As a dietitian I can’t agree with number 1. Don’t go overboard with the fats, but appreciate that they add flavour, nutrients and satiety to a well balanced, high fibre meal. They also help you absorb fat soluble vitamins from other foods.

I don't get a lot of fat in my diet, not on purpose, I'm just vegetarian and eat a lot of whole veggies. The only fat I tend to get day to day is from almonds and the bit of EV olive oil I use to cook up my veggies. Fat is important and I think saying "don't cook with oil" is unreasonable. There are some good oils out there. I buy olive oil in a spray which definitely helps with portions. Instead of pouring oil I just mist it til I feel my veggies/food are just covered enough to not scorch/stick.

I agree with EVERY tip! Reducing oil and adding more veg were the two things that helped me the most. Complete game changers. I also focused on “more movement” instead of an exercise routine. So now I walk a lot more, dance around my house, and take the stairs instead of the elevator. It works for me!

Yes! Putting on some music and dancing while cooking and cleaning is a great way to make the necessary mundane activities more enjoyable and get in that movement without worrying about whether you’ve had enough “exercise” that week.

@reseyworldexactly. Fat is the most calorie dense macronutrient, and if it's not paired with fiber and/or protein, it's usually not as filling. I find fat from nuts to be more satisfying than fat from plain oil.

It can be healthy if not over used. Olive and avocado oil are considered healthy fats because of what they're usually paired with: protein and fiber. Avocado (fruit) is also a healthy fat because it's usually paired with something with fiber and protein.

@@katieinhops5163 in that case, you could say all fats are healthy. Most people don't just eat fat in a meal. If you're eating a full meal, it's almost always paired with protein and fiber. Technically, in the right amounts, every food is perfectly fine and healthy, with that argument. But generally, if I put an extra unnoticed 15g of fat on something (easy to do with olive oil and nut butter, etc) that can easily be an added 100+ calories down the drain when having a little less would've given me basically the same taste and fullness. It's not that fat should be avoided, it's that it's important to be careful because a little makes a big difference with miniscule amounts.

from someone who was for a long time “thicker”. I have dieted to lose weight and I have changed my diet to become healthier so many times for years and this is what finally helped: - dont quit something but limit it - weigh your food and inform yourself about portion sizes - do not quit oil, it adds so much flavour and pleasure to eating.. simply reduce the amount you are eating to one tablespoon per meal - try to combine the hunger crushing combo (a meal/snack with fat, protein, fiber, (and carbs). It’s proven to fill you up quite fast because it has all you need in it - weigh yourself periodically. know yourself, it is easy to say “it’s just data”, but it is not for most of us. You cannot change how you feel about a number over night - use diet coke to fulfil your sweet cravings (max 2 per day). Is it the healthiest option? no, but it does not add calories so try it to get used to eating less when you are not actually hungry. - allow yourself to have fast food every now and then, but change your order to be less big and less calorie dense. Be smart about what you know fills u up and what does not - you have an intense craving? try to find a “light” version of that product and eat a portion size (oven baked chips vs regular chips already makes a difference). - the only thing I would recommend for you to truly stop is alcohol I have never been able to lose weight until I started paying attention to HOW much I eat. That one was the game changer for me (also realising how many calories nuts and chips have HAHA). I was always eating double the portion of what you need to become full and I had never realised it. No one had ever told me that. My entire family eats that much. So I stopped obsessing about WHAT I eat and I changed how much I ate of that thing. I lost 10kg in 4 months and I never felt like I was depriving myself of any food. I was even eating pizza which is crazy calorie dense! So before you try all else, check your portion sizes:) If you are always feeling incredibly full after eating, then you are probably making meals that are too large. You just have to look at the box of whatever you are eating and see the amount of grams they deem as one portion et voila! :)

This jus5 doesn’t allow for the psychology of eating/overeating. Minimal carbs promote craving for more carbs! Protein and fibre are imperative, but any carbs cause release of cortisol. For emotional eaters, just saying eat fewer or different carbs fails to heed both the cortisol impact and the emotional drivers. Why don’t we wake up to this?

I second the portion size thing. No one batted an eye that I, as a 10 year old child, was eating the same portions as an adult. Decades of that will definitely simply cause weight gain! The moment I reduced my portion sizes to half, and told myself I could eat more later if I wanted to , the weight began to fall off.

Having done so much reading and research personally, and also having biology and pharmaceutical degrees, I was *delighted*, borderline amazed, to hear you speak on the exercise research correctly. It is so rare to see anyone in the weight loss/fitness influencer sphere who is knowledgeable (or will admit) that the science simply doesn’t back up that exercise creates *long term weight loss - fyi it doesn’t. If you were extremely sedentary then yes it will help increase loss for a few months, it if you have a semi-active, normal life it’ll balance out very quickly. Almost all “research” that suggests otherwise was literally sponsored by Coco-cola or Nestle

I was 120 lbs as a middle schooler/teen. Transitioning to adult life and getting in a comfy relationship made me gain weight up to 196 lbs when I was around 23 years old. I’m gonna be turning 27 in a few months and I’m back down to 149 currently, and my goal is to get to 130. My weight loss hasn’t been as fast as I would like but I’m getting there regardless. It’s taken a lot of learning and habit breaking to get back to where I am. Weight loss can be really fast for some and for others it can take years. The most important thing is that you can get yourself to stay consistent! Good luck to everyone else who is on their own journey, and thank you for this video!

OMG I absolutely LOVE the 10th tip! That is my favourite tip! I'm going to make "Dont miss twice" my rule of thumb for now on.I was trying to come up with "consequences" for whenever I have a slip up but to tell myself "dont miss twice" THAT is a good consequence. I'll tell myself that if I eat wrong one day, eat right the next.

I agree. We dont need recipes. Just make plates/bowls with ingredients we love. Batch cook starches etc which helps to put it altogether. i also like to make smoothies where I add frozen cauliflower and chickpeas (you cant taste them. Keeps me full for hours. I pick which classes I want to try, and schedule in "free time" as will to do what I want there. It's a "date with myself". 😊

Finally disconnecting exercise from scale weight tipped the mental scales in my favor. I now really enjoy movement, and I've found joy in walking and daily movement. I strength train 3 times a week for my bones, tendons, and to help me as I age. Disconnecting it from weight loss and finding other, stronger motivation changed my perspective. I'm 55, and let's face it, I'm just not as bothered by the flab or wrinkles, but I am motivated by the thoughts of being independent and strong as I age.

I get groceries every monday and when I get home I prep everything...veggies cut up, brocolli steamed for meals, a couple proteins made and chia pudding for breakfasts. Sometimes I also do snack bowls with yogurt/fruit or different protein. It helps me stay on track!!!!

I cook with water. You can saute shallots in water. Steam mushrooms and courgette without oil.instead of salt I add lemon or herbs such as coriander. I use a good non stick pot and have scrambled eggs or omelette made without any oil or butter

This video came into existence at the perfect time for me! I have implemented several points discussed now. I am not vegan nor am I particularly interested, instead I have decided to make plants the star of my plate with animal protein as co-star and it has been working well so far. Since this video posted I've dropped 8 lbs, increased my fiber (one of my goals), lowered my slightly elevated blood pressure (also one of my goals). I have NEVER dropped weight this quickly and easily. All while not feeling hungry or deprived. And honestly, there have been meals that I don't have meat because I feel satisfied enough without it. Things are moving in the right direction! Basically playing food tetris with calorie density LOL. Thanks Chelsea!!😘😉

I do the most random things lol. Lately I’ve enjoyed zucchini, (or shredded cabbage) that I process through my mandoline slicer (sorta look like short fries). I water sauté and throw in marinara with few green olives. With few roasted potatoes on the side. Soups of all kinds. This week, roasted butternut squash, sweet potatoes. Sauté some onion, and puréed the cooked veg. And burrito bowl using rice, corn, little chicken, avocado and pico de gallo. I typically have roasted veg and chicken breast marinaded and cooked on hand. Made a pot of beans also this week, navy beans with a little smoke lean turkey meat. Hope that helps 😊

I wish I could mentally stop the cycle and go to a moderation-based mindset but it’s like going against the grain of my being. Love the video and the way you explay things! But I feel like some people need to hear that: you that are watching this must find the diet that works best for you. Personally, I never lost any weight while being on deficit, but I lost 10 kg by not being in deficit but having a lot of balanced meals and long walks because that's what works for me. Try everything if you can, and find out what's the best for your own body!

"Buy vegetables you enjoy" - I love this point. Giving yourself permission to choose one or two veggies to rotate is so freeing. When I think about getting healthier it's so easy to run and want to buy all the things but like you said, it's just going to rot in the fridge haha as hard as it is to resist buying 10 different veggies, thinking I'm doing the best thing, it's way more realistic to keep my main veggies down to one or two and keep those on rotation until it's an nearly effortless habit. I work full time and I don't always feel like cooking so whatever I can do to make it easier and less effort for myself is helpful!! Thanks for sharing!

So agree about the exercise! I walk a minimum of 10,000 steps a day and it does nothing. A few years back my biggest results were from changing what I ate. I mean I do my walking because it's just a normal part of life (I don't have a car) and I like it, but year 80 percent of my weight loss was based on what I ate I love the five minute meal ideas! I hate cooking and felt like I had to do the Hello Fresh meals etc which always took me about an hour to make and that was just such a barrier I just eat chocolate for dinner instead. Am going to do the five minutes option with that really good dip you recommended!

Oh my gosh, I've FINALLY found an approach that I can actually implement in my own life!!! I LOVE your emphasis on simplicity. As a busy working mum of two myself, I CANNOT afford to spend tons of mental energy on what I eat. Your framework is so so actionable - I've started batch-steaming sweet potatoes in my instant pot (four medium ones will fit on the trivet in one go!) and batch-cooking grains (buckwheat, which both my husband and i love) to make up the 1/2 of my HATS meals; I use a microwave steamer to steam a buttload of vegetables (tenderstem broccoli and asparagus are my favourite) for my main meals, chuck it all together and add some kind of healthy dressing (which contains a bit of fat, maybe a peanut butter + sriacha dressing that I make). SO SIMPLE. I can live like this sustainably!!! Thank you Chelsea, I LOVE your content and approach to eating and will keep you posted on my progress!

Great tips! My favorite was "Never miss twice". I can and will implement that immediately (especially since I missed today's 3 mile walk. I will not miss tomorrow's!) 😀

I think it so important to mention that once we are working out, the scale doesn't always go down. Even though our bodies are changing we may not be losing weight. We may gain weight but are getting stronger and slimmer. Muscle is denser than fat. Itnis not always about the scale going down when we get close to our goals!!

I'm so happy you're actually promoting a McDougall diet (plant-based, starch-based, oil-free diet). :) Very rare to find in times where everyone eats low carb.

Thank you! These are some great ideas that I will be starting tomorrow.I will say the weighing daily actually Ive been doing and find it very helpful. I also daily exercise. My workouts are not bootcamps! Low impact videos or walks outside, atleast 15 minutes. It mentally makes me feel good.

Omg yes on the easy meals. I’d love to see others’ but recently mine has been rotisserie chicken (precooked from store), pre-prepped broccoli, and some cheese and seasoning. Throw some of each in a bowl in the microwave. Relatively balanced and healthy for almost zero prep time. I used to also keep shredded cabbage in the fridge at all times and I’d add it to everything for bulk, crunch, and vitamins, but haven’t done that in a while.

YES. A lot of these tips seem like common sense, but I feel like your list really narrowed down the reasoning for my lack of commitment to eating healthier (!!). The point of all of these tips is to make eating healthier easierrrrrrr. I tend to go crazy with meal prep (where it has to be a whole performance, complete with all of the perfect ingredients, etc.) - I need to start focusing on how simple and non-prep veg fits into my diet on the daily. Even though exercise doesn't directly cause weight loss, it absolutely contributes to it! If I know I'm supposed to go on a run in a few hours, I'm not going to eat that frozen pizza because I'll feel AWFUL during my run. Instead, I'll take the time to eat something that will fuel me whereas without the run, I would absolutely go for that pizza!

I hear what you are saying about how many calories are in oil, however cutting healthy oil out of your diet entirely for a long term eating habit is problematic. Olive oil is very good for you and apparently women need healthy oils in their diet.

Truly she is speaking of calorie deficits, so if you burn enough calories then you don't need to cut out all the high calorie items, but if you are mostly sedentary then the calorie cut needs to be more extreme to hit those deficits. I would bet that most of us could easily cut the amount of oil we cook with in half. I know I could and will be more aware of moving forward.

Cutting out oils is not unhealthy as long as you are getting fat from whole food sources. Eating olives, avocado, nuts, and seeds, etc. you would be just fine. Women need healthy fats in their diet, but the fat does not need to come from oil. When you eat it as a Whole Food you get the additional benefits of fiber and nutrients also.

This is really amazing information. When i followed this lifestyle I was in amazing shape and maintained my weight, In the past year I have broken all of these. I have given into stress and gained eaisily 15 pounds. This was a great reminder of how easy it really is to do things that benefit me!

I don’t need another recipe book but would love an A+B+C plan. I know you give a lot of ideas here, but when I’m in my kitchen looking at potatoes and broccoli, I have no idea what to put together that is appetizing. I’ve been a vegetarian for a long time, so I get stuck on what to make without eggs and cheese. It’d be nice if there was a mix and match table to bring together healthy and delicious meals instead of eating oatmeal every day for breakfast.

Agreed with everything. Keep it simple. Cava traditional flavor hummus is oil free but I usually don’t bother buying and just mash up some beans if I want to. Store bought is so $$ but definitely do it if it works for you. Trader Joe’s used to have an oil free eggplant hummus but I think that’s gone.

Thank you for these tips! They make a ton of sense. I am getting ready to get back to a whole foods/plant based diet and I needed these reminders as I tend to fall into that all or nothing mindset at times or try and change everything at once and when I mess up it's hard to get back on track. I need to build the consistency and make things simpler and it was nice to hear these reminders.
