market even further. It's like the US just can't exist without slaves.

after coming to the US as a german. not as a tourist but as some1 thrown straight into a hood I was shocked about that friendliness at first, I think it comes from that you can adress everybody with *you* and in Germany it is a red line between the *Du* and *Sie*
@manub.3847
@manub.3847 4 жыл бұрын
@@petrapan2516 "Red line", I think that this depends more on the situation / circumstances. In the family environment + circle of friends, it is now common for adults to be addressed with "you" and first names (during my childhood these were all nominal uncles and aunts) In the workplace it depends on the environment. About 5 years ago, the "jungen Arbeit-Küken"(m/f) would not have dared to "duzen" (almost) any colleague without explicit permission.Today I turn the tables and explicitly use the last name and the formal "Sie" in the presence of customers.

On the beer cliche: When I was in Los Angeles as a tourist (I'm from Austria), I went to this bar. I think it was somewhere in St. Monica. The bar keeper insisted that I'll try typical CA beers and gave me something called "Golden Road" (I think). I switched to Stella after that one. Let's just say it was not the best experience I've ever had. I didn't tell him ;)

When we were in the US in 2019, we went to a supermarket to buy some (not many) groceries. While paying for the things the cashier asked wether we need bags, sounded like an automated process because when we said ‚no it‘s not much we can handle this with our backpacks‘ she had an immensely confused look on her face and did not know what to say. This is a thing that keeps popping up when you talk about waste. Great channel btw, found it in my recommendation. Yes. Sadly. Although the people are typically very friendly there is an overwhwelming attitude that USA is the best so by that everyone else would be inferior. Like, i can say americans do not respect Mexicans but give more respect to Canadians. When in my opinion both are wonderful people.

I'm a big traveler, especially to other countries. I've been to Canada, Norway, Spain, France, Italy, Jamaica, Chile, Iceland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China. I'm pretty lucky in that regard. Most Americans don't have the means of desire to travel overseas, which is a shame. However, I will mention one counterpoint to the notion that Americans don't travel. People from other countries have to remember that the US is huge with many different landscapes and cultures within it, so we already have a ton to see in our home country. It would years to travel around the US and you still wouldn't even scratch the surface so to speak. That might account for a lot of why Americans don't travel internationally. From my experience though, there is a lot to be said for going to a completely new country and trying to immerse yourself in their culture. I will travel until I am old and physically can't anymore. 😁

The main cliche popping to my mind beside teh concerningly high prevalence of guns is the level of "patriotism" that borders on religious zealotry. I understand pride in one's achivements, but pride in where you happened to have been born? Nope. Can't wrap my head around that one.

11:50 - It's not only about if and how often someone is travelling. It's also about "how" people travel, their mindset and education. Travelling is relatively cheap, young people travel all around the world. Working in Hotels and Restaurants myself I get the impression a lot of young people mainly travel for their bucket lists, social media posts and to be able to tell "I have been to New York, Paris, Tokyo, etc." In my line of work I have met so many people who just travel because they can or because everyone does it. People who fly to e.g. London just for some party. It really isn't about where you go or how often you travel. Unfortunately, "quantity over quality" seems to be the standard mindset.

I don't think the superficiality cliche is that much about excitability, but refers more to consumerism-driven pretentiousness and people placing more value on external appearances and perceived wealth (oftentimes fake wealth!) than on strength of character and honesty. From my experience - having lived in both Germany and the USA - pretentiousness is indeed a bit more pronounced and culturally acceptable in the U.S. than in Germany.

One thing thats weirding us Krauts out is that Americans casually ask "how are you" and dont wait for the answer and walk away, while here, you expect an answer, even it its just "good, thanks". I agree on the basic american excitement. The wastefulness idea might also have something to do the usage of cars to go and buy something from the store across the street. Yeah, I know, thats a clichee as well, but I´ve seen that a lot. Its weird that a lot of big American breweries, especially in your home state of Wisconsin, where founded by Germans and managed to give american beer a bad image. Like, what went wrong? If there are american states that should be predestined to make awesome beer, it should be PA and WI. I tried Yuengling when I was in PA, its pretty okay. My recommendations regarding german beer would be: -Tannenzäple -Köstritzer -Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel -Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel, as well as Andechser Spezial Hell (dont get their Pilsner though...) -Operator Dunkler Doppelbock I kinda like it like I like my metal, the darker, the better. :3

Yep, Yuengling is one of my favorites. I think all of those big name beers were good once upon a time but then they started to build a bigger empire and realized that more money is made by selling more. If you ever get over that way again Leinenkugels from Wisconsin is good!!

Statistically, every American owns 1.2 guns on average. :) I was in the US last year and asked a barkeeper standing in front of several taps with different labels on them for his best beer.... the result was Bud Light. I was pretty baffled. Didn't taste as horrible as I expected, but I still wouldn't call it beer.

As a German who has been to the US quite a bit i cant say the American Beer is bad. i never had bud light or any light beer but the American Craft Beer is or can be verry good. in the bars ive been to i had way more beer to choose from than i would have in germany and i liked most of them. i have to agree on the sam adams part since it comes close to the taste of german beer.

About the beer clichee. There was a lot of change in the US over the last decades. At my firts visit in the US 1976, it was Budwiser, Schlitz and Papst Blue Ribbon. 🤮 The next vist was for my honeymoon in 1991 , there you already got Corona and DosXX. Not the best but way better than Bud or Schlitz. Next visit 3 years later, ok it was in Wisconsin and there was a ton of brew pubs and micro breweries already. The in 1998 I moved to NJ for some years and the micro brewery scene grew even more. I read a number that meanwhile there are about 18000 small breweries all over the US. Are all beers good, hell no - who needs an espresso double IPA. But a lot of them were darn good. On the US obesity poblem, the people have not a lot apof chances. High frcutose corn syrup pretty much in everything but bottled water. This stuff is dangerous.
