@ omgsolikevalleygirl - Krautsalat has explained this in one of his prior videos; when you travel the world and you want to get in contact with people you have you use a simple way of the English language which enables other people whose first language is not English to be able to understand you and to talk to you. (Sorry for my long sentence, a typical German way of misbehaviour ;-)

The legend says that the Franks and their king Charlemagne fled at the end of the 8th century during the Saxon War and were unable to get further along the banks of the Main river. Then a soldier discovered a deer crossing the river at a ford and the Franks were following on its trail. However, their enemies could not find this ford and the Franks escaped. At this place the Franks settled and called it, "the ford of the Franks" - Frankfurt. The other side of the river, where the Saxons had stayed behind, is today called "Sachsenhausen".

Charlemagne was crowned King of the Alemanni (a Germanic tribe) in Frankfurt. That would not have been in a newly founded city, Frankfurt is also older. These Alemanni also made Frankfurt the commercial metropolis that it is today. What was the ford war today is the airport and the train station. In Europe, a skyline like in Frankfurt only exists in Paris, London and Moscow. That's what makes them so special. Because of the 'old opera' there was a long argument about whether the ruin should be preserved as a memorial or whether it should be rebuild. As a rich city, they opted for the expensive variant. And now they're have rebuild half-timbered houses in the city, next to the skyscrapers. Contrasts like this are typical of Frankfurt.
@LadyLiluna
@LadyLiluna 4 жыл бұрын
Ah, I was looking for this comment about the Opera House, as the video reminded me of my grandma. She grew up in Frankfurt and when she was older - so part of the working population - she joined in when the petition for the rebuild of the opera house went around. It wasn't just a question of "preserving a memorial" but also a question of costs. The city itself felt it too expensive to restore the building. However, quite a large part (I cannot remember the numbers, tho) of the population of Frankfurt wanted the Opera House to be rebuild. Many also worried that the ruins would also been removed. When the city gave their consent to have the Opera House restored, many of the People payed into the funding of the restauration. At least that is the story I was told every time I visited Frankfurt with my Grandma.

@@LadyLiluna Frankfurt is a rich city and if they want the money then they have the money. Above all, it was a political struggle and the ruling mayor said at the time: 'I wish someone would come at night and blow everything away so that there is finally peace.' After that, everyone called him Dynamite Rudi.

@@Mischnikvideos Ah, that is very interesting. I have not really checked up on the opera house itself (tho it does look pretty on the outside) but I always like the stories told by the elderly. Yes, Frankfurt is indeed a rich city, I agree. They are working on quite some large projects at the moment (I think). Also thanks for the additional information. :D

About the "Holly Roman Empire". Thomas Jefferson did have a PoW from Hanau (not that far away from Frankfurt) and with him, he discussed the "Holy Roman Empire", how it works and why it has lasted so long. After the Americans had defeated the British, Jefferson was sent to France as the Ambassador from Paris he was sent to the Netherlands to negotiate the conditions for getting a credit line from the Dutch banks. As this negotiation was a quick success for Jefferson he decided to travel to Hanau to meet his former PoW and discuss further details about the "Holy Roman Empire". Back in France, he wrote a letter to the constitutional committee to implement his new ideas that he got out of his latest discussions. So you could say that the organization chart of the "Holy Roman Empire" was a kind of a poster boy for the US constitution. Therefore the basic elements of Germany and the US are so close to each other (the subsidiarity system, strong states or Bundesländer, two chambers one for the federal diet and one for the states or Bundesländer, and the parliament have the control of the Treasury or in short a lot of power and balance) Another fact about Frankfurt it is the only German alpha city: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globalization_and_World_Cities_Research_Network

I think you missed a point: Frankfurt is the seat of the European Central Bank, or ECB for short. So we're in control. Frankfurt also has an infamous reputation of being THE city with the highest drug consumption, that's why some people call it "Junkfurt". Whether this has to do with the banking business, I'll leave that to your opinion.

Eric (or are you Erich now 😃?). Hello from Bettendorf Iowa! I've been to Germany several times and recently flew out of that big Frankfurt airport. To me though, Chicago Ohare is still much more intimidating! My daughter and her family now live in Neenah, WI. and I was there visiting last weekend. Where in Wisconsin are you from? I like your videos because you offer a fresh perspective. I am not into Metal but I am very into Germany! Both of my parents are from Europe and speak German and I love the German culture. Erich depending on who you ask lol! For me i would say Frankfurt was more intimidating only because of the language. I had been through O'hare before coming to Germany but stepping into the airport at Frankfurt was literally my first Euro experience so i think just for personal reasons its "bigger" for me. But...O'hare is no joke! Well, i moved around a lot in Wi and nearly covered all 4 corners lol

I moved to a Frankfurt suburb from Hamburg for my first full time job. I hated it. I was used to a multicultural, lively city, Frankfurt in the late evening is dead, as everyone lives in the small town outside F. The Staus during rush hour were famous. A shitty public transport system to the edge of town where I lived. The first weekend my friend visited, she was on a course nearby, and we went to what was described to us as the red light district, but also where all the pubs were. Being used to the Reeperbahn , we thought we were Statisten in einem schlechten film. We met some nice Americans though, one of whom I was a pen friend ( before Internet) with and visited in N.C. later. Hope you had a better time!

Regarding to your headline "Does Frankfurt have the highest quality of life in Germany?" According to worldwide ranks of "Mercer´s Quality of living Index" Munich is the most liveable city of Germany ranked on place 3 shared with Vancouver/Canada and Auckland/New Zealand then comes Düsseldorf ranked on place 6 followed by Frankfurt ranked on place 7, then Berlin on place 13 and Hamburg on place 19. First place is literally owned by Vienna/Austria for a decade...2nd is Zürich/Switzerland The evaluation is based on 39 factors (which is way more detailed than most of the other existing rankings like for instance "The Economist" by the way) including political, economic, environmental, personal safety, health, education, transportation and other public service factors

In WW2 there was no tactical bombing. The target was to destroy. The allies wanted to end the war by bombing everything. So a lot of historical buildings have been destroyed. Do not get me wrong. I'm not proud of our history. But bombing everything and everybody has destroyed a lot more than just buildings. I love how you see germany right now. And how we come together in peace.

Telephone: As far as I know, Phillipp Reis invented the first device to transfer sound over electrical (Telegraph) wires and called it "Telephon", but his "Microphone" and "Speaker" were very poor. Later Alexander Graham Bell improved this apparatus with knowledge out of studies from Antonio Meucci, so in the end Bell was the one that made the telephone a usable thing and developped it's success, while Reis was already dead and Meucci went bankrupt before he could pay the Patend fees. Now Germany, Italy and the USA claim the invention of the telephone for themselves and maybe they all are right and wrong simultaneously...
