During my 2004 teaching year in China we journeyed via an overnight train from Beijing into Inner Mongolia, staying the week of a national holiday to explore the terrain of the steppes and reach the border crossings of China, Russia and Mongolia as well. Such an adventure I'll never forget. And it's fun to see all you courageously fit and well kitted out gals here exploring and tasting the culture of Mongolia on horseback as well. I was especially impressed by your compassion for the injured horse and its rider, then deciding not to give up but to hike the extra 15 k to base camp. Wow - kudos to all!

Thank you Mathilde , I really enjoyed seeing your adventurous ride in such a remote area. I liked how the yurts were so very colourful inside, in contrast to the stark expanse of muted colours of the terrain outside. It made the yurts seem so homely, cozy and warm. In many ways I felt it was a shame that the traditional horses were gradually being replaced by Chinese motorcycles by some herders. I can see there are some advantages to them, but what struck me most was how the motorcycles destroyed the peaceful silence of that remote and silent wilderness. That noise pollution may sadly be the first step to more pollution of a pristine area. It feels as if yet another timeless and unique culture will disappear little by little and be absorbed into the homogeneous way of life that dominates the greater part of our earth.
@NextMeridianExpedition
@NextMeridianExpedition 25 күн бұрын
yes it does feel sad also cause it s been centuries this tradition is going up but at the same time it s hard to judge them... with internet arriving everywhere and access to modernity as a social status element it makes sense...
@jackierichards33
@jackierichards33 17 күн бұрын
@@NextMeridianExpedition I am not judging the people, if they have access to something that makes their lives easier who am I to deny them, it’s just the sadness of seeing another culture starting to erode, another piece of wilderness disappear and the world becoming more homogeneous. Diversity is to be celebrated and yet the more connected we become the more divided society appears to become, fearing inclusivity and the introduction of the unknown. Here in Norway I am staying in a remote place with almost total silence except for the sound of nature. It is incredibly relaxing and feeds the soul. It makes me really value the tranquility which most of us crave at times. It takes me back to my childhood in Highland Scotland when this was the norm.

When you mentioned how that idea of Mongolia first came to mind I thought it sounded very familiar. I was given a big book about horses when I was young. In it, I saw a picture of this Mongolian horse rider in the middle of the Steppe. The seed had been sown. That thought of being out there, all by myself, is a bit scary but at the same time very appealing.

Mongolia is beautiful and the experiences lifetime milestones, however I was wondering what the rate of heart disease is among the native people people of Mongolia since they have been living on goat milk and cheese for centuries. Turns out, they have one of the highest rates in the world of cardiovascular disease and deaths from heart attack and strokes. Second, they have a very high rate of hepatitis, probably from sharing dishes. When one gets it, they all get it. Something to be aware of when traveling in Mongolia.

@@NextMeridianExpedition In Nick's video, they came out with bowls of milk and sugar. Everyone drank from them. In the west, when cows are milked, their udders are disinfected, people wear gloves, the milking machines are sanitary, and the containers the milk goes into are clean. In Mongolia, they do it all by hand, there is little water, and no doubt there is a a lot of bacterial contamination. I would not drink or eat what they offer because you have no idea what has happened to it before you eat or drink it. Stay with the bottled drinks and packaged foods that you cook yourself. To become very sick out there could be a life ending event. Even if it isn't, who needs hepatitis? It can mess up your liver affecting you the rest of your life. You have to keep thinking all the time. Just my opinion.
@russmartin4189
@russmartin4189 Ай бұрын
By the way. My father traveled around Europe three times just prior to WWII, and got out just as the Nazis attacked Poland. In any case, they traveled by bike and ate cooked food at small restaurants, or cheese and bread on the road They drank wine. They tended to eat that way to avoid contamination. Anything canned, bottled, or packaged would be safe.Consider that on future travels, especially in Asia and Aftica. Noraly (Itchy Boots) came down with severe food poisoning in Mozambique. I believe. She tended to eat whatever the locals cooked for her. It usually was OK, but this last time she said it was very very bad.

@@Crystal-cz9do No, and I wouldn''t go there. Too many other places higher on my list. I Googled "how much heart disease is there in Mongolia?" it said the rate is one of the highest in the world, as is their rate for hepatitis. It then went into detail about what is being done to help cut the rates of both. You do not have to go somewhere or live through something to learn about it. Eat their food and drink their milk at your own risk.
