It's very easy to take the wrong path when you're on the mountain. First time I was there I went the wrong way and ended up at Tofukuji Temple. Fifteen years after that I went back to Fushimi Inari and finally hiked to the top.

There is a Lawson (I believe) across the street from the entrance. I laid my phone down while checking out, and accidentally left it. When I realized it 20 minutes later and went back, it was still lying in the same spot! My shrine visit did not hurt that outcome. ⛩️🕋
