My friend Jay Palfrey and I talked about 10 differences between Turkey and the United Kingdom. If you look at those differences, it is quite interesting how different the culture, the food, the mentality, the weather and the languages in the UK and Turkey are.
I don't want to give away too much.. Just watch the video :)
The video we posted on Jay's channel: • Video
My name is Reşat Ören and on my channel I post videos about various languages, mainly English, German, Spanish and Turkish.
If you're a polyglot or are just interested in one of those languages and want to learn and acquire them, make sure to stay here and subscribe!
I also post videos about myself and my life. It actually depends on my mood.
No matter what I post though, there's definitely something for everybody out there.
I hope you guys enjoy!

Honestly, I loved hearing alot about Turkey and I love to go there. Family ties and all, I wasn't excepting such a scathing view of England though (definitely not the whole UK). It did kind of hurt, as someone who has travelled up and down the UK extensively, it seriously felt like Jay's view was entirely localised on his opinions of a newspaper or two and just a borough and a town on the coast. The culture, linguistic and culinery diversity across the country is usually underplayed but I've almost never heard one so brutish about it. It is really sad to hear any country described in this way. I say England as opposed to the UK here because it really doesn't apply but even as far as fenlands, the midlands and Cornwall there is such a stark difference it really is just a shame it was all swept off. I'll leave an example. From any of the houses I've lived in I could walk a few hours (or drive 30 minutes) and pass atleast two churches over 500 years old, a handful of pubs, through 3 or 4 different regional accents, probably see people from at least 6 or 7 different cultures (the who varies across the country) as well as see statues and plaques of a dozen or two kings, poets, war heroes, authors, artists, human rights activists and more. You will never be more than 1h away from a beach, royal/national park or protected area of natural beauty by car. Let's say Jay's dislike of where he's been in the UK by no means is a good enough view of it. I will say though, on the topic of Turkey. I agree, I absolutely love İzmir and İstanbul and I can't wait for my next visit. Best wishes and hope for the economy and health! I love your vids Reşat! Keep it up.

CM, completely agree with your summary. Having lived on the outskirts of Manchester, the wilds of mid-Wales and the multi-cultural cities of Birmingham and Leicester (and many places in between) I think there is a huge diversity in the UK. The culture speaks for itself; Viking, Norman and Saxon invasions! Shakespeare, Wordsworth, the Bronte sisters and Robbie Burns. The Industrial revolution. A couple of the oldest Universities in the World. I think Jay's view is based on his experience of living in Cornwall, which whilst part of the beautiful countryside of the UK has not played a huge part in the evolution and expansion of the Country.

No, as a Turkish I can say, British people are very lovely and friendly!!! In 2000, i stayed in London for english classes and one night the metro stopped working because of winter storm, so all the people left the metro and I couldn't figure out where I was and I was lost. A very nice gentlemen with suit helped me a lot to find my way (no internet, no smart phone, no english, was pretty scary for me).

It's extremely true about rain hahaha It rained all the time when I was in UK :d So depressing! That's also surprising to hear him saying that British people are not so friendly. I am also Belgian, and when I went to UK, I was impressed that they were more open-minded than Belgian people. People were also friendly hahah But I admit that Turkish people are so nice! I feel safe and at home everytime I go to Turkey BTW Wales is wonderful! You have great mountains and natural places to visit and climb. You have amazing landscapes in Trabzon and Rize:)) I miss there :'(

Great video but I feel like this video is too pro Turkey when Jay speaks😂 I appreciate Reşat’s objective evaluations though🤍…...a few points; I don’t agree with the unfriendliness in the UK, maybe it’s my experience being a young woman here but I’ve been living in London for 8 years and every English person I met have been so polite and helpful. I’ve never encountered a rude behavior. I always see rude people in Turkey, in traffic, in public places etc… maybe people are nice to him because he is a foreigner? Also, Turkey is at the moment struggling with cold snow and - minus degrees , but it never snows in the UK and its sunny and warm here at the moment. I really believe Jay being British, his taste and preferences are different. There are attractive people in Turkey yes but compared to average british , percentage wise , a lot less there… natural beauties and food in Turkey is always better yes-and healthcare… guys, healthcare!!! Health system sucks in the 🇬🇧, therefore “ beni Türk hekimlerine emanet ediniz!”.. overall I’d say both countries has its pros and cons💓

Because of Uzungöl videos, I travelled to Trabzon for Uzungöl (in June 2022). From that experience, I think Trabzon people are more religious that people in other cities in Turkiye that I have visited (Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, Goreme). The Friday prayer in the mosque in Trabzon is so full, so that many people have to pray outside. When entering premises, people say "Assalamualaikum" rather than "Merhaba". And I think the percentage of women wearing hijab are higher in Trabzon.

Let me say another difference between TR and UK. Brits (we can also count the Irish too) are very confident about making fun of themselves/their habits/their foods or the weather, which makes them kind of cool. This is something we don't see in Turkey very often.

Very weird video and you were right to say it was more like an ad for Turkey than anything else. Bizarre to say that everyone in the UK is unfriendly, ‘not happy with their lives’ and ‘closed off’, just blatantly not true generalisations especially when he admits to have not travelled much around the UK.

I like Jays channel, but as someone from north England, I think he was wrong about a lot of things. In Manchester for example, you can easily talk to people in cafes. For the weather, it doesnt rain that much, I think British people just moan like it does. Consumerism is a personal choice I think, and different age groups act differently. I think Jay has a bad view, but I would say take his points with a grain of salt, they seem a bit exaggerated.

Quite sad to hear such negative opinions on the UK in this video.. whilst I agree with alot of the points I think with Jay being from the south of England it's not an accurate depiction on all of the UK.. London is like nowhere else in the UK and even people in the UK laugh about how antisocial and rude London is.. Whilst Jay is well travelled around the middle east I think the fact he said he has never even been to Wales means that he can't speak for the UK as a whole.. As a country we definitely need to be more open minded like other countries and the UK is embarrassing to be from at this moment in time but for anyone reading this who has never travelled to the UK please don't take this person's opinions as the truth 🤦‍♀️ If you do visit then try not to spend time only in London as it does not represent the UK.. I myself am from Liverpool and the city is very welcoming to locals and tourists.. the North and South of the UK has beautiful coastline, towns, villages & cities to visit. People in most areas are friendly and will talk with eachother. We don't have alot of religious culture in daily life but we have some amazing architecture and social culture. Yes the weather is awful and people don't like the rain 😂 I love Turkey.. I have been going for 15 years myself and have been learning Turkish for 2 years to try and break the British stereotype of being lazy with language. I was looking forward to hearing differences that were interesting but I am actually quite offended 😂

It is possible this young man Jay did not have a happy life in his native land and this has acutely affected his outlook. Just speculating, but he could have experienced family breakdown or abandonment as a child or witnessed/experienced/been a victim of alcohol abuse which is rife and a social problem as he alluded. If so I give him a pass for that. He was describing the UK he experienced. Humans tend to see more positively the places where they experience joy and for him it's clearly Türkiye

Great video but can't disagree more on the media. I think the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) is the best independent, unbiased news you can find in the world. I'm comparing this to other anglo media news sources such as American and Australian news. Apart from that, agree with everything else you said, especially food. Turkey is one of the best gastronomy countries in the world.

As someone who has spent their whole life in England this is very interesting. I have a story about the "scammers and thief's in Turkey " I have visited Turkey once and got robbed of £80 pounds- yeh- Also personally I pronounce Christian like Jay does.

@Zultana Yeh, no matter where you are there will be bad people. I don't live in a tourist area but there are a lot of cases i have heard (especially with dodgy men when my friends try to walk home.) and there are a lot of cases of people being robbed.

@Mugair Kaya oof. Being a refugee personally i think shouldn't be generalized as someone thieving. I'm 100% sure all "99% of people in Turkey who are refugees" Aren't criminals but i can see why you are saying that.

I love Turkey and the Turkish people are very kind and friendly. Jay is extremely ignorant of the UK, of its culture (including multi-culturalism), heritage and natural environment. However, he is right about the right wing media

As a Turk, you're right, brother, it depends on the conditions that Turks live in! Turks may be neqativ because of the economic hardships, but they don't belong to every human being, some of them are. If I know the English, there's always people like that.

Umm.. hello? About 40 percent of Turkish women have suffered domestic violence at some stage in their lives, topping rates in Europe and the US. The 2021 Global Gender Gap Report ranked Turkey 133rd out of 156 countries. A 2020 study investigated the relationship between femicides and economic development in Turkey. Kerem Bürsin stated this on his IG a while back and I just googled the stats now . I’m British, Scottish be exact with African and Irish parents. I think one of my great grandparents was Turkish but that’s just a random fact. I liked learning about Turkish language and culture after watching sen çal kapimi, but I would never want to live there. I think a lot of non Turkish people watch tv series and have an idea about the culture without living there or actually experiencing it. I’ve been before but it was for vacation. And I’m sure there’s some incredible people. But the government really is a mess. But mate, you have a really biased view of the UK and don’t speak or stand for the nation. I disagree with so much of what you said and I want people to know that the UK is not perfect, or has great weather, but far exceeds turkey in terms of security, safety and fairness. Shalom. P.S. justice for jamal khashoggi
