I'd like to shout out for The Rogues, Flash's group of street level villains. They all know how seriously outmatched they are against their Speed Force Foil, so what do they do? In a unique move for the medium, they play by his rules. They keep their heists purposefully light, they avoid any civilian casualties or unnecessary ruthlessness. Let the hero have his game, and pick up what they can on the side.

That's one of the arguments I have for Juggernaut being smarter than he lets on. The Rogues (Flash's) if were good would be one hell of Heroic team. Well own two books where they do exactly that type of thing. Gorilla Grodd shows up in Coast City and its up to the Rogues to stop him and they do. Another they take on Neron (Think Mephisto for DC) and this was a one shot. Dunno if the nu52 ones still follow this code or not but Captain Boomerang's son learned the hard way not to break it as kicked him into a pit with his black Lantern daddy.

Uh, one dimensional before Tom Hiddleston? I think you're missing Journey into Mystery. Post Siege Loki was before MCU Loki ever got popular and kid Loki was literally an attempt by Loki to reinvent himself. He knew that actual him would never not fall back into the same traps of personality so he made a new him. And new him was an amazing hero, that was looked down upon by his people from the get go because he is Loki and then had to have a battle of smarts and will against his former self that set a trap for him. What I'm getting at is that anti-villain Loki isn't a response to Tom but rather Tom is a response to that Loki whom had an ending I'd point out was actually tear jerking. I've almost never cried reading a book, but I cried reading that one. "Damn me. Damn you all." That's why to this day people will debate the ending of that series, because it was beautiful and it was heart breaking and a rebuff of the idea that the status quo won't always come back and that such a thing might actually be terrible.

And while I like Amanda Waller's motivations, it needs to be better shown for her to be #1. She should have a "you can't handle the truth" moment when explaining what drives her. I liked the JL/Batman Beyond "Epilogue" episode where Waller admitted that she has sins she'll answer for one day. It shows that while she's not evil, she may do "evil things" when necessary.

I can’t believe people are questioning the fact that The Joker belongs on this list. His depiction in The Dark Knight was truly terrifying because his motive was the introduction of chaos; unrelenting, uncompromising and impersonal chaos. He could not be bullied or reasoned with. He could not be bought or identified. He wanted to bring about the downward spiral of society without actually benefitting from it. He isn’t evil for power or glory: “Some men just want to watch the world burn”.

How did the riddler not make this list??? He does what he does because of his abusive father and it's purely him trying his hardest to prove to him that he's not a cheat, he just is that smart. He feels the need to prove it with the most in depth and difficult riddles that the world's greatest detective sometimes can't solve to prove that he's not what his father said he was.

I gotta say, this is the kind of list that no one would ever agree on, no matter who is on it. Even a top 20 or 30 would ruffle everyone's feathers and leave out some great candidates. So overall? Nicely done. I especially admire (even if I don't agree) putting Joker at the very bottom, and a surprise entry in Amanda Waller at the top. Creative, and certainly bold moves.

For people who want Mister Freeze to be on this list: correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't his nuance and motivation created in the TV series and not in the comics?
@Outside85
@Outside85 5 жыл бұрын
It was. And he was massively rewritten from the original version which was just another robber with a cold-gun. Also, while the TV version was imported into comics, it never really became as good, it was just kind of there... and then the New 52 happened and Victor became insane and Nora had nothing to do with him before being turned into an icecube.

Kind of unrelated, but it’s pretty cool that both The Joker and Harley Quinn were originally created to be one-time villains. In The Joker’s case, he was only supposed to be a villain for a single issue of Batman. The very first issue I believe? As for Harley Quinn, a lot of work went into creating her character, even though she was only supposed to appear in one episode of Batman: The Animated Series, and that’s it.

@@Sheffdawg2305 I would have to disagree with you there, his motivation in the comics (that of being in love with mistress death) makes much more sense and is also relatable, the movie motivation is just stupid and unimaginative, he could just create more food or create hospitable planets but no, killing half of everyone is what he does, the comics both make more sense and is something we can understand at a personal level, he's just trying to impress someone who doesn't care about him and death is using him as a tool to do her bidding.

The way I always saw the Joker was a mix of the 'super sanity' thing and Killing Joke. Its not that he has no motivations, its that due to the super-sanity and 'reinventing himself each day' he basically 'remembers' a different backstory each time. The backstory in the Killing Joke was honestly what he believed happened that particular day, and his motivations were based on that, trying to prove one bad day can break a person. But the next time they meet up, he's reinvented himself and has an entirely different remembered backstory that informs his motives. Which would make him completely unpredictable, because if you did manage to figure out what that version of him thought he was motivated by, it would be entirely different the next time.

You should explore more than the Big 2. For example, the 2000AD comics have the Judge Dredd villain Judge Death. Jay De'ath (yes, really) was a the sociopathic son of a serial killer dentist who became a Judge (combination of Police, Judge and executioner). He had a simple theory. All crime was committed by the living, thus life itself must be a crime. He gained a group of followers and later a pair of girlfriends who pointed out his hypocrisy but offered him a solution. As a living man himself, he was not ethical as he was breaking his own law. So they turned him into a a super powerful ghost that could possess bodies and become the terrifying monster that he is. He and his cabal executed every living soul on his world, then renamed it Deadworld. Then he got the technology to travel to other dimensions. Even Gotham City that one time.

While his methods in doing so are...strongly undesirable, I support Ra's reasons for doing what he does. Even in the real world, humanity is destroying itself. Global warming, all manner of pollution, political criminals on both sides of the spectrum and worst of all, humans becoming slaves to technology are all very sound reasons for a guy like Ra's Al Ghul to do what he does. I secretly hope for the day a global-wide EMP would destroy all technology for a number of years. Give us humans the push we need to actually think for ourselves for a change. Instead of having to look for Siri or Google for answers. Magneto also has a justifiable reason to do what he does. I mean, how would you like it if you and others like you were horribly mistreated by the masses...all because of what you are? Lex is like that spoiled rich kid that bullies others in High School. They may act like the big dog on campus. But without their money; they're, basically the same as the rest of us. What's REALLY scary, however...is the fact that we've already got a real world version of Lex Luthor in Donald Trump. But DT seems 100 times more arrogant, egotistical, megalomaniacal and insecure with himself than Luthor was. Now...Amanda Waller...never before have I come to hate a character in media more than I do her. She's like Lex Luthor but with a little bit of Cersei Lannister's manipulative behavior and narrow worldview with a little bit of Joffrey's sadism sprinkled in. Like Luthor, she abuses her power and political standing in all the worse ways. Never caring about who she hurts or how many countries suffer in the name of her idea of "justice." Even the Nostalgia Critic pointed out how stupid her ideals are in his review of Suicide Squad. She and Luthor are two comic figures I want to see die and STAY dead

Are we really not going to address that the intentions of actions don't justify horrible things? Magneto's absolutely a villain, he's killed countless innocents and killed or tortured just about every beloved member of the X-Men. Sure he may have his reasons, but that doesn't make his actions redeemable

Blaze Legendsword they’re actually quite complex. To summarise them: - Thanos does many evil things out of his love for the character ‘death’. Including killing his daughter. He also wants to save his ppl which is the side that the movie showed. - Darkseid is frickin Darkseid (and I don’t say that lightly). He has such evil motives he swapped babies with the character ‘Highfather’ for peace between planets and wants nothing but to conquer and get the anti-life equation. If you possess the equation he’ll either beat the shit out of u for it or go on his knees for it.
