bonus tip even for players in MR: take the throw when you’re in the corner. it’s not worth the risk trying to avoid 1200 dmg, rather than taking 2k-5k dmg trying to tech a throw. drive rush combos do dmg PLUS punish counter damage is insane. you gain. meter back while being thrown too. TAKE THE THROW

Yipes said something recently that I super agree with - this is one of those games you shouldn’t play when you’re tilted. If you do find yourself losing a lot, especially to people you know you should be beating, it might be time to take a small break/walk/scream into a pillow

Good tips. I have a lot of trouble using drive rush in general. I never know just when to use it from neutral. The worst is when I go for a low punch out of DR and it comes out is a DP.
@DeathDasein
@DeathDasein 7 ай бұрын
try not to use it from too far away, it get's easier to defend from it. just throw some jabs and lows, move backward and forward to distract the opponent and then dry rush to keep them guesing; sometimes go for a low, others for an overhead and others for a grab.
@Chris_F
@Chris_F 7 ай бұрын
If you’re getting a DP that means you’re hitting down-forward before your drive rush. Try to focus on going back to neutral before hitting forward for your drive rush

I've had some success jumping back vs grapplers by recognizing when their throw whiffs and immediately drive rushing as soon as I land, which results in an optimal combo in some situations, EG DR + Punish Counter St.HP then Cr.HP as Ken. The upside is there's less risk they'll be able to pull off their anti neutral jump fakeout, the downside is if they late throw instead of command grab, you'll have lost a punish opportunity. I guess it all depends on the opponent.
@Chris_F
@Chris_F 7 ай бұрын
Absolutely depends on the opponent, you pretty much nailed it and I couldn’t agree more. I find most intermediate players don’t have enough awareness to back jump and react which is why I recommended neutral jump
@skychaos87

Pretty much, the risk reward depends on the options your opponent goes for. However, as for the more optimal combo, neutral j.hk actually does more damage.

Good stuff! One question on drive rushing on KD. Maybe this is a character specific thing, but I generally don't drive rush on knockdown against characters with OD DP (Juri, Ken, Ryu, Guile, etc...a lot of the cast) if they've plenty drive. I used to do it a lot as Manon and I personally find I just get OD DP'ed every single time easily on react, like it wasn't even something my opponent had to guess, all they had to do was look for the green flash and bob's your uncle. The only KD I could find from labbing and researching that was safe from this was from cr.HK (universal sweep), anything else seemed like was an easy gimme green flash react for my opponent if they weren't low on drive. Am I...doing this wrong? Cause now I just don't ever drive rush on kd unless they're low on drive or it's a character like Honda or Dhalsim where I don't have to worry about it...
@Chris_F
@Chris_F 7 ай бұрын
You can do a drive rush then whiff a jab attack. That should give you enough time to guard and block, baiting their OD reversal for a big punish!

1:07 alright I do wanna bring something out about this being the ONLY time you should use this. What about on wakeup when you know the opponent is going to grab or hit you and you don't wanna make that guess? If they block it, it's bad yeah. But again this is when you KNOW they'll do it. I was very confused about ONLY OD version working on wakeup for a while as i'm used to anti airs being an at least alright wakeup option.

I'm not sure if you should always buffer DR after long range cancellable normals. Even if you have a lot of gauge. I feel like if you DR cancel a normal on block and your opponent takes the throw, they won the interaction. And I they DR cancel on my block when they are in the corner, I'm drive reversaling most of the time.
@Chris_F
@Chris_F 7 ай бұрын
The best habit to form is to always drive rush cancel just outside of your effective range. This way, if you whiff punish an arm or leg you will always get the punish combo and if the opponent doesn’t push a button you won’t get the drive rush
@Chris_F
@Chris_F 7 ай бұрын
Also good drive rush cancel strings will still give you time to block a drive reversal but this depends on timing and the character

It has too much forward movement and it’ll cause your reversal to whiff

@@Chris_F true, in some situations it will land but i guess medium and light will be more consistent i think if your opponent jumps and your in the corner its the best option and always seems to land from experience but even that could potentially whiff

@Chris_F Thanks Chris. My goal is to hit "master" with Luke, (who I've been playing since the demo), by Evo. I'm actually going there to compete in sf6. Do I expect to win it all? No, but this is a bucket list thing that I finally have the chance to do, so I'm going for it. I'm just looking to vibe with as many members of the FGC as I can.

how does one buffer a normal cancellable drive rush

How do you buffer, something that is one input.
@Chris_F
@Chris_F 7 ай бұрын
1. By staying outside of your attack range. If you whiff punish an attack you will always get a drive rush cancel with the buffer 2. By doing it in range, then reacting to hit/block during the drive rush screen freeze
@theSaani
@theSaani 7 ай бұрын
I like 1, thats good advice. But 2 should not really be a buffer imo, its a hit confirm - not to be pedantic, but people need to not just mindlessly always press drive rush.
@Chris_F
@Chris_F 7 ай бұрын
@theSaani depends on the button, most attacks don’t have a big enough cancel window to hit confirm into specials or drive rush.

If beginners and intermediate’s didn’t do this mistakes, they wouldn’t be beginners or intermediate’s lol It’s ok to be beginner or intermediate. The goal is to never be stuck, and always improve even if it’s just a tiny bit at a time.
