UPDATE: I just wanted to add that I won't be replying to messages anymore, I've been getting LOADS of messages ever since I wrote this comment, and replying to all of them is exhausting. I also hope I did not offend anyone, as that wasn't my intent, I simply stated my view. Anyway I'll keep this comment up in case someone finds it useful :) All right so you missed some points and weren't a bit clear in some respects. I've studied sunni islam for 12 years, and I am actually shia. So I know both "sides". Keep in mind that this is just what I know. The prophet (pbuh) knew his time was coming, and in fact, he announced that it would be his last pilgrimage. However, during this time, he announced his successor, which Sunnis believe was Abu Baker and Shias believe was Ali. The "split" in fact starts from here. After the prophet's (pbuh) death, his followers had to decide on their leader. Sunni's wanted Abubaker because he was older and "wiser" than Ali who was much younger. He was also considered his (pbuh) "best friend". Shias wanted Ali because they believed in his strength, intelligence, and loyalty. Keep in mind that the prophet (pbuh) was actually raised by Ali's father, as he was an orphan. The prophet (pbuh) and Ali were practically brothers who grew up with each other. Furthermore, Ali was also his son-in-law. But also Aisha, who was Abubaker's daughter, was one of the wives of the prophet (pbuh). Shias primarily dislike Abubaker and the other caliphs because they believe despite of what the prophet (pbuh) said, they did not reject the people's wishes and that they were overcome by a sense of power etc. As you can see, both could be considered "right" and its a bit hard to know which the prophet (pbuh) actually chose. There are pieces of "evidence" on both. Shias do consider the 12 imams to be rightfully guided by God. And that their word is right. HOWEVER, that is not to say that this applies to other "imams". What I mean by this is that an imam is someone who guides you in the righteous path. Sort of like priests in a church. In fact, every mosque has at least 1 imam that leads the prayers. Some of these imams are scholars too, and have books explaining their beliefs and providing evidence as to the interpretation of the Quran. These imams are not considered holy or whatever. They're just normal people who have dedicated their lives to finding the right answer. The reason why the 12 imams are considered so great among Shias, is because they are all descendants from the prophet (pbuh). But there were special not because of just this. In fact, the descendants of the prophet (pbuh) had many children, but only 12 of them are considered so great. The rest too of course, but I wouldn't go as far as to say they were the same. This importance is given because the prophet's family was always considered very important and pure in islam. Sunnis are much more conservative than Shias. In fact the word "sunni" comes from "sunnah" which basically means tradition. Shias on the other hand, have a more "modernized" view of islam. They believe that some texts are applied mostly in that era and would be impractical or very difficult to apply them in the 21st century. That is not to say they don't believe in them, but rather they interpret them in a different way. Though this is just for a few texts. For example, a lot of religious Sunnis don't look at women when they are speaking to them, even if they are wearing a veil and hijab. But this is not the case for Shias (at least not any I've seen). Because looking at someone while speaking is sort of a respect. Or Shias believe that the 5 prayers can be prayed in such a way that you'd end up with 3 prayers. So it would be once in the morning, twice in noon(after each other or by a small pause), and twice in the evening (after each other or by a small pause). So they too pray 5 times a day, just more closer to each other because its a bit impractical to go to the mosque or close your shop 5 times a day. (Though praying 5 times separately is also completely valid and some also consider it to be more correct or better). Little things like this. Shias DO NOT think that leadership is a birth right. In fact, this is also the reason why not every descendant is part of the 12 imams. Its their actions that determine their worth to be the religious leader. This is why also some Shia countries select their leaders and president and are not chosen by a single family or descendants. Whereas, in Saudi Arabia, the leading family gets to decide the next ruler and so on. The same is applied in other nearby arabic countries. Though most of the time, the family chooses the most fit among themselves. I would still prefer if everyone had a part of this choice. Shias feel like victims usually because of the same point you said, they're considered heretics among some Sunnis. I personally faced some backlash from my classmates especially when I was in junior high. Shias are made fun of because of select people who hurt themselves in the Muharam month. Which has been completely banned by Islam and Shias. In fact, muslims are not allowed to harm themselves. So even pricking yourself with a needle (not for medical purposes) to drinking alcohol etc is forbidden. This month is quite difficult for Shias as a lot of the 12 imams and their siblings were killed by what the Shias believe were Sunnis or people sent by Sunnis. Some Sunnis celebrate actually these days actually (although I think they are not a good representation of Sunnis either). A lot of bombings happen in countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan and they're always blamed on Sunnis from Shias and vice versa. The Sunni arabic media always denounces Shias, sort of the same as the Nazi propaganda on Jews. And of course vice versa. Shias believe in taqqiyah because what you say is not necessarily your faith. I could say I believe in Islam but deep down I don't then that is not considered faith. In fact, during the prophet's (pbuh) time there were many people who "converted" to islam but their goal was to spread "fatwa" or lies among the community. They're referred to as "monafegheen". So this is further proof as to why Shias believe in taqqiyah. Another reason is that (if I'm not mistaken) both Sunnis and Shias believe that under very unfavorable conditions, you can, for example, eat pork or drink alcohol. If you're starving etc. All in all, Shias and Sunnis are very very similar. Probably more similar than different and should not harm each other or be rude. That is exactly what both believe in, and anyone who hurts another, if by word or by action, is breaking a very important rule in Islam. (Even people who don't believe are not allowed to be killed) SORRY I DIDN'T EXPECT IT TO BE THIS LONG.

Md. Lutful Kabir a lot of Sunni scholars cause a misconception about Shias, we believe that the last imam (Imam Mahdi) will return before judgement day. But Sunnis believe that he will be born before judgement day (so as u can see its the same). Another big misconception is that a lot of Sunnis think imams are equal to prophets in Shia, but that is not the case. Imam is an arabic word that means guide or leader. Thats why you always find that shia scholars say Imam Ali, never prophet.

As a sunni-ibadi muslim, I can agree. I've had iraqi shia friends as a kid and our and their parents never even bothered anything between eachother just because they are different in terms of sects. This is one of the big weaknesses of us where we divide ourself over some theological and ideoloigies, while we should focus on being and follow the sunnah and thinking of ourself and every muslim as united together by our brother/sisterhood

It could be said the deniers of truth and rejectors of God are unto themselves their own brotherhood. Great video, however a few clarifications...: 1-Shiahs don't believe "[the prophet] didn't leave a successor to lead the Muslim community". 2-The "leader" title was passed to Abu Bakr, but then to Omar, Usman, & then to Ali (So it didn't directly go from Abu Bakr to Ali)! 3- What is shown in the video @ 3:12, is a person leading the prayer, and usually referred to as "Imam" by both Shiahs & Sunnies. "Imam" is a title given out of respect to a person who is leading the prayer, for instance,. However, that type of "Imam" is not the one who Shiahs regard as being "pure by nature [or someone whom they venerate] as saints..." . Only Ali and the 11 successors after him are regarded as Imams (of such high caliber) in Shiahs' doctrine. Just wanted to put that one out, since the word "Imam" is used quite often and can be confusing.

A few of my own opinions: -Prophet Mohammad left a successor at the even of Ghadir Khumm, an event which is accepted by all Muslim scholars. -Valuing martyrdom is a general sentiment among muslims, but Shias glorify it more because what the prophet's grandson Hussain did at Karbala is why humanity is able to practice the fundamentals of Islam today. -I personally know very little, but if you study the lives of the Imams, you'll find that they are not 'privileged', but that their knowledge, patience, and forbearance are all merits that the Ummah should want in an Imam. The fact that they are from the line of Fatima is a bonus. -The leadership was supposedly 'earned' by the first caliph, the 'best friend' of the Prophet, before he was even buried. From a common sense point of view, does it even make sense to hold an election before your Prophet has even been buried? -We don't reject Sunni books, but we encourage that people realize that they are, at the end of the day, products of specific historical circumstances (and just like the media today, cannot be presumed free of fabrications).

Those narrations that say Muhammed married Aïsha when she was 6 are called Ahād, wich is the least authentic hadiths among the authentic ones. And Islamic science says that when something comes to contradict this type of hadith it is rejected, it's the case here. Many hadiths and historical events disprove it. Hisham ibn urwe was the only one to narrate the hadith and he narrated it when he was in Iraq, a time when he was accused of lying or having a bad memory. No one of the 4000+ companions talked about this event, only Aisha did (by the narrations of Hisham wich is already in a suspicious position) wich makes it's authenticity way more.. doubtful. Aisha’s sister Asma is stated to have been ten years older than Aisha and is listed as being 28 years old in the first year of the Bi'tha. This makes Aisha 18 years old at the time and then 19 at time of marriage. Aisha participated in the Battle of Uhud. Ibn Umar narrates that the Prophet did not permit him to participate in Uhud because he was fourteen, but when he was fifteen the Prophet gave him permission to fight in the battle of the Khandaq. Thus, Aisha must have been at least sixteen at the time of Uhud, meaning she consummated the marriage at fourteen or fifteen years old minimum. Aisha is said to have died at the age of 66 years old at 58 AH, this means at the time of Bi'tha (an Islamic event where the prophet was called by god by angel gabriel) she was eight years old. If she was only engaged after the call (even by a year) she must have been nine and as her marriage was three years later she would have been a minimum of 12, not 6. Abu Bakr the father of Aisha and Asma has once rejected the marriage of Asma because she was too young (I don't remember the age but surely 12 max) and has postponed the marriage till the age of 27, wich makes it unlogical to rush to the marriage of Aisha at the age of 6. The quran did not mention such a married and is clear that the marriage should be with a woman, and a woman is an adult female. And lastly the prophet said "No virgin is to be wed without obtaining her consent". All of this comes to the conclusion that she was between the qge of 18 and 20. I tried to make it clear and short.
