Probably the best tips of all, preserve your night vision, even if you have to use the old pilot trick of closing one eye to preserve it in at least one eye when some clown shines high beams into your eyes. Genius: blind the person coming towards you at fifty miles an hour.

I was having a horrible time driving at night. Then I started taking daily vitamins and my sight became much better. It was mainly being blinded by oncoming headlights that was my issue at driving at night, even with using the look down a d towars the right technique, was still being blinded. But since I started the vitamins I noticed my sight at night becoming a whole lot better.

Hi Rick, hope this finds you well. Thank you so much! I am one of those you helped so much through your videos. I am from the Philippines and I got my driver's license in 2019. I enrolled in a 15-hr driving class then took my exam and I was happy that I passed. Behind my success in getting my DL, I watched all your videos, esp parking. I learned a lot from you, and I come back to you every time I need a refresher. Right now, I am currently in the USA and was shocked how different driving here compared to the Ph. I am outside Chicago ( do they call it country?). Back in Ph our roadsides there are mostly guarded by barriers and road markers/paintings. Then I went out at night for the first time here in the US, it scared the shit out of me cause I couldn't see the road, not very visible road markings and no road lights. That's the reason why I am back to watch your videos again cause I need a lot of things which are applicable in my current situation: familiarization of the place (like what you said in one of your videos, every place is different and requires a driver to learn and adjust), night driving, curves, and so much more. I feel like a new driver again in this different place but I am grateful I can rely on you. BTW, you deserve a lot of praises. Your way of teaching is the best I've seen after so many others I tried watching, maybe your reassuring voice, your character, your on-point content, everything. Apologies for this lengthy message. This is probably good for newbie drivers, but let's be real: if you seriously drive 8-10km/h under the speed limit (10:03) everyone is going to be beeping at you because you're holding up traffic; which can end dangerously.

I agree. I live in an urban area with a record of the worst drivers in the US. If I drove 8-10 miles under the speed limit, I might be seriously involved in a collision and/or run off the road. No one adheres to the speed limit anyway and drives at least 40 on residential and secondary roads and up to 80 on highways.

When I drive at night I always turn the dash lights to a minimum and I opted for the heads up display (it’s a reflexion on the screen of my speed, speed limit and gps guidance) when I got my car; I find that it’s amazing for driving at night because I always have my eyes on the road while still knowing my speed and speed limits.

If you see a Car approaching from the front and if you feel the lights are too high for you, according to the law here in Alberta, look down on the right side of the road and look for the lines, until that vehicle has passed. This will keep you on the road and possible avoid the blinding. Although do not rely on my advice, you can check on google or maybe Rick can confirm. Thank you

In Australia you have guide poles or reflectors on both sides of the road. We drive right hand drive , so the left side of the road has red reflectors and the right has white. We do have cats eye reflectors on free ways and major roads, in the outback on some roads they are generally not marked, so a good set of driving lights are almost mandatory if you don't want to collide with the local wildlife (kangaroos, wombats.cows' camels and any other thing that decides to cross the road )

Thank you again I would like to add few tips if you don’t mind: driving at night first you need to have clean windshield no dust no old with scratches .you can easily tell when the car going in the opposite direction lights are glaring that your windshield is dirty, it also strains your eyes and for modern day drivers avoid having your GPS/phone at the level of your face “the lower the better”,any pair of shining balls on the side means presence of Animals. @@smartdrivetest I am very happy with the content you have put out. I am still learning the basics. Focused on turning and have not even started doing lane changes yet. I can stay centered in lane and brake and press gas to the satisfaction of instructor. Turning at intersections is more complicated. Your video's make it look easy though. And I have watched them a few times to get more details. It is very handy when mixed with what the instructor has me do. I was driving at 8 to 9 tonight so your night time video was helpful, and the video's on turning was extremely useful.

In my class, they never had us drive in the dark but we did talk about how to drive in the dark. I love driving. There is times I have seen skunks at night and it makes me drive slower during nights because I live out in the country not in town. When I see lights. I try to look at the white line on the outside of the road and I also slow down. Driving in town it is crazy because there is a lot of cars and lights. Micro sleep is so dangerous. Something people should think about when driving long periods of time with little to no rest. Some folks feel they can handle it. Personally, at my age, If I feel fatigued/tired I pull over and take some time to rest. Reaching my destination quickly is not worth my life or anyone else's out on the road. Seen my share of tragic accidents because of people falling asleep at the wheel. Stay frosty out there drivers. The life you save may be your own.

Your videos have helped me so much! I am coming up on a major life change that somewhat relates to driving where I might be moving in with a new partner for the first time. I was very insecure all my life about driving so taking a major leap after a major leap of learning to drive feels like my life is moving ahead. I want to be able to be a good driver for both myself and my partner when it comes to things like needing to run errands and getting places to be a functional person lol. In order for me to get comfortable with driving more and do the things I need to do include driving on the highway which is something I have yet to practice but it's on my list. (I have been procrastinating and taking surface roads). Do you have any videos that give tips on driving when moving and hauling(say moving vans like uhauls) or anything related to that? Even road trip advices? Driving opens up so many life options.

What is the proper way to avoid a collision with large ungulates or even ursines that wander into the roadway? I heard that large ungulates behave toward vehicle headlights as if they are a carnivore by waiting to dash away at the last minute (at which point a collision is definitely going to happen) and that the route to defeat that scenario is to extinguish your headlights -- both low-beams and high-beams. As for warning the other motorists, there could be a sequence like this: (from low-beams) high-beams, headlights off, low-beams, repeat twice more. What do you think, Dr. August?

I was (am) leaning night driving and this unfamiliar road had an island and road coming into it as well as it being slightly curved. I couldn't have my high beams on either because of oncoming traffic on the other side. Really messed with my perception. Obv the speed wasn't high but dang. Then I had my reaction times tested with some bugger speeding into a roundabout while I was in it 1st. Due to its location I'm thinking this driver wasnt familiar with the area either but he was still going too fast because I didn't see him before I entered the roundabout. I'm going to stick to local night driving until I get a few solid months of driving under me.

I love all your videos. These are things that are simply not taught by most driving instructors who merely teach to the test. Rather than teaching strategic, defensive driving. Your videos also have so much utility for Australian roads. I really appreciate this. One question, however, when approaching an intersection and braking (at least during the day) I always check my rear mirror as part of cash avoidance from behind. If the traffic behind is blinding you how would you manage this as looking in the mirror to assess the risk could dizzy you? Again thank you for your awesome videos

Also, could you please clarify what you mean by "reflective signs"? Is this all signs ? And is it that the light is reflecting off so as to help light the path ahead? You can also use a GPS or even better a trucker GPS at night as a tool to know where the road ahead is doing be for you get there and even the elevation. It give you a good picture and what to expect , and knowing is half the battle….yo Joe

Night driving here in Tampa is a nightmare. Some of these neighborhoods are blacked out/dimly lit. Pedestrians wear dark clothing asking to be hit. People riding bicycles do not always follow rules of the road by ensuring they have lights on thier bikes and driving on the correct side of the road.

i missed: "You should always be able to stop within the visible distance". also: in poor visibility activate your hazard lights if cars in front of you are stopped and you're the rearmost car (and keep your foot on the breakes: break lights remain on). improves the chance of not getting rearended. it's more difficult to judge the speed of others at night, so don't get caught of guard by the guy cutting you of because he tought you are driving slower than you are.

One thing to add is to double your following distance at night? If this is the case, how do you know whether or not you're tailgating somebody. I know you shall see the back wheels of the car in front but what about when you have your following distance doubled?

Excellent tips! But let's talk about the point in the video at 24:33 where there's an oncoming vehicle and a crosswalk just behind the oncoming vehicle. There's a very common issue where I live, that comes up with this situation in the city at night, where the oncoming vehicle passes the crosswalk and a pedestrian to your LEFT, enters the crosswalk behind the car that just passed it and begins walking into your path from left to right. But you can't see the pedestrian starting to cross because the oncoming car (that just passed the crosswalk) is essentially blinding you with its headlights and obscuring your sight of the pedestrian. Then the oncoming car passes by you and you're now just about on top of the crosswalk and you're startled by the sudden sight of the pedestrian you're almost hitting or coming too close to. Despite one's best efforts, this scenario seems to rely almost entirely on the pedestrian having the common sense enough to wait until they can see that no vehicles are bearing down on the crosswalk. Aside from slowing down somewhat and TRYING your best to scan the part of the crosswalk that was just previously blocked by the oncoming car and its bright headlights, through vision that hasn't recovered from the headlights, I'm not sure what else can really be done but hope you don't hit someone crossing. Also, another BIG TIP! Keep your windshield VERY clean! Any dirt, oily film or crud on your glass will scatter the light from other vehicles and street lighting and make seeing even more challenging.
